Colangelo to be Raptors' new GM: sources
MICHAEL GRANGE

Globe and Mail Update

The Toronto Raptors have got their man.

Sources in Phoenix said this morning that Bryan Colangelo will be leaving the only National Basketball Association organization he's ever known to assume the role of president and general manager of the Raptors.

"There are some final details to workout with the Suns regarding his situation that's where it right now," an NBA source told The Globe and Mail just before noon. "There will be something more later, but it is not out of the realm of possibility to say he's coming to Toronto."

An official announcement is pending, but sources close to both Suns managing partner Robert Sarver and Colangelo indicate the Raptors month-long courtship of the 40-year-old reigning executive of the year is over, and has been successful.

While their have been a number of logistical issues to work out -- Colangelo needs to divest himself of a small ownership stake in the Suns and the Raptors may have to compensate Phoenix -- the final obstacle for Colangelo has been merely coming to grips with moving from his long-time home and franchise his father has been associated since in was founded in 1968.

"It's related to family," a Phoenix source told The Globe Sunday night regarding Colangelo's mind-set over the weekend in advance of the Feb. 28th deadline Sarver had given him to decide if he was going to stay with the Suns or not. "[He] has a gut feeling, it's just the final though process now."

Sources in Phoenix said that Sarver was expecting the situation to be resolved today.

Good luck to him, the only thing I'm wondering is about "compensation from Toronto". Just give us Chris Bosh and we'll call it even.

It's a dissapointment. But as I've said before, what bugs me the most is negotiating during the season. Especially right before the trade deadline. Also, the fact that David Stern encouraged it is pretty infuriating.

Brian Colangelo gave every indication of being a very good GM. Oh well. We'll see what happens from here.

If they let him do that, I'm gonna poop a brick. Having a general manager who is for sure going to leave makes absolutely no sense to me. Why would he scout players for the Suns when he is going to be competing for the same players in July?

I've got $10 that says BC makes that team respectable in two years. The EC is full of dead weight. That's if the Knicks don't wise up and hire BC away from Toronto.

This could be more bad news, too. He could make a run a D'Antoni because they have been friends for a long time. If not D'Antoni, I bet he raids the staff. Dibs on Iavaroni? That one would hurt youth development. 'Roni and Weber are legitimate talents as assistants.

I Agree. A month or two ago, Boise State went through it's football coach taking a new job but staying for the bowl game, and then taking recruits to his new job. It's not totally the same, but it made a lot of issues since he was taking another job but was still around for a while.

Yes, but I've had a whole week of rumors to ponder the implications. I believe the fallout could be very real.

I think the move to make here is to take a stabilizing person as our new general manager. Someone to calm the waters a little. From reports I've read, it sounds like Kerr will be offered the job, will turn it down, and then Rex Chapman will be considered to be brought back.

My top choice is Rex Chapman. I've heard that Chapman's beef was with BC, not Sarver. I also heard that Chapman tried everything he could to convince the Suns to trade up for Dwyane Wade, but Colangelo shot the idea down.

I also like Chapman more than Kerr because:

a) He's been working in front offices for the past few years while Kerr really hasn't(and I don't think Yahoo! articles count as GM experience).

b) Chapman has been working within the organization.

Of course the other option is David Griffin-- which is only really compelling because it keeps my dream alive that an unathletic nerdy white guy with no professional playing experience whose father doesn't own an team can eventually become a general manager in the NBA.

I wish him well in Toronto.. If the Raptors have patience with him, and give him more of a shot to run a franchise than they did Babcock, it could turn out to be a good hire for them.

Also, I have a feeling "compensation" is going to be Arrujo.. Call it a hunch.

WAY better. And by better, I mean "not Araujo".

Anyway, at this point, compensation can only be picks or money. I'm guessing they'll throw money and a future second rounder.

The Suns had better hold out for an Associate Producer credit too.

I got an email reply from Bob Young, stating the san antonio writer who killed sarver yesterday, was in denver, and close to d'antoni there. Thus, young stated it was a pretty good chance d'antoni was the actual source for that information used. If so, this is really scary...

Anyone other than me get it? Anyone? Anyone?

what does that mean, the cash and second rounder are as meaningless as an associate producer credit?

Well that settles it then...

We may as well just give up being Suns fans.

Why not wait for things to actually happen before getting upset about it?

And in 2009, Amare will ask for a trade.

Thanks a lot, Sarver!!

Bryan Colangelo's tenure with Suns is over

Bryan Colangelo's tenure with Suns is over
By Jerry Brown and Craig Morgan
Tribune
February 27, 2006

Bryan Colangelo's tenure with the Phoenix Suns is over. Sources close to the team confirmed Monday that Colangelo, the club's president and general manager, will leave the organization to assume the same role with the Toronto Raptors.

Toronto reportedly is offering a multi-year deal in the range of $3 million per season.

Sources said there are still details to be worked out, most notably Colangelo's small ownership stake in the Suns which must be sold before he leaves.

The Suns also may be seeking compensation from Toronto for losing their GM in the middle of the season, with a year left on his deal.

Suns coach Mike D'Antoni admitted being surprised by the turn of events.

“Bryan has meant everything to me. He gave me a shot. I'm here because of him," D'Antoni said. “Everybody's surprised. At the same time, hopefully, for him it's a great opportunity. I wish him all the best."

Reports first surfaced three weeks ago that the Raptors were courting Colangelo. Suns owner Robert Sarver initially refused to comment on the rumors or on the job Colangelo had done in being named the NBA's executive of the year in 2004-2005 when the retooled Suns made it to the Western Conference finals.

When Colangelo first approached Sarver about the Raptors' opportunity, sources said Sarver lost his temper and told Colangelo to get out of his office.

The two also reportedly had a contentious meeting at the All-Star game in Houston Feb. 19.

Sources have said talks with Sarver about a contract extension (Colangelo is signed through the 2006-2007 season) failed to find common ground and the relationship between the two remains strained.

In going to Toronto, Colangelo will join family friend and NBA veteran Wayne Embry, the club's interim GM. It is unclear what role Embry will now assume.

Colangelo is in the middle of his 11th season as the Suns' general manager and his seventh as Suns president. He has been with the organization for 17 seasons.

Under Colangelo’s guidance, the Suns reshaped their roster to its current level. The Suns drafted Shawn Marion and Amaré Stoudemire, disposed of the “Backcourt 2000” experiment with Jason Kidd and Penny Hardaway, and traded for Stephon Marbury. When that didn’t work, Colangelo dumped Marbury and wooed Steve Nash. The Suns went on to reach an NBA-best 62 wins last season.

Colangelo has also held positions as scout, assistant director of player personnel and assistant general manager with the team.

The team is on its way to its ninth playoff appearance in Colangelo’s tenure as GM.

Colangelo graduated from Phoenix Central High School in 1983 and Cornell University in 1987.
