are we blind to his play or high on what he says?

You can't argue the stats - he didn't make a push last year at all.

Leader as a voice? Leader as a player on Sundays?

Dockett missed some time for sure, but to use that as an excuse would be to forget he actually played more snaps than Calais Campbell. Instead there was not enough hit (his Week 1 display embarrassing J.R. Sweezy) and too much miss (most of the rest of the season). No surprise that he had the lowest grade (-15.4) of all 3-4 defensive ends.

Either way it's food for thought

dockett was asked to absorb blockers last year instead of be the penetrating force that he is and always was. Going back to the style he fits best will bring him back to the top of 3-4 DEs again this year. Mark my words.

Dockett is one of the better blitzing 3-4 DEs in the league he just hasnt got to do that role since 2010

Yep. Dockett did what he was asked and remained quiet about it for the most part. He wasn't happy about his role but tried to be a team player. In fact he has previously said that he didn't want to be like Haynesworth and just did what Horton asked even though he didn't like it.

There's no a link, but based on what I assume is a quote, I'm guessing this is from PFF. PFF had Rex Hadnot as their highest-rated guard three or four years ago. Take it with a grain of salt.

I have no problem with how Darnell Dockett played in 2012.

Who cares about Dockett's stats (or ego for that matter)? What's important is the overall play of the defense which was very good last year.

Dockett was pretty miserable with his two gap responsibilities. There were reports of the early on in Horton's tenure. Dockett seems pretty pumped about his new responsibilities under Bowles, but it's a put up or shut up year for him.

good. Him being called the worst will only motivate him to play harder. I expect a huge chip on his shoulder this year

A bogus opinion on DD because one failed to realize what he was asked to do in Horton's scheme...you can bet the rest of the teams in our division have a much higher opinion of him :)

I think you guys are drinking the Kool Aid by the gallon

Tell me there wasn't another 3-4 DE that wasn't assigned the same job on his team.

It's a grade that shows he was beat on play after play...not just gap responsibility.

wake up for one minute and consider it....maybe just maybe he's not the 'animal' we think him to be.

last year 23 tackles 1/5 sacks assisted in just 11 tackles in 15 games...that's 34 tackles in 15 games. Average of 2 per game where he made an impact.

Again 2 plays per game he made an impact....are you rethinking things

Ive watched every snap of his career I dont really need a websites grade to determine his effectiveness. And no, in that style 3-4 the RDE responcibilities are different than the LDE and beyond that dockett draws far more double teams then CC. Watch the tape if you need evidence.

Dockett is a beast, lets revisit this thread in week 9.

He's getting old. That's one of the reason's I was aiming for Lotulelei to be the pick at 7. We'll see how effective he is this year but I can't see him being around much longer.

As everyone else stated its a scheme thing rather then a DDock thing. Counting on him to be free this year to cause problems!

I can't get past the 2 tackles per game stat....I don't care what the scheme was....to only manage 2 tackles per game is pathetic.

if your job is to suck up blockers so others can get the tackles, then it makes sense.

Many things dont make sense when you dont understand the circumstances around them.

The best way to figure it out is to work toward understanding the circumstances prior to analyzing the results.

Darnell has been playing out of his comfort zone the past two years. This has been well documented and discussed by the media, former teammates such as Antonio Smith, and Docket himself. Docket does not have the tools to be a good 5-technique but being moved to the 3 is going to help him immensely.

Also, if you recall correctly, it was rumored prior to Horton's departure that Dockett was going to demand a trade. He was even giving vague responses when asked the question directly. Now, he is much more excited to be on the team than he ever was with Horton as his DC.

His statistics, wherever you found those, are insignificant. Let's revisit this at the end of the season and see how he's performed.

Do we know that he's moving to a three-technique position (lined up shaded on the guard's outside shoulder)? That'd be a weird alignment in a 3-4 defense.

I think he's just taking more one-gap responsibilities. I think he'll still be playing five-technique, or more 4- or 6-technique.

I might also want to add to the whole scheme things, it was Horton's idea of a 3-4 and it acts a lot different than other 3-4s in my opinion...the exotic element of players moving everywhere that a player like DD had to occupy so they could be free was huge.

K9, honest question here. Where do you get all of your football knowledge? Did you play in college or are/were you a coach? I respect your opinion & a few others. Your knowledge of the game & schemes & such just amaze me.

Oh. Thanks for the compliment. It's not often that people say nice things about me here.

My playing experience is limited to a year of pop warner in like 5th grade and a few years of flag football. When I was in graduate school not too long ago I attended a coaching conference in the CA Bay Area where I was lucky to hear Walt Harris talk about the modified West Coast offense, Wade Phillips talk about 3-4 defensive principles, and the elite JuCo coaches in California (a quality of football probably superior to the Patriot League and the Colonial Athletic Conference--some CA high school football programs had FieldTurf years before NFL franchises did). It was really enlightening.

But mostly I've picked it up from reading books and looking to support my counter-intuitive posts that I've made here. I've learned a lot from A Few Seconds of Panic by Stefan Fatsis and Next Man Up by John Feinstein. I also learned a ton about OL play by reading The Blind Side by Michael Lewis, The Essential Smart Football by Chris Brown, reading Ben Muth and Football Outsiders' annual editions and trying to ask the right questions by Google.

In my former life I had way too much free time, so I'd devour these things and pick up a lot of stuff around the way. None of this knowledge is very useful outside of this space. It did nothing to make me a better Madden player.

Dockett did have a poor year, statwise. But all that matters, to me anyway, is how our defense performed and whether or not he did what he was supposed to. Our defense was really good and he fulfilled his assignment(s). Dock is undersized to be engulfing lineman but that's what he did all year long. I posted several times last year about plays where Dock not only engulfed his own man but occupied Campbell's on looping stunts. Sometimes even when Dock was beat he was able to maneuver his guy into the path of Campbell's man who was in pursuit. There was one play, last year, just a small dumb play, that exemplifies that: the RB is speeding toward the sidelines to his left, all the way across the field from Dock and Campbell, and instead of Dock racing to tackle him, he tosses his blocker into the guy ready to block Campbell, so Campbell can tackle the RB near the sidelines. That doesn't show up on the statsheet. It takes an athlete like Campbell to make those moves--rise from his stance, speed around, shed, etc--but it doesn't even work without a dude like Dock occupying those blockers.

Now is the time to tear up his contract and lock him up long-term.
