This is where I disagree. We have drafted for need first. Williams, Beanie, DRC, Levi, Leinart, Rolle, keep going... we have drafted to our biggest need first, while trying to draft the BPA, there's a difference. The one time in recent memory that we drafted BPA, was Fitz when we already had Boldin.

In a perfect scenario, the best player available fits your biggest need.

I would argue that ML was perceived as BPA. Take a poll of Cards fans at the time and they couldn't believe he fell to us.

Williams was BPA simply because the FO couldn't believe he was still available. The presser about the pick was very telling, Whiz was as giddy as a school girl at a Justin B concert. If Williams hadn't been there then you would be correct because they were going to reach for Washington.

Rolle and Levi were absolutely need influenced.

IMWO Fitz wasn't BPA since Rivers was still on the board. Maybe DG felt he was BPA but we all know the ties he had with Fitz.

I'm not arguing that Leinart for example wasn't the BPA at the time. He might have been. I'm arguing that they nearly always draft for need first, instead of BPA.

and there are lots of times and spots in the draft where need and BPA intersect nicely for you.

Carolina desperately needs a QB -- Andrew Luck is the highest rated player and a QB. Carolina can draft for need and BPA.

I'm not sure about nearly always but there is enough evidence to show that prior to Whiz it was almost or always drafting for need.

Whiz does say they have a "weighted" draft board so need does obviously factor in. I think Beanie, DRC and Williams could all be considered BPA that also happened to address a big need. How much of that is luck and how much is using FA to fill holes that would be tough to fill during that draft due to what players are coming out and what teams need what and when they draft is another level of this debate.

What has encouraged me is how much the Cards have moved around in the draft since Whiz has come on board. Many of us moan that the Cards aren't aggressive enough and won't make this or that happen but they have done a lot more of this; especially in this past draft.

Now if they can master the art of trading down to acquire more picks and utilize those picks correctly then I'd be ecstatic. The teams that are best at that are already very good with minimal holes to fill (Pats and Eagles).

Agreed. Even if they swing and miss, they are at least trying to grab players they think will fit.

I thought Whiz and Graves have already freely admitted that they don't follow a true BPA theory. It's a BPA with an eye towards a position of need. (which means in their mind a guard who we will try to make into a tackle)

With that being said outside of QB (which I'm resigned to the fact that we will NOT address on day one) the biggest need would seem to be to find someone to replace Porter, Haggans and or add some size in the middle.

?

and what facts support your resignation?
