The D-backs survived a bizzarro series with the awful Nationals. Now, back in first place, it gets no easier. They'll need to continue hitting and scoring like they did in extra innings of Thursday's game. Ryan Howard just took over the major league home run lead, passing teammate Chase Utley. The Phillies have one of the most powerful offenses in baseball, despite being in the lower third in batting average.
Friday... Davis vs. Kendrick
Davis is historically good against the Phillies, 2-1, 2.93 ERA in six starts. Davis has given up three runs in each of his last three games, with his most recent start being his longest of the season. Another eight innings from Davis will be welcome.
No, not Ken Kendrick, Kyle Kendrick and he has been tough to beat in his last few starts. The Phillies are 13-5 when he starts. He doesn't walk many and doesn't strike out many, either. He received a no-decision in a Philadelphia win at Chase Field earlier this season.
Saturday ... Johnson vs. Eaton
The Phillies will see another lefty. Johnson had his best game of the season several days ago, striking out 10. Johnson is a lifetime 10-3 with a 2.61 ERA against Philadelphia. In 2008, he's 1-4 on the road, but has a much better ERA than he has had at home.
Eaton, the former Padre, got shredded to bits in two of his last four losses. Both those losses were right there in the City of Brotherly Love. Like Kendrick, he is not a big strikeout pitcher. In his last start, he didn't last three innings. The best chance at a D-backs win is Saturday.
Sunday ... Webb vs. Hamels
This time, the D-backs go with the righty and the Phillies go with the lefty.
The Major League win leader comes off a victory where he allowed no runs in six innings, but labored through the game. In fact, he has not lasted longer than six innings in his last three starts. With the All-Star Game coming up, he may just go six on Sunday. He is 3-3, 3.68 ERA lifetime vs. Philadelphia.
Hamels is the Phillies win and strikeout leader. Like Eaton, he has lost his last two home games. Since June, Hamels is 4-2 with a 2.82 ERA. Despite being one of the Phillies steadiest performers, he will not make the trip north to the Big Apple after the game.
