I hope that's the case but honestly, it doesn't really ring true for me. People do change their mind but it seems more likely that something occurred during the interview process to sway him. I guess it's possible that Milwaukee contacted him and assured him he was their number one choice so he no longer felt forced to cover his bases with the Suns.
He may very well have felt that he couldn't win with the current Suns roster and wasn't confident that they could make enough moves this off season to make a full turn around. If that is the case than I could certainly understand him wanting a crack at the Bucks job more because they already have a roster that can win.

Considering that he apparently failed miserably at the "control" part of his job in Atlanta, that might be a good thing. I'm assuming by control they are talking mostly about personnel decisions.
I’ve heard the same thing about his personnel skills just saying I don’t think PHX is willing to give any coach personnel control.

Maybe but it seems to me he would have known this before interviewing. He might not have known whether the Bucks had serious interest (until during or after our interview) though so it's possible Gambo is right.

I'm sure you're right which might be why JV Gundy's name hasn't surfaced for us.

In some ways screw Budenholzer then. If he feels we are too much of a project then ok....maybe we are. So maybe we shouldn't care so much for the next couple seasons. The suns need to show more to be 'worthy' of a quality coach and 'worthy' of quality free agents. Let's just watch our players improve.

If we get Ayton or some other stud we aren't going to care so much about getting the greatest coach for right now. The best coach in the world isn't going to get the suns to the finals next season...not even the playoffs. So what are we shedding tears about?

Bud would have offered stability at HC of which the Suns havent had since Mike or Gentry. Now Im afraid we're stuck with fillers again unless some dark horse names emerge? At this point Id be OK with Igor, JVG, Messina or Stotts going forward.

I really don't even care who the head coach is for right now. In a couple years I'll care....not now.

They mentioned on Doug & Wolf this morning that either he was not going to get the control he wanted or they weren’t willing to pay. If he was interested then either of those were the deal breaker or both. I think it’s the control part that was the hang up, Sarver & McD probably didn’t want to give up that kind of control to a head coach.
If it was about control, well then I get it. Bud was not a very good GM.

That's the type of thinking that got us Watson. (I can only assume, because why would he have been hired if we did care?) The Suns need someone who is great at developing talent or, at the very least, won't set us back.

Also, we need to make forward progress and start winning some games, especially if the Suns actually follow the plan to have a big offseason. The head coach matters a lot.

Yeah well good luck getting a quality head coach with a project team and a penny pinching owner. Have fun banging your head against that wall.

:bang:

I'm going to enjoy Ayton if we get him.

He has ties to the area and probably wanted a chance to be back home. That and he maybe wanted to hear what the plan was going forward before ruling us out.

I am just not going to assume it was about money until I get confirmation of that. It just doesn't make sense to me. I tend to believe what people say until proven otherwise.

I'm going to assume it is about money because Sarver hasn't spent big money on any star coach. He gets assistants and assistants to assistants.

I just don't see how it is a money thing. They knew full well that it was going to cost a pretty penny to bring in Bud and thus I don't see why they even schedule the interview if they weren't going to be willing to pay up. I would buy it being about roster control or Bud just not liking what we had to say that swayed him away from the Suns before believing it was about money.

Could be any of it....could be all of it. He didn't give him an offer he couldn't refuse.

Its gotta be about money and control. Saver likes McD, prolly because he licks his ******** at every turn but he's not giving up control to someone who doesnt want interference from a meddling owner. I think Bud is the type that would butt heads if push came to shove?

So far in our coaching search, we've had a guy who just lost 25 games pull his name out of the running and a college coach who's never even gotten his team to the tournament say "thanks, but no thanks."

Man... that is an UGLY look.

That's spin man, just spin. Bud is considered a top 10 coach who took the lowly Atlanta Hawks to a 60 win season and then blew it up as a GM.
