Anthony pondering $65 million extension

By Marc J. Spears, Yahoo! Sports Staff 9 hours, 11 minutes ago

Carmelo Anthony(notes) has received a three-year contract extension offer worth about $65 million from the Denver Nuggets.

Anthony told Yahoo! Sports he is reviewing the Nuggets’ proposal with his agents and wants to make sure the franchise is committed to improving before agreeing to sign the deal.

“I feel good about it,” Anthony said. “I appreciate them putting it on the table and wanting me to extend my career there. At the end of the day it’s about winning. If I feel I can win there, I will stay.
“I’ve been there five years. I’m comfortable there. Family is there. If I’m able to compete for a championship, I’m there.”

Anthony could wait to become an unrestricted free agent next summer, but the NBA is facing a possible lockout when the collective bargaining agreement expires at the end of the season. Commissioner David Stern and team owners are pushing to lower maximum salaries and the maximum length of contracts in a new CBA.

“That’s taking a risk, a chance,” Anthony said.

This is not directly comparable, but IMHO the Suns would jump at this kind of deal with Amare.

The biggest thingis Melo gets under the current CBA and could renew this contract with the current CBA rules with will incluced a much bigger raise year over year. Amare might not be able to get a bigger contract after this one.

Suns didn't even want to pay the 60mil over 3 years Amare was asking for.

Please post a legit source for this tidbit. Everything I have read/heard is they don't want to give him the 6 years max, they want a shorter contract. I've read/heard they are fine with the dollars, just not for 6 years.

It's hard to know since we get so much misinformation. Rumors are treated as facts and it exaggeraions treated as reasonalbe.

We know Amare wants a Max/Max deal. We know Sarver doesn't want to pay that. But the amount per year is not the same as the amount of the entire contract. We can assume Amare wants the entire Max/Max, but we don't know if anyone is prepared to pay a reall Max/Max considering his injury history. We have lots of people insisting that someone will, but that is still speculation.

Amare came back to town and met with Sarver. It is not clear what Sarver offered, but it was not designed to pre-empt the market. IMHO, Sarver is counting on the market not wanting to pay the full five years. For those who want Amare back, this is a chancy deal. For those who want the cap space and TE, this is upsetting because Amare MAY get re-signed.

Maybe things have changed but Amare was looking for the same extension Pau got during the season. Seeing how Amare wanted to sign an extension and the longest it could be under the CBA is 3 years I'm not sure how length would have been an issue.

Feel free to not believe me since I have no intention in looking up old articles.

I honestly don't recall ever reading/seeing anything that would have suggested Amare would have been happy with a 3 year extension - but perhaps I just missed it...
I do know that once the deadline passed, Amare almost exclusively used Years as a chip... He clearly wanted/wants Max years!
