Not sure if that includes the posting fee, but that number could be $20 million more.

The Diamondbacks have made no secret of their pursuit of Tanaka this winter, and according to Nikkan, they've offered him a deal for six years and $120MM. Such a contract would be the largest in Diamondbacks history by a wide margin. "Like other teams, we're very interested," CEO Derrick Hall was quoted as saying at a recent meeting of MLB owners. "We want to win this competition." Owner Ken Kendrick also reportedly met with Tanaka directly during his recent tour of clubs in the U.S.

IMO the fact that you don't have to give up any prospects justifies spending a lot more money. And its not my money so...

Another way of looking at is you could trade Bradley+ for someone like Price or you can have a 1-2 of Tanaka and Bradley.

All reports think he will sign with the Yankees.

All reports think he will sign with the Yankees.

Not all reports

•The Cubs are the "lead team" for Tanaka, a source tells Levine (via Twitter).
•The Cubs have made a "real offer" to Tanaka, tweets 670TheScore.com's Bruce Levine, who also notes that one key factor for Tanaka and his wife will be the presence of a Japanese community in his new city. On Thursday, we heard that the Cubs were "pushing hard" for Tanaka, and Gordon Wittenmyer of the Chicago Sun-Times reported on the "sales pitch" the Cubs made to Tanaka last week.

The problem is if there is no Plan B, you don't get anything. Either front office is delusional or this is just about perception and not actually competing.

If they are going to spend that much money on a player, I would prefer an every-day person than a guy who throws once every five games.

I have no idea why the Dbacks think they can hang with the big boys. Is there any doubt that he's going to be a Yankee - or even worse - a Dodger?

Yeah, my first reaction was that this whole Tanaka business was just a PR stunt. I think just about everybody that follows this sort of thing believes that the Dbacks have no chance. I was surprised that they made a real offer.

Read this morning that the Dodgers are going after Arroyo if they don't get Tanaka so that's another name to cross off the list. Who else is left at this point?

Garza and Santana

Or Price and Samardzija in a trade, which I am not a fan of :bang:

If Towers is informed that we are out of it before the deadline, then he needs to get Garza in here. Santana will cost a draft pick and the other two will cost too much.

And if there are 5 teams trying to get Tanaka there are going to be 4 teams scrambling to get what's left after he signs.

Why not just call up Bradley if it comes down to having to trade even MORE prospects for a pitcher?

Maybe but if he's not ready and you force him into that role you might ruin him permanently. Or he might be the next Sherzer.

20 mil a year for 6 years was a good offer but LA or NY will bump it up to get him.

Surprised the offer was leaked considering the request of Tanaka to keep things confidential. That's why the Cubs offer is currently unknown.

http://espn.go.com/blog/chicago/cub...s-await-tanaka-decision?ex_cid=espnapi_public

“I’m going to respect the request of confidentiality that’s come from the agent and the player, just let things play out,” Epstein said.

Because of that confidentiality, very little is known of the offers in front of Tanaka. One source thinks the Cubs will go as high as $25 million to $26 million per year and up to seven years. Others think the Cubs have only the New York Yankees to worry about -- and they’re a big concern.

Of course, maybe this is just part of the "down home good people" selling point.

The D-backs pride themselves on having created what they feel is a unique organizational culture based on giving back to the community, and a family atmosphere that starts with managing general partner Ken Kendrick and team president/CEO Derrick Hall.

That figures to be a point of emphasis when they speak with Tanaka.

"Really, a lot of it is selling who we are and what we're about," Towers said. "I can speak for Ken and Derrick and myself that we're pretty easygoing people that are not real plastic at all. Kind of 'What you see is what you get,' and I think some people like that style. It's pretty casual, but it's real and it's straightforward and not a lot of bells and whistles, just kind of who we are. I think that's a great quality about this organization and what I love about this organization. It's kind of down home good people."

Sorry, just so hard to root for my former hometown team when I think the FO is simply a joke. Painful actully.

You guys are too much. first you bitch that the Dbacks don't emulate the Dodgers, et al and go after these foreign free agents.

Then when the Dbacks DO, you bitch that they are wasting their time, that the Dodgers, Cubs, Yankees, etc always get these type of guys.

I would actually prefer that the Dbacks create one of the strongest farm systems in baseball and generate talent from within. (Which, at one point, looked to be the goal.)

But Kevin Towers apparently disagrees.

Yeah, how could anyone doubt Towers commitment to building from within. Sure, he is dropping 7 million a year for 4th outfielders, trading young pitchers for older ones that are inferior to the guy they replaced. But I have no doubt that despite the older dudes having virtually all been massive disappointments, the young guys need to be moved for a fraction of their value... you know... because they were too flashy... or lacked grit... or were not beaning enough people... or something.

Who does Tanaka compare to? Is he a combination of Sandy Koufax, Bob Gibson, Dwight Gooden, and Mariano Rivera?
