Holtmann said he heard players yelling in panic from the back of the plane and that staff members were texting their wives.
"As a coach, you are obviously thinking of your family," Holtmann said. "But you are also thinking about all the young men on the plane.
"I was shook. It was scary. We had guys crying."
Holtmann said they used the oxygen masks for about 15 minutes. He said the pilot told him "that was some of the longest minutes of my life."
Holtmann and the team wound up landing in Pittsburgh shortly after midnight and staying at a local hotel. The coach said he experienced a severe headache and that players complained of pain in their ears.
The team plans to take a charter flight to Indianapolis on Friday afternoon despite some players voicing their preference to take a bus back.

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — South Carolina guard Sindarius Thornwell was reinstated to the team Monday after missing the past six games because of an unspecified violation of athletic department policy.
The 6-foot-5 senior will be available when the Gamecocks open Southeastern Conference play at Georgia on Wednesday night.

South Florida has fired men's basketball coach Orlando Antigua, whose program has struggled and is in the midst of an academic fraud investigation.
USF athletic director Mark Harlan sent a letter about Antigua's dismissal to supporters of the program on Tuesday morning.
"After a thorough and deliberate review of our men's basketball program, a decision has been made to make a head coaching change," Harlan wrote. "I met with Coach Antigua earlier today to inform him of this and to thank him for his service to USF. We wish Coach Antigua and his family the very best."
