First at-bat, first pitch... home run. Typical Carlos Quentin.
In Today's game versus the Astros, Quentin came off the bench at hit his fourth home run of the season. Quentin also got his eigth and ninth RBI's.
In limited action, thanks to Bob Melvin's veteran first approach (to be explained later) Carlos Quentin has yet to start on a consistent basis.
In Quentin's first week of his soon to be great Major League Career Quentin has 6 hits in his first 16 at bats. Four home runs and two doubles. He also has a 2:1 strike out to walk ratio (which should improve in consistent playing time). Currently he has 4 K's and 2 walks.
Bob Melvin, the Diamondbacks manager, has shown that he is a veterans manager. He played Conor Jackson in limited time last year with Tony Clark. Stephen Drew has gotten playing time at short only because he is their only option. Counsell is on the disabled list and was the only natural shortstop on the team.
But Melvin also is in a tough situation. He has one outfielder deserving of time in Eric Byrnes and then has Shawn Green. Green's power numbers have declined drastically but his average continues to hover near the .300 mark.
Then there is Mr. Franchise. Luis Gonzalez has been the face of the Diamondbacks lineup since 1999 when he was traded to the Diamondbacks and emerged as a one of the games top 15 outfielder in the National League. Last year Gonzalez struggled through surgery and injuries. This year he has been below average with a .286 batting average, 10 home runs and 48 RBI's.
Mr. Franchise literally cried to the media when Melvin sat him against a left hander (Gonzo struggles vs. LHP's) and choose to start Quentin instead.
So what does Melvin do? He will continue to play Quentin part time unless either Green or Gonzo are traded.
How will this affect Quentin? Well, I'm not quite sure. I think it harmed Conor Jackson's progress as he had to learn from the bench rather on the field. Quentin though is taking each at-bat with care and it may work out for him.
But either way, I want more Quentin. This kid needs to be in the lineup every day.
So how do you sit a potential 40 home run hitter? Especially in favor of aging veterans in Gonzo/Green.
