Very good movie but I see why Russ said what he said before. The animation goes back and forth between spectacular to odd sometimes. The CGI for the most part is still fantastic but there are times where is seemed like they didn't spend enough time. As mentioned the Bear CGI was horrible. There are also times that the CGI effects looked extremely awkward when the Apes were riding the horses or walking. However, other times it was simply seamless.
The storyline was pretty good but I would have still liked to see Franco in the film (other than a video). It just seemed like it was appropriate for him to be in the film but they went another way. Also, Gary Oldman was seriously underutilized. The end scene does feel like a copycat of the end seen in Twilight and again in the last Hunger games film. I get why they did it but it's seems "been there done that" now. I was expecting more at the end for some reason.
All in all, lots of action, they moved the storyline along and setup future movies. The one thing though that I wonder is where are they going with the Apes? Are they going to continue to be more "monkey" versus human for the rest of the series? Considering where the past films went (including the Tim Burton) film, it almost seems appropriate that they continue to evolve and become more human like. That really wasn't addressed but I wonder if that continues to happen with each film.
I would recommend this. Especially if you liked the first film. It will be interesting to see where the next one goes.
