Nice play by Tracy and Micah to get the inning double play! Who do you pitch in the 9th, Micah or Pena?

Putting Owings in the game ruins my previews! Gee, thanks, Bob!

The one good advantage about putting Owings in now is that they wouldn't need to pinch-hit for him in the 9th.

For the love of all humanity, LEAVE MICAH IN THERE to pitch the 9th!

Looks like Qualls could be pitching the 9th.

Great call by Hale. Two outs and he sends him. Nice to see them staying aggressive. That was such a big run with Qualls coming in.

Finally! Gutsy moves by Melvin with the pitchers and it paid off. I assume Micah Owings now starts tomorrow, since he only threw about 10 pitches.

Wonderful win. Stinking flubs are about as lousy a road team as any good team has ever been. I hope all those Cub fans at the game tonight end up stranded on the 101 or arrested by Sheriff Joe for malingering whining and sent to tent city for the night.

It's a good night to be alive and living in Arizona. Another bad night for flub fans. Fine night to be an American.

I would think Micah is availble to pitch in relief tomorrow if they need him.

I have no problem with the decision to pull Randy after 7. You all know he can't go a full game anymore, but that was an incredible start by the greatest pitcher in the history of the MLB. :) 9 more wins to go for him! That was a very fun game to watch. So glad to see Qualls with a shutout inning and you have to be happy for Romero. Now lets get some runs! They need a sweep in this series to get them going as they head into divisional play.

That was the first time Owings ever faced the Cubs. Since he pitched tonight, the updated preview of Tuesday's game...

Marquis vs Petit

After some rough interleague outings at home, Marquis defeated the Giants, allowing just two earned runs in 14 innings over the two games. Marquis' ERA on the road is over two runs less than at home, but he walks more batters away from Wrigley. Marquis does not give up the longball much, in 17 starts, the batter left the yard just eight times. Petit has made only one start this season, holding the Brewers to one run and two hits in six innings several weeks ago. Since then, he has allowed just one run in four innings in relief. Since his July recall, he has pitched 10 innings, struck out seven and not allowed a walk. In 17 2/3 innings this season, he has walked only one batter. In 2007, Petit earned a win against the Cubs. Petit is quietly having a very good season.

Hey, thanks for taking the time to write those little previews. It has really improved the series threads.

Thoughts from last night:

Damn good to beat the stinking Cubbies, the Chicago Republic, the Chicago Sports Stations, etc.

RJ was money! But 7 innings was enough.

I have been touting the way Romero has been nailing the ball - and wanting him to stay in the lineup. Won the game!

I was going to give BoMel props for using Micah, figuring it was brilliant to use him in that spot, because he wouldn't have to pinch-hit, and let him bat in the 8th, pitch the ninth. About broke the TV when Clark came up, and again when Qualls pitched. Qualls did ok, and got the save, but dumb decision, IMHO.

Chip Hale got it right this time on Snyder.

That's exactly what I said to my wife at the time.

A starting pitcher, who also serves as a pinch-hitter, can certainly go two innings. Especially with the problems Qualls has been having.

Logic says . . . leave Owings in for the 9th.

The Mad Scientist (as Sutton and Grace call him) defied logic again, but lucked out this time.

As they used to say, "If you put all the monkeys in the world at all the keyboards, eventually one of them will type the Declaration of Independence."

BTW, according to the Az Republic today, Bob (just call me Brenly) Melvin has used 86 difference lineups in the first 98 games. Brenly used 135 different lineups one season.

Memo to Bob Mediocre: You're supposed to be confusing the opposition, not your own team.

Maybe he made that decision because if he sent Owings out there for two innings, we'd only really have Qualls as the only decent, rested reliever for today's game.... With Owings just making around 10 pitches he should be food for 2-3 innings and there's a good chance we'd need that with our 6th-7th starter pitching today vs. the best offense in the NL.
