Cardinals coach Dennis Green was fired Monday, according to an NFL source, a day after his team concluded its third straight losing season under his guidance. The team has called a 2 p.m. news conference.
Green was 16-32 and is owed about $2.5 million for the fourth and final year of his contract.
Green came to Arizona in 2004 promising immediate success and predicting 10 victories in his first season. Instead, the Cardinals made no progress, going 6-10, 5-11 and 5-11 the last three years.
Green’s tenure will be defined by his impatience. He started five different quarterback, fired seven assistant coaches and made numerous questionable personnel moves.
The Cardinals started this season with renewed hope. They signed running back Edgerrin James in the off-season, drafted quarterback Matt Leinart with the 10th overall pick and sold every ticket to every game.
But the team couldn’t deliver on its promise. After winning their season opener, the Cardinals lost eight straight, including three close games at home.
By the time the club recovered, it was too late. The Cardinals won four of their last seven, but that wasn’t enough to save Green’s job.
Under Green, the Cardinals missed prime opportunities to contend for playoff spots. The NFC was soft in 2004 and again this year. Seattle finished just 9-7, yet won the NFC West. The Giants, at 8-8, secured one of the two wildcard playoff spots.
