Cooper's Contract?

It was a bit of a need pick but he was also a consensus top 8 player. Who else would you rather them take at that point? I don't want anything to do with Tavon Austin. Dee Milliner wasn't really an option as the Cards addressed CB in free agency.

I wanted Dion Jordan but he was gone. The only guys you could really make a case for the Cards taking would have been Star Lotulelei, Kenny Vaccaro, and Jarvis Jones, who all were drafted 14 or later. Star and Jarvis both had medical concerns. Jones also had athletic questions after he tested so poorly at his pro day.

Too much focus on needs can screw up such a high selection. Especially, since needs can change each year. And this is the first I've heard of Cooper being a consensus top 8 player.

I could actually make a case for Tavon Austin who I believe is going to be an instant impact player and matchup problem who would be almost impossible to defend in this offense. Floyd steps up. Robert improves. And Fitzgerald and his HUGE contract could be trade bait in 2014.

Same thing with Dee Milliner who IMO, could be just as good or better than the veterans the team picked up to address the position. And if I were going to make the mistake of selecting a guard that high, I would have selected Chance Warmack.

But, in the end, what would I have done? I would have traded down with the Rams whom I've read called the Browns, Bills, and Cardinals trying to get Austin. And my guess is that Cooper could have probably still been on the board at #16.

NFL.com is now reporting that Mingo has signed with Cleveland. All picks around Cooper have now signed. Won't be long, at least I hope.

Disagree. Not even in what one might consider to be an abnormal year should an offensive guard be selected with the #7 overall selection in the NFL Draft.

If he is as good as the team thinks he is going to be, then he absolutely is worth it at that pick.

Cardinals, Cooper not talking, yet

When addressing the offset-language status of the players taken in the top 10 of the 2013 draft, we didn’t include Cardinals guard Jonathan Cooper, the seventh overall pick.

Cooper was omitted because it’s not known whether offset language will be an issue. And it’s not known whether offset language will be an issue because no substantive talks have occurred between the two sides.
Per a source with knowledge of the talks, there has been only limited engagement between the team and the player, with nothing happening right now.

Time is running out. The Cardinals open camp with practice on Friday, July 26.

How did we go from this to TALKS HAVE NOT STARTED? It does tno say anywhere that talks have not started. For al we know, his agent could have said the parameters look good, but let wait to see what the pick around him do with years and offset?

I guess we all read what we want to read.

No substantive talks has occurred equates to them not getting into the meat of the negotiation. It's not hard to understand. Sure, with all the slotting falling into place, a deal probably gets done in time, but how stupid is it that they haven't started substantive talks yet?

Guard Jonathan Cooper, the seventh overall pick, has not yet signed. Coach Bruce Arians said this morning he’s hopeful that Cooper will sign and arrive soon.

“I’m not as concerned tomorrow and Wednesday as I am with (reporting) Thursday,” Arians said.

Cooper’s financial package should be worth a total of $14.5 million over four years, including a $10 million signing bonus. His agent, Todd France, did not immediately return a phone call today, and Cardinals GM Steve Keim could not be immediately reached for comment.

The hangup likely is in “offset” language that protects the Cardinals in the event Cooper is released before the end of his contract, which is unlikely. Offset language means the Cardinals would not be on the hook for all of Cooper’s salary should he sign with another team.

I don't see anything about talks not happening yet and I am pretty sure Kent Somers would know if that were the case and would report on that since he does not work for the Cardinals.

I can see it now. The Cardinals draft a guard early first round who holds out for the season.

Hello FO, the rooks report tomorrow.

Everybody kept saying don't worry it will get done in time. And here we are playing games with the clock running out.

I still don't see why it is not done yet.

Tick, Tock, Tick, Tock, tick, tick, tick, tick. Alarm clock rings, riiiiiiiiiiiiiiinnnnnnnnnnnnngggggggssssssssss, and Cooper's mother yells, "Johnny, time to get up and get ready for work".
JC: Mom, I'm not going, call Mr. Bidwill and tell him, I'm sick.
Mom: What will all your friends at work, think? And all those nice people at ASFN?
JC: Who cares. Those people (ASFN) are crazy.

Stay tuned!!

As Bruce Arians said yesterday, as long as he is in by Friday for the first full practice, he is not worried.

It is kinda weird that he hasn't been signed yet. On one hand you have BA stating that all the extra work you can give rookies helps get them ready to contribute immediately. I would think that BA wants Cooper inked when the rookies report and that has already come and gone.

Then you see that about half the 1st rd picks haven't signed yet.

I'm not really concerned but it should be a fairly easy thing to get done in time for the rookies start of training camp.

I can see the FO is really getting with it.

Already missed one day. Absolutely no excuses for him not to be in camp yesterday.

Actually there is. ON 910 yesterday they mentioned that the agent wants all bonus money up front, workouts, etc and wants 100% of the contract fully guaranteed.

Again, Bruce said as long as he is here for the first full practice, all is good.

All that stuff is part of the rookie slotting system, especially the guaranteed contract.

Looks like you got turned around in the Spin Zone/Apologist Arena.
