and cut Navarre?

I say yes

Per Len @ ESPN

Once regarded as a solid prospect, and a player who might eventually emerge as a starter in the league, quarterback Dave Ragone has been released by the Houston Texans after three seasons.

Ragone, 26, played in only two games in three seasons. He started two contests as a rookie, when David Carr was injured, and completed 20 of 40 passes for 135 yards, with one interception. He also rushed for 51 yards on six carries.

But over the past two seasons, Ragone did not appear in a single game, and as a pure, dropback pocket passer, he was probably ill-suited for the offense being installed by Texans first-year coach Gary Kubiak this spring. That offense will require more mobility from the quarterback and movement skills have never been Ragone's strong suit.

On the revamped depth chart, Ragone has been replaced as the No. 3 quarterback by rookie Quinton Porter, an undrafted free agent from Boston College who has impressed the coaches. Beset by a string of injuries, Porter started only 17 games during his college career.

The Texans earlier in the spring signed former Miami backup Sage Rosenfels to take over the No. 2 spot behind Carr, a job held by veteran Tony Banks the past four seasons. Banks was not re-signed and remains available as an unrestricted free agent.

Ragone was the team's third-round choice in the 2003 draft, the 88th player selected that year, following a standout career at Louisville. He signed a three-year, $1.35 million contract that included a signing bonus of $440,000. Then, this year, the Texans retained his rights as a restricted free agent and earlier this month signed him to the one-year qualifying offer of $721,600.

Last spring, playing for the Berlin Thunder, Ragone earned offensive most valuable player honors in the NFL Europe League. In leading his team to a World Bowl berth, Ragone completed 158 of 251 passes for 1,746 yards, with 13 touchdown passes and just two interceptions. He established an NFLEL record by throwing 174 straight passes without an interception.

Because he is not a "vested" veteran, Ragone is subject to league waivers, and could be claimed by a team seeking a young No. 3 quarterback.

Being a Louisville fan i say keep Navarre and sign Ragone. Why not both? Does anyone really think Jeff Otis has a realistic chance to stick and help this team?

Does anyone really think we'll carry 4 QBs?

Navarre, for all his faults, knows the offense. I say stick with him. He's not going to win you any games, but he has the potential to be a guy that won't lose 'em for you, IMO.

don`t think the cards will carry 4 QBs.Warner Leinart and Navarre seem to be top 3.Davey and Otis seem to be the odd men out barring injury or something else (exceptional preseason play). Another thing Ragone could bring to table is another LH QB with a little actual real game experience.Don`t think it would hurt to have another QB around.

I say, keep Navarre. He knows the system and Green likes him (almost enough to play him in real games).

It wouldn't shock me if the Cards showed some interest, but only after they see who gets cut on June 1st. The price would be right on Ragone and he has the arm strength that the other backups lack. He is certainly a better fit for the type of offense Green likes to run.

Coming out of college I thought he had a real shot in the NFL, but he has never been in a situation where he got a true shot with an offense he is suited to run. He also offers the opportunity to groom as a long-term backup, something I doubt Navarre wants to aspire to at this stage of his career. Ragone may have be okay with that type of future at this stage.

Why bother, we are set at QB. There are more important things to address than upgrading what will likely be our 3rd string QB. Navarre hasnt gotten much chance to show what he can or cant do anyway.

Anybody signed would be competing for 3rd string. I think Navarre is #3 and the rest of the guys are along for fun in Flagstaff.

I liked him coming out of LSU, but like too many college prospect Davey simply never progressed. He's no better now than he was then. Tons of potential, but never realized it.

Navarre will be a decent back-up. No reason to replace him.

He has only played in one game going 14 for 24 for 174 yards with 1 TD and 1 INT. Certainly not impressive number - especially in our system, but not that bad either. AND that in a game where he started as the #3 QB - not as easy situation to be #3 at kick-off time and then starting by halftime.

As a Louisville fan I second your motion. Though It might be best for him to go to another team where he could compete to be the #2 guy.

Yep, I liked him out of college too but he didn't get to play in New England and never progressed. Had we picked him over Josh there's no telling if he'd have progressed or not. Physical talent for sure but he just hasn't gotten any better, still the same scatter arm he was coming out of LSU.

It does not MATTer...before training camp closes Navarre will be the BACKUP to the BACKUP...he will NEVER see the field INSIDE THE LINES except during warmups...thank God for that!
