just a reminder:

the Cardinals, like the majority of the NFL, are preparing themselves for the likelihood of a work stoppage in 2011. They are assiduously avoiding paying out big bonuses to players that likely wont be playing in the season after this one.

The teams that have gone nutty this offseason: big market teams who make enough money in one regular season that they can easily survive a year without games.

The Cardinals never pursued an aggressive strategy on free agents to begin with -- every year guys show up and leave. Some sign, but others don't. Throw a coming work stoppage on top of that, and you get the current off season.

Nobody who follows this team closely should really be surprised.

that being said -- its not a guarantee that the team emerges better than, or even as good as, the one from last season.

where the Cardinals risk aversion really hurt them was with Dansby. They could have locked him up two years ago to a reasonable ( by today's standards) price -- but thought he would go back to being soft the minute he got a big signing bonus (which could still very well happen). So they thought they would mitigate that risk by seeing more of Karlos. In the meantime -- Calvin Pace got big money, and Dansby's expectations went to the next level.

I don't know if this was posted elsewhere but from Urban's blog about what Whiz said today:

"And as a p.s., while no one brought up Joey Porter directly, Whisenhunt was asked about finding linebackers in free agency. Whisenhunt said the Cards continue to talk to available players/agents and talked about the young linebackers the Cards have. He indirectly referred to Porter — who is visiting Washington — with this comment: “I don’t think (a veteran LB) is something we have to have.”
“Obviously if we have an opportunity to upgrade our team by bringing in a player that could make a big difference, we are going to attempt to do that,” Whisenhunt added."

yeah, I read that and took it as Wiz making a preemptive strike defending the front office when we inevitably lose out on Porter. Do i think he believes the statement made above? No... or I guess I hope he doesn't because anyone with half a brain (and I regard Wiz with one of the best football minds in the league) knows that having nothing but basically rookie LBer in a 3-4 is a recipe for disaster.

Whiz is fooling himself if he thinks the current players we have at OLB are good enough. That's wishful thinking. Joey Porter has close to 100 career sacks...Cody Brown, Will Davis, Mark Washington and Stevie Baggs have what 1 combined?

I know this will incite a slew of ad hominems at me but so what. I will say it. Whiz has not made good defensive decisions in his tenure here and it the reason why we didn't win the Super Bowl and the reason why we allowed 90 points in two consecutive playoffs games this year, the worst ever in the NFL.

I agree!

The problem goes back to the ownership and Bill Bidwill. The front office is frugal. Michael took over but I'm sure any deal has to be approved by the old man. They like Rod Graves as he fits in with their philosophy. The new stadium has given them a significant boost in a money stream but the old ways do remain.

This smells of the front office giving him (porter) a lowball offer! I, once again have been let down by this ownership this offseason. a couple of steps backwards has taken place here! I do not believe it's reasonable to have all the issues this team is facing, addressed through the draft!

Wiz knows where his bread is buttered. I believe this to be preemptive spin shielding the front office from criticism Mitch. Nothing more, nothing less.

I thought Whiz was given a little more autonomy with his re-signing. Was he or not?

The fascinating thing that has now developed with the Anderson signing is the conundrum of the Bidwills possibly having to shell out $11M to Anderson when all the while they've been hoping Leinart was their guy.

With Whiz in charge, the best player will play.

Whether named Cody Brown, Will Davis, Mark Washington, Stevie Baggs and Xxxx Xxxxx, if they total 18 sacks they'll have matched last year's output.

We need more, and doubtless, Porter could have potentially added to the total, but - for one, I'll wait to see what we pick up in FA and the draft before suggesting that Whiz is fooling himself.

We lost the Super Bowl because DRC got schooled and Franciso fell on his face. We gave up 45 points in a win to the best young QB in football, and 45 with 4 starters on the limp. But, we all know... that wouldn't have happened if Whiz hadn't promoted Bill Davis.

PS: Who believes that Porter at this point in his career is a 6M per annum Linebacker?

(It was reported that this was his opening gambit)

Since Whisenhunt has been head coach who has been our best FA signing? Its a serious question, have we made any great signings? Whisenhunt pretty much has had to stock this team through the draft as the front office never really makes an impact in free agency. Thats not always a recipe for disaster if the team develops and keeps its own players but I'm more worried than confident in our young guys being capable of stepping up and feel the situation is ripe for a "stop gap" type of player. This isn't a 5-11 team anymore, we are a playoff team, our defense was bad enough with Dansby, Rolle, Berry, Robinson & Okeafor--who is to say our young guys can even match their production?

PS: Off the top of my head the best signing I can think of is Gandy and that wasn't really a "BIG" signing.

If Porter wants more than 1 yr. guarantee, then I think he's deluding himself. We'll see.

I like getting younger and more athletic defensively however. Better ball control should help the cause as well as less injuries that depleted them at the end.

Mitch, how long have me, you & others been on this bandgwagon about our OLB? 2 years now & counting...

To think just because we need help at ILB in the draft is isane. If Hughes or Graham are there at #26 we have to consider selecting them.

So you're swallowing the baloney that RG is dishing out on Lenon, eh? Before Foote signed, the team's inside reporter said that Lenon was being looked at as nothing more than a depth/ST player. That's all he's talented enough to be anyway. Suddenly we didn't sign Foote, and RG talks Lenon up a bit, so now you buy it? Not me. If Lenon is our starting WILB, our defense will be amongst the worst in the league.

Other than that, I agree. Rhodes is better than Rolle, IMO. Leinart will have to step up, although it will be no easy task for him. Granted it is hard to see Q go, but Breaston is the guy we need opposite of Fitz going forward.

I just don`t see a reason to act like a 12 year kid about it.Why get bent out of shape over a unfinished product? Too many drama queens having hysterics.

I love it when someone who's completely unprovoked hurls insults at people while at the same time, questioning those people's maturity. bravo.

I always wonder this: If we're not allowed to talk about an unfinished product, what's the point in even operating this message board until September?

Its just a game, no use getting your panties in a wad over free agency. If its always so bad then i dont know why we have had such a great 2 year run.
