It was a bit of a need pick but he was also a consensus top 8 player. Who else would you rather them take at that point? I don't want anything to do with Tavon Austin. Dee Milliner wasn't really an option as the Cards addressed CB in free agency.
I wanted Dion Jordan but he was gone. The only guys you could really make a case for the Cards taking would have been Star Lotulelei, Kenny Vaccaro, and Jarvis Jones, who all were drafted 14 or later. Star and Jarvis both had medical concerns. Jones also had athletic questions after he tested so poorly at his pro day.
Too much focus on needs can screw up such a high selection. Especially, since needs can change each year. And this is the first I've heard of Cooper being a consensus top 8 player.
I could actually make a case for Tavon Austin who I believe is going to be an instant impact player and matchup problem who would be almost impossible to defend in this offense. Floyd steps up. Robert improves. And Fitzgerald and his HUGE contract could be trade bait in 2014.
Same thing with Dee Milliner who IMO, could be just as good or better than the veterans the team picked up to address the position. And if I were going to make the mistake of selecting a guard that high, I would have selected Chance Warmack.
But, in the end, what would I have done? I would have traded down with the Rams whom I've read called the Browns, Bills, and Cardinals trying to get Austin. And my guess is that Cooper could have probably still been on the board at #16.
