The University of Arizona added head coaching experience and somebody familiar with the Houston recruiting scene with the hiring today of Dana Dimel as tight ends coach.
Dimel, who has been the head coach at Wyoming and Houston, replaces Josh Heupel, who left to become quarterbacks coach at Oklahoma last month.
"He has been very involved in offenses throughout the years and will be a good addition," Arizona coach Mike Stoops said.
"He will coach tight ends, but he has spent many years coaching the offensive lines and will have a really good perspective in that area. We are not going to change the package that we have now; he can just add a few things to help make us better."
Although his three-year record as the head coach at Houston was only 8-26, Dimel knows the area and the coaches around Texas, which is a primary recruiting area for the Wildcats.
Dimel became the youngest coach in Division I-A football when he took over the Wyoming program in 1997. The Cowboys were 23-12 during his three-year tenure.
Stoops and Dimel first became acquainted while at Kansas State. Dimel lettered for the Wildcats in 1985 and 1986 before spending 10 years on the K-State staff.
Dimel coached the offensive line most of that time before taking over offensive coordinator duties in 1995 and 1996.
After leaving Houston, and taking two years off from the coaching ranks, Dimel rejoined the Kansas State staff a year ago as a graduate assistant.
