D-Backs, Scherzer come to terms

PHILADELPHIA - It went down to the wire but the Diamondbacks got a deal done with last year's first round pick, right-hander Max Scherzer, agreeing to terms in the final hour before Wednesday night's deadline.

The parameters of the deal were not immediately available, but it's believed to be a major-league deal worth at least $4 million.

Scherzer, a pitcher out of Missouri, was the No. 9 overall pick last year. He is represented by agent Scott Boras, who also negotiated a last-minute deal for shortstop Stephen Drew two years ago.

Not to be a downer but in the comments section of the Republic is says that SI and the Tucson radio station are reporting that a deal did NOT get done.

I'll trust Nick P who is with the team and has inside sources. I would never trust Tucson radio.

The story came up for me. If you look at both the kvoa story and the espn one that is reporting the deal didn't get done they both come from the associated press right around the same time azcentral reported the deal was done. I think the beat writer for the team has better info than the AP.

PHOENIX -- The Arizona Diamondbacks agreed to a contract
with 2006 first-round draft pick Max Scherzer as Wednesday night's
deadline approached.

The Diamondbacks, who chose Scherzer 11th overall last June,
would have lost Scherzer if the deal had not been made by 9 p.m.
local time.

After the deadline passed, Diamondbacks spokesman Mike McNally
said the team had not reached an agreement with Scherzer. Later,
the team said there was a deal.

Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

The former University of Missouri ace is represented by Scott
Boras, known for his tough negotiations. A message left with Boras'
office Wednesday was not returned.

It's the second time in three years the Diamondbacks have gone
down to the wire with their top pick. In May 2005, they signed
shortstop Stephen Drew -- another Boras client -- minutes before they
would have lost his rights. Drew signed a $5.5-million, five-year
deal.

What does him signing a major league deal mean to his future with the club? Do they have to add him to the 40 man roster now or what?

I believe it does mean that he will need to be placed on the 40-man roster. It also means that the signing bonus can be spread out over the length of the contract as opposed to one big check like Upton received.

Good to hear. I love how they made sure they got the guy they wanted. I hope he becomes a good pitcher for us on one of our many future title runs...

Between $4M and $4.5M is a decent deal for this high of a pick, especially since he probably would have gone higher if he were to re-enter the draft.

You can trust Nick. I was his mentor. OK, not his mentor, but I picked on him mercilessly for a couple of years. ;)

OK, I didn't pick on him. Mostly I just sat and listened as he reeled off baseball geek stats. He's one of you guys. Honest.

This thread (and the Scherzer signing) was a rollercoaster of ups and downs. haha.

Glad we got him signed. Now we can look forward to this coming draft as well. The more I look at the farm system, the more I love it.

So how much more money did he actually get to waste a year of his career?

This guy is projected as a reliever isn't he?

Yes it was written this morning that indeed this guy is projected for the bullpen. The guy wastes a year's pay. You really got to wonder just what are they teaching our kids these days.
