It's a dissapointment. But as I've said before, what bugs me the most is negotiating during the season. Especially right before the trade deadline. Also, the fact that David Stern encouraged it is pretty infuriating.

Brian Colangelo gave every indication of being a very good GM. Oh well. We'll see what happens from here.
Exactly. Instead of looking at their options (draft picks, TE, needs) they had a pizzing match with each other. Most unfortunate. Also makes ya wonder if Stern has a bit of dislike for Sarver.

I've got $10 that says BC makes that team respectable in two years. The EC is full of dead weight. That's if the Knicks don't wise up and hire BC away from Toronto.

They'll have money to play with and some good young talent, so it's possible.

This could be more bad news, too. He could make a run a D'Antoni because they have been friends for a long time. If not D'Antoni, I bet he raids the staff. Dibs on Iavaroni? That one would hurt youth development. 'Roni and Weber are legitimate talents as assistants.

This has been rumored since the whole thing started and wouldn't surprise me one bit. With Bosh and some of the other guys they remind me of the Suns during the Mebury years - some good talent but need to figure a direction. Which is what BC will bring.

It's unprofessional of the Raptors to even try to speak with another team's GM mid-season and even more unprofessional of David Stern to recommend it. You can blame it on Sarver all you want, but I'd be pissed if one of my employees with 1 1/2 yrs left on his contract wanted explore other employement oportunities in the middle of a giant project (season). That request would put a strain on any business relationship.

Honestly if we keep D'Antoni, than Iavaroni is gone. If D'Antoni leaves, than we will most likely promote one of the assistants.

It is quite clear that Sarver loves this style of basketball. One advantage to him being a fan is he clearly enjoys the product. I would call it highly unlikely that we are going to radically change our team's identity regardless of who is GM.

EDIT: I say Iavaroni is gone because you have to think he will be a hot coaching commodity.

I believe it was in the contract when Sarver bought the team. If another team wanted to talk to BC, Sarver wouldn't prevent it. Sarver was keeping his word. But if i were Sarver i would have asked them to wait until the end of the season.

It is a bit low for the Raptors and Stern to do it at mid-season.

And who is it who has been working with Amare to develop his game??

Bryan Colangelo Leaves Suns

Posted: Feb. 27, 2006

Bryan Colangelo, Suns’ President and General Manager, has resigned his position with the team.

“Bryan has decided that his preference is to leave the Suns, and under those circumstances, we saw no other option other than to accept his decision, “ said Suns Managing Partner Robert Sarver in making the announcement.

“At the time we bought the team, we agreed to a new three-year contract with Bryan,” continued Sarver. “Dating back to last summer, I assured Bryan of my intention to extend his contract. I’m disappointed with Bryan’s decision but I wish him well.”

“I couldn’t be more excited about the future of our team,” Sarver said. “With Steve Nash, Shawn Marion, Amaré Stoudemire and Mike D’Antoni, our team continues to be headed in the direction of the goal we all share, creating sustainable success for the Phoenix Suns and winning an NBA Championship.”

“We will proceed methodically in deciding Bryan’s replacement but in the meantime we have a tremendous basketball staff in place and they will take on additional responsibilities in the interim.”

If anyone thinks that this coaching staff was going to be together longer than 3 years, you are deluding yourself.

Either we would be so good that people raid our staff and they go on to be Head Coaches, or we do so poorly that they get fired. In Colangelo's case, he was going to be gone in a year no matter what.

That is the nature of the business of the NBA. And that is what this is...business. Someone got a better opportunity and took it.

Do any of you honestly think that Amare is going to stop working on his game when one of our assistants leaves? Or he is going to stop improving? If so, you are selling the kid short.

I don't think basketball is going to work in Canada. The only reason why the raptors have lasted this long in Toronto is because of Vince Carter. Unless a charismatic star ends up there I'll be surprised if they are not trying to move by the end of the decade. The fact is that players don't want to play or live there. Bryan's got a tough job ahead of him. If Bosh leaves they might as well close up shop.

Maybe you're right. Maybe there's a cultural rift between the NBA and Canada. But basketball has always "worked" in Toronto, the birthplace of the sport.

Let the Sarver roast begin!

I swear, Sarver could bring us 8 NBA Championships in a row, and someone will get on here and post he should have the franchise taken from him because he raised popcorn prices! :grabs:

BC was gone in his mind a couple weeks ago. He knew Sarver's position and was going through the motions to make it look good. Sarver offered him security. He just wanted BC to honor his part of the contract on the front end. BC wants more. He's going to get more. Good for him. :)

It was birthed at a Mass. YMCA by Ontario native and Presbyterian minister James Naismith. The first NBA game (then called Basketball Congress United or something like that) was hosted by the Toronto Huskies in the 40s.

Sarver hasn't done anything to warrant a roasting but he certainly hasn't done anything so great to get him a muligan either, if Sarver wins 8 titles he would probably not take much heat from fans for anything but then again he could try doing PPV then he would be compared to Hitler I am sure.

Sarver wants to be a control-freak owner. Great. Let him have his organization. But also let him keep in mind to affect real change, it's rarely a matter of hiring personnel who bow to his wishes.

[FONT=helvetica, arial]When we see the need for deep change, we usually see it as something that needs to take place in someone else. In our roles of authority, such as parent, teacher, or boss, we are particularly quick to direct others to change. Such directives often fail, and we respond to the resistance by increasing our efforts. The power struggle that follows seldom results in change or brings about excellence. One of the most important insights about the need to bring about deep change in others has to do with where deep change actually starts. - Robert E. Quinn.

God, Chap, you killed this thread off! :)

What do you expect--the people here are making Sarver out to be the Stalin of NBA basketball with no evidence to back it up.

(And just so there aren't any false misgivings, I do NOT think he's the greatest owner either, but I don't see any reason for people to treat him like he's the worst thing that ever happened to this team!)

Where's the criticism of Bryan Colangelo for wanting to leave in the middle of a championship run to go to a perennial loser?

Not to mention how people on this board absolutely killed Joe Johnson for leaving Phoenix to be with a perennial loser because they guaranteed him more money. What do you think Bryan Colangelo is doing right now?

Did you include the 20 people on this board? :D
That's why I put, "in the NBA", in there. The count on this board is too numerous to tabulate! :)
