Central Kitsap softball player Alex Berg and Bainbridge boys soccer player Cruz Piland are the Kitsap Sun athletes of the week for March 17-22, selected by readers in an online poll. Athletes are nominated by their respective coaches.
Berg helped the Cougars win a pair of games by batting 5 of 7 with a walk, triple, two RBI, four runs and four stolen bases. She collected 416 votes. Other nominees in girls sports were Olympic's Bella Crowell (396), Kingston's Harlow Heidel (118) and North Kitsap's Reese Anderson (85).
Piland led the Spartans to three victories with five goals and two assists. He led all boys sports nominees with 257 votes. Other boys nominees were South Kitsap's Isaac Benjamin (198), Bainbridge's Will Rohrbacher (194), North Kitsap's Matix Thorne (124), Klahowya's Carson Moore (116), North Kitsap's Sebastian Moran (100), North Mason's Boston Stanley (90) and Derek Dunham (90), Kingston's Luke Whalen (80) and Jack Butler (66), and South Kitsap's Tanner Rockafield (50).
The athlete of the week poll will appear online each Wednesday and votes will be tallied through Friday at noon. The top vote-getter in girls sports and boys sports will both be declared athletes of the week.
