Yes and those teams that turned it around quickly, how many were good for more than one year? We are building long term, not instant gratification.

Long-term doesn't exist without extreme proactivity. It is IMPOSSIBLE, within the structures of the salary cap, to build a dynasty (what you are describing) without constantly being proactive. We haven't shown that we can do that. We have only proven that we can move slowly and plod inch by inch towards success. Well, what happens if we don't win the Super Bowl in the next 1-2 years? Slow and steady won't help us then. We'll have to BOTH pony up money for our own players at a high rate AND bring in fresh new talent at a proactive rate. I don't think management can do that, so we'd damn well better be aiming for instant gratification.

By the way, do ya think Giant's fans will be upset they won the Super Bowl if they suck this year? After all, that would be instant gratification without long-term success.

I've both read and heard from people in the NFL who say that in the present climate the most certain way to build a winner is through the draft.

And the Giants are a good example: They added precisely ONE free agent going into last season, and about a third of their team are on their first contract.

In the next few years they get first opportunity to renew with their key players and continue to add more potential long term investments through the draft. No doubt, based on specific need - they'll tap into the Free Agent market from time to time.

The Giants did not go for "instant gratification" and they are the champs, with every reason to believe that based on their approach they'll continue to be competitive.

A lesson, I'd venture - not lost on FO's throughout the league.

Graves is not perfect, but he has got this team going in the right direction. If he and M. Bidwill can get us to the playoffs and beyond, he will have my undying gratitude. I think his plan is working and I think he will stick to that plan come hell or high water.

I'm under your tent....you can save yourself a whole lot of angst by dropping the Graves subject. We have a number of comrades who feel they have to get the last word and either call you, Graves or whomever a disparaging name. Graves is on the right track, but as I said do yourself a favor and go somewhere else...it gets tired and boring.

I agree with you on this. I just think the front office needs to do a better job with cap management. We are more than likely going to end up with 20 million per year on 2 receivers and a paper thin defense. This is not a good recipe for building a championship team in my opinion. Yes, most of our starters are returning from last year but we have zero depth. We are going to have injuries again next year and I don't want to see the second half of the season end up like this last one.

Then you're a proponent of plugging every hole with rookies? That's exactly what the Giants did. The stars aligned for it to work. Do you really think that throwing four or five rookies into the fire as guys that absolutely must contribute in order for you to succeed is a good idea? That's what the Giants did. Yeah, it ended up working for them. Once. Name me another team that that's worked for. Not developed draft picks over several years; ROOKIES.

Evidently, you're caught in a time warp. This is not the Cards of not so many years back, that was plugging holes willy-nilly. We have 21 projected starters from last season on the roster; we've added Laboy and Tuman, have a few key backups and will be adding more experienced backups in the days, weeks to come. And, yes - we have the draft and the hope that a few will be good contributors in year one; perhaps a RB or DB or LB.

I'm not as impressed by what was available on the open market this off-season, as you. It's clearly a seller's market when a 32 year old guard is paid a Kings's ransom. I prefer mid-range depth from FA, and depending on the draft to give the franchise player stability over the longer term.

You should note, that Green Bay was not particularly active either in FA last season, depending on their draft... and would seem to be a team set to be competitive for a number of years.

(Your last sentence is incomprehensible.)

I actually mostly agree about this year's FA pool, and I'm not very upset with what we've done. I simply had to jump in here because a poster continually lauds us getting to 8-8 as a major-league accomplishment, which shows just how sad our expectation level has been. Sure, I wish we'd sign a few vets like Law and Haggans, because it would provide leadership and a defense against having to draft for need. I'm not raving mad about not doing it, unlike years past.

And my last sentence makes total sense. I was making sure you knew I was talking about rookies, and not draftees that had already been developed several seasons.

Does that mean they have their poop in a pile?

No, it means you just can't stand letting your poop lay there in a pile, you keep moving it around onto other peoples property so they have something to bitch about.:D

Understood. And who knows... Haggans maybe in the cards.

P.S. What's the difference between "making sense" and "making total sense"? . ;)

It is when you've only had one other season better than that in the past gazillion years. This team is going in the right direction and that started happening about 4 years ago. I credit M. Bidwill and R. Graves for that and I plan on giving them my full support.

I could care less about other NFL teams that have done it faster. Nobody is the Cardinals and no other NFL team has had the trials and tribulations this team has had. Until they got the new stadium, they were always someone's red headed step child.

They are now acting like a professional NFL team and it is starting to pay off. They aren't building for one year. They are looking for consistancy and a program that will ensure a winning team. Mark my words - everyone will one day remember 2007 as the year the Cards turned the corner and entered the elite of the NFL. The Whis shall lead us to the promised land. It is God's will------uhhhh, scratch those last 2 sentences. I gotta quit watching the Ten Commandants.
Deja vu all over again. Where's 40 when you need him?
