I'm guessing his value is what his draft position was: #46. Not great value no matter how good you think Melton could become. He's got to have some sort of number attributed to him in a trade--with no contract, we'd pretty much be trading our "rights' to him.

Exactly. It's ridiculous to think that the #46 pick from two months ago has suddenly become a hot commodity on the basis of a few summer league games.

Well Canaan is not going to make this team now. Did the Suns get Ariza's input about Anderson?

Maybe but the reason he fell so far was that he didn’t play for a year. The consensus from what I’ve read is that he would have been a first rounder if he had played. He may be a bust but not your average second rounder.

Hes been a hot commodity among draft "experts". Takebl that as you will, but hes another good fit for what the Suns wanna do.

Also, he isn't signed because he was a 2nd round pick, and there is no rush, as the Rockets were busy using their cap space to fill their roster. Suns can sign him to however they value him.

There's a Ringer article about the deal. It seems the national sports media is liking the trade for us. I still question the need to get it done now but after sitting on it a while it's not as bad as I initially thought.

https://www.theringer.com/nba/2018/8/31/17803978/rockets-suns-ryan-anderson-brandon-knight

I especially liked this comment from the linked article above:

"As for the Suns, they are now in possession of the best haul from the 2018 draft (just a reminder, they now have Ayton, Bridges, Okobo, and Melton on their roster). Phoenix has plenty of assets to try to swing a trade for a starting point guard, as Woj suggested it would. Kemba Walker seems like an obvious target, but the Suns might be reluctant to give up too much for a player who will be a free agent at the end of the upcoming season. A home run for Phoenix would involve acquiring C.J. McCollum, who would instantly create one of the most dynamic offensive backcourts in the league with Booker by his side. The Blazers may be clinging onto the facade of last season’s 3-seed, but would they be able to ignore the goodie bag the Suns are capable of putting together?"

What makes you say that? I think this increases Canaan's odds of making the team. Not only is he the most experienced PG on the roster now but he also started last season with Houston, which seems to be a pre-requisite to be a Suns player now. McD has moved on from his Kentucky obsession and started stockpiling former Rockets.

The youth movement is coming to an end its time to add some vets.

I know nothing about the guys we traded for but if they are good locker room guys its a win.

Knight and Chris just were not working out, now we don't have to worry about it.

I do not expect Ryan Anderson to be starting. That just does not make sense.

It's true but the Suns have added rookies Ayton, Bridges, Okobo, King and Melton (if he signs) from the 2018 draft alone.

I agree. While Canaan doesn't excel at any one thing, he is competent at everything. He is a pretty good defender, decent facilitator, and a good shooter. Honestly, I think he is the best guard on the roster right now outside of Booker. That says more about the Suns roster than about him, but I think it's true.

I don't think "youth movement" is supposed to mean, "draft a bunch of prospects, get impatient waiting for them to develop, and dump them for declining vets who are seriously overpaid."

Just in general we had too many guys on the roster, so we do need to make a move. So far kinda moving the deck chairs around, to our view. IF, big IF a GM is really good, you kind of battle plan out several moves in advance.

I know Melton is expected to sign but if he doesn't for some reason that makes this trade that much worse. I feel safe assuming he's the main reason the Suns made that deal. Anderson may work out and he may not, he's likely gone after this season anyway. If he's not flipped in another deal then I think it's safe to say he's a part of the future, albeit not an untouchable piece. I'm not sure of the restrictions or if there are any for trading a rookie who hasn't signed yet. I know we can't trade Anderson in a package for 60 days because of the CBA and if Melton hasn't signed then that could change how he could be dealt again. I'll have to look into that.

So since the Suns took on a higher salary in Anderson, and I believe when you trade player for player there is a percentage that needs to be within in salary between the players. So having Anderson, you could trade for a guy with a higher salary since Anderson's is closer to a premier PG's salary per year. Plus then we throw in draft picks. So could having a higher salary guy actually help facilitate a trade?

Only if there's anyone out there who would value Anderson over Knight plus Chriss, which there isn't. Anything that a team would trade for Anderson, they would have more readily traded for Knight plus Chriss.

I'm not sure Melton is the primary reason for the Suns making the trade though. IMO, it's more about moving Knight for something more useful.

As far as signing Melton, I'd like to keep him unless the Suns trade his rights him for another PG. This was a PG rich draft in 2018. It's hard to say who develops. Melton probably has as good a chance as most 2nd round picks of succeeding.

In recent years the Suns have been signing their second round draft picks to multi-year contracts. If Melton does not like his situation with the Suns his rights might be traded again.

I found this about retaining rights of second round picks.

In order to retain the draft rights of a second-round prospect, teams must offer second-round picks a tender of the minimum salary, with all that money non-guaranteed. Most players decline the offer, knowing that it's not really all that valuable due to the likely lack of cash involved. Accept that offer, and you're stuck with the team for training camp, and out of the running for a larger guaranteed sum elsewhere.

Recently, however, players have started using the tender to their advantage. If you're selected, and if you believe you are a NBA player, you can accept the tender, go to camp with the team that picked you, and try to make your way onto the roster. If you succeed, you get your money. If you don't, you are free to sign with any other team, thereby giving you more future freedom to essentially pick your spot. And that's the call McDaniels made, accepting the tender instead of the $1 million-plus the Sixers were offering guaranteed.

Even if they were really trading for draft pick(s) we throw in and/or another player? He could be a filler salary wise to get the trade done?

Just trying to figure out why this trade was so attractive to Suns, unless Melton was valued highly by them. If no one else wanted Anderson, why do we? Just trying to justify his end of the trade.

I am starting to think it wasn't about Anderson and Melton. It was about getting rid of Knight and Chriss. They may have been potential locker room issues, and the Suns wanted them gone today. They may actually like Melton, and Anderson just might be more accepting of playing a reduced role than Knight and Chriss.

If they wanted to bring in a real point guard, they may have needed Knight gone. A shooting PF may be less of a waste of a roster spot than a combo guard that can't really do anything well. I also wouldn't be shocked if Bender goes bye-bye along with Warren if they pull off a trade for a real PG.

I do think Knight would have been unhappy if he didn't start. This would have been a problem as you note if the Suns wanted to bring in a starting PG. So the Suns get Anderson who gave up some guaranteed money because he actually wanted to come here. This trade solves some problems.

I still think Bender, so young in age, has shown enough talent to risk keeping him. But more to the point, you could be right. Obviously we don't know what has really happened behind closed doors. Interesting that Chriss was basically excluded from Summer League. Knight, who knows? That I can buy. It was more about subtraction.
