Maybe. I hope you're right. But Foote is a mercenary on a one-year deal who was signed late in the process and won't be here next year. He has no relationships to anyone on the roster, he's not a playmaker, and he's at the end of his career.

I think that Foote can be a valuable addition as a teacher and mentor (maybe), but he's not part of the #birdgang in the way that Dockett and Dansby were.

Dansby was the same way though. The leadership that Dansby provided in that one year he was here as a mercenary was so important to the sucess the Cardinals had last year.

Yes Foote wasn't an original "Birdgang" member but I believe he will fill the leadership role on our defense.

But Dansby was part of the historically great draft class with Dockett and Fitz and part of the original Birdgang. He had a legacy with the Cards and was a known quantity who came in the door.

Foote hasn't played quality football in a season, and he's clearly on the downside of his career. The situations aren't remotely comperable.

Not only that, but our 6th best defender (and one I'd argue belongs up there ahead of Dockett) is coming off a gruesome injury. And our 7th best player is just out of rehab.

Man...when you think about the fact that Mathieu and Abraham were arguably our 6th and 7th best defenders last year it really makes you realize how awesome that D was.

Right I nearly put Honey Badger in my top 5 but I figured with him not starting early on and then getting hurt I left him off.

And good point on Abraham too the last half of the year he was extremely valuable to our defense.

Going to be tough to repeat last years defense. Secondary should be better against the pass but the front 7 has to be weaker with all the attrition

I don't think they have to compare. As long as Foote backs his leadership with his play, others will accept him as the leader. From what I have seen in the last 2 preseason games, he's a decent lb.

And a part of that legacy was that Dansby would chase the money. We all knew that Dansby would only be here for a year if the Cardinals didn't give him a big contract. Dansby was a cheap rental for one year. Just like Cromartie will be for us this year if he has success.

Leadership is leadership. You don't have to be drafted by a team to provide it. It didn't take long for a player like Paris Lenon "not part of the original Birdgang" to be named the leader of the defense a couple of years ago. Natural leaders rise to the top.

And Paris Lenon "lead" some terrible, undisciplined defenses.

All he had to do was not be Daryl Washington.

Well, that's kind of the rub, isn't it? There's a profound difference between a "decent LB" and a borderline All-Pro.

True but you don't need to be an all pro to be leader. If Foote backs up his leadership with his play, if it's decent or all pro play, players will follow.

I think Foote and Abraham need to step up and lead this defense. As a matter of fact it may even help Abraham as it would challenge him as a leader to walk the straight and narrow because he would then be the leader of the defense.

What??? The Ray Horton years were terrible defenses?

What happened to this guy?

I was wrong about Paris Lenon. When he's surrounded by talent, he can be a real asset. He still gets pushed around a little bit in the run game, but the respect that his teammates have in giving him the Captain's letter two years running speaks volumes.

All this talk about a leader needing to step up.... I'm not worried about the heart of the defense. He's about to come off the PUP list.

And No I don't mean Shamu smart guys.

When you play professional football, you have to be able to backup what you are preaching. Foote may be the guy who speaks up but he is not the guy who can say "get on my back" and then make a play to back it up. That is what Dansby did. That is what Dockett did. That was what Wilson tried to do.

When Palmer throws an INT inside our 20 vs the Seahawks and we need 3 stops, that is what we are missing without Dansby and Dockett.

Randy Gregory- Nebraska

Shalique "the freak" Calhoun - Michigan State

Brodrick Mckinnley- Miss ST.

Possible Dockett replacemant....Michael Bennett- Ohio St

Benardrick McKinney was moved to ILB by Miss St. Probably not going top 5, but is an athletic freak.

If I am the Cards, I might draft 4 LBs next year. 2 ILBs and 2 OLBs. At least one of each should hit.

I have never seen Foote play. Is he not that good? I know he is no where near Dansby, but he can't be that bad. He looked great in the first 2 preseason games.

DD's age and the lack of good YOUNG depth along the DL is the main reason I was clamoring for Star Lotulelei to be the Cards #1 pick last year.

Wow. Tough week for you bro.

I can't believe fans think Dockett, DWash, and Dansby can be replaced by Frostee Rucker, Kevin Minter, and Larry Foote with the AZ defense not missing a beat. It'll be fun to watch to see if they can but..... And if they're top 5 again this year Bowles will be Asst coach of the year.

If they are top 5 again Bowles will be a lock for a HC job next year methinks.

Do they give out an Assistant Coach of the Decade award? I'd nominate him for that if he could just make us a top 10 defense this season. In addition to our losses we still don't know how long it will be before Mathieu and Alameda can be back to form nor whether Abraham has another Fountain of Youth year in him.

Whoa. Who has been saying that???

Oh about 50 posts in the Dansby Washington and Dockett threads.

Next man up. Rucker has been playing better. Minter will step up.

Washington went from being the most important player on the D to being readily replaced by Minter in a matter of hours.

Did you not read those threads. And no I'm not going back through 100 pages of posts to prove it.

Next man up doesn't mean that the Defense doesn't skip a beat.
