Comedy writers at the Republic?

Fresh on the heels of the "100 reasons for 100 losses" masterpiece of Friday, today's Sports section treats us to the following by the same Bob Young:

Someone needs to tell this guy that he just ain't funny. Even though the Phoenix pro teams all currently... ummm... suck, I still expect some degree of actual coverage, not crap like this.

I got a number of smiles out of it.

Can you think of anything he missed? I can, but mostly of the worse variety. Can you point out anything he said that was inaccurate? I can't.

Think about it - if you can't smile about the Cardinals, you'll have a rather miserable life as a sports fan. They just aren't as lovable as those 'lovable losers', the Cubs.

I now hate the republic. It seems as though all they have done of late is ripped our sports teams and tried to be funny. Very glad I get the Tribune so I dont have to bother canceling a subscription to the Republic.

Where ya been? This is nothing new (or in Rod Allen's immortal phrase, 'as of late').

The Repulsive has always undermined local teams, players, owners. They do it a bit less now than they did in Pedro Gomez' heyday, if anything - yet the teams are worse. Go figure! I thought the "100 reasons" column was both amusing and accurate - they got it right down to losing Vic Rojas! This Cardinal one seemed lame, but then, not much funny about the Bidwells.

Maybe they're having a competition in the newsroom, given what little else there is to write about these days. Next up - 101 things to do during a lock-out?

The teams in this city have become, or in some cases, have been, the laughing stocks of their respective leagues.

A town full of transient and transplanted residents means there is only one way to draw a crowd, and that is to win. Unfortunately, the owners will tell you that the market cannot support the salaries it takes to build a winner.

In football, the market is here for the Cardinals taking and has been since they moved here. That franchise deserves all the ridicule it gets. I lost patience with that franchise a long time ago.

The Diamondbacks probably do not deserve the bad press, however a myriad of injuries and bad moves has caused them to become the worst that MLB has to offer. What else is there to do than laugh about this season? It surely cannot be any fun for a reporter to have to cover that team this season. I would imagine frustrated players and coaches want nothing to do with the media after so many horrible losses.

By the way, I thought the Cardinals column was not only funny, but right on.

I would have no problem with the "humor" articles if they were in addition to actual coverage - not a substitute for it.

I know, it's no fun covering the day-to-day of a team that's gonna lose 110 games. Tough. They are still pro sports teams (on paper anyway) and should be on the front page of the sports section, not buried halfway back. I thought with Colangelo finally out of the way, that the writers might finally have the spine to write what's really going on and do some serious analysis. But it has gotten worse.

I found this funny for one reason. "As of late" all of our teams have been horrible!
