This show has not only jumped the shark it has leaped above sharknado also!

:D

I felt like this happened in Season 6 with the Louis Greene character, but they've always flirted with absurdity because of the premise. The absurd formula:

1. Dexter finds a new homicidal play pal.

2. Sometimes that new friend comes ready to play. Sometimes Dexter helps them discover their "dark passenger," implying he has super powers who can change a person's chemistry in a way usually only a violent childhood or a serious head injury can. Either that or the ability to become totally detached from our humanity and any sense of remorse comes much easier than we ever realized. We just need a professional coach. I guess.

It's followed by one of 3 scenarios, sometimes all 3 in the same season:

A. Debra finds a way to become sexually involved with the one man that can bring Dexter down

B. Debra stumbles her way into love life of Dexter's play pal, sometimes with both oblivious to their totally improbable connection.

C. Absent A or B, Debra gets the hots for her stepbrother.

I imagine scenarios being drawn from a hat, or maybe a Season Story Thread MadLib, to determine which way they will write the main story lines.

I was so happy someone killed LaGuerta. I wish they had also killed off Debra ... in Season 1. Most. Annoying. Character. Ever. It's like watching a grown woman as played by a 13-year-old pubescent boy. I have an overwhelming urge to give her a swirlie in the locker room.

I could go on. I'm tired. I stopped watching this show. I'm just here to complain about it going from pretty interesting to totally unwatchable in a big hurry.

Time Warner Cable is killing me. I sat through three AWFUL seasons of Dexter just to see how it freaking ends and now that they're getting to it...my cable company blacks out Showtime?! i want to know just how bad this thing got with my own two eyes and ears!

That sucks. I've stuck with Dexter this long, so I need to see it through to the end. That being said, I am ready for it to be over. It just doesn't feel like must-see television anymore. More like an obligation.

As for this season, IMO:
It sucks too and you aren't missing much. It's spun its wheels so far with way too many setup episodes.

LOL, Exactly what I was thinking when watching this. Could he BE any more obvious?

I literally laughed out loud at that scene. I recently watched the pilot and it's amazing how terrible this show has become.

Watching it right after Breaking Bad doesn't help either.

Yeah. Like "last season of Lost" awful.

Hey, I liked the last season of Lost.

It's depressing how terrible this final season is. So far the entire season has felt like one, long, filler episode. Hell, it still could have been great with a completely obvious "Dexter on the run" premise.

But. Nope. We're just treading water and introducing brand new characters halfway into the final season. 3 episodes left and it feels like they haven't even gotten started yet.

The last season of Lost, like the last season of Dexter, was built on unfulfilled promises. Almost everyone was fed up with the show at that point, but felt so invested that they almost had an obligation to see how it ended.

Lost tried to tie up some loose ends and end some story lines at least. Yes, they were sloppy at times, but Dexter doesn't even feel like it is trying. I have the feeling the creators knew how it would end (the final episode), but didn't have any real ideas for a season leading up to it. So we tread water and wait for a payoff that most likely will never come.

Sadly, when compared to another departing show like Breaking Bad, you can truly see how bad Dexter is. While BB ratchets up the intensity and more and more of the main character's story becomes unraveled, in Dexter, nothing is changing and nothing is unraveling. He still lives his life without any threat from the outside. The stakes have not been raised.

It is setting us up for a slap-dash, half-ass ending. Most of us probably expect that Dexter either dies or he escapes to Argentina. Now I think he will kill this season's big bad and continue on with his way of life as if nothing has changed.

the biggest problem is that the show is just boring. and whatever happened to what's his face not stopping until he found out what really happened to La Guerta?

and why the hell was the random black chick they threw in the mix this season promoted above quinn...and why did they think we would ever give a crap about that storyline?

and MOST IMPORTANT...why the hell did they stop getting the babysitter naked every episode?! that was the best part of this season!

As disappointing as some of the other seasons have been, this season is 1000 times worse. Just so bad.

- Debra is a drugged out mess over the guilt of killing LaGuerta, confesses to the murder in a police interrogation room and then tries to kill herself and Dexter. No consequences.
- Hannah is a fugitive killer. No need to change my appearance. I'm just a hot blonde that everyone will recognize.
- Gee, the nurse at the hospital ID'd Hannah as the person who brought Harrison into the ER but Deb says it was her. If only emergency rooms had security cameras, the random US Marshall guy would be able to figure it out.
- Oh look at that, 2 more people associated with Dexter end up dead. What do you think Miami Metro? *crickets*
- Deb will stop at nothing to catch Hannah, who by the way tried to kill her last season and drugged her again this season. Dex: "Hey Deb, it's cool if Hannah crashes at your place?" Deb: "Not sure. Oh look at that, she makes a kick ass salad. She can stay!"
- "Hey Batista, how's the investigation into the death of your ex-wife who you said you still loved?" Batista: "Who? I'm sorry I was distracted by the epic decision to give the sergeant position to that black woman who's name nobody knows over my boy Quinn." That plot line really went places.
- Masuka's daughter
- And this last episode: Dexter's been obsessing over this new killer for some unknown reason. He really hasn't fealt the need to kill in a long time but he just has to get this guy instead of leaving. The guy doesn't really care about Dexter, he just wants to be back with mommy. But eventually Dexter makes him an enemy by continuing to go after him. The guy threatens Dexter's family and Dexter says he needs to kill him now, not because he feels the need to kill but because Saxon is a danger to the people he loves. Finally an actual reason Dexter needs to go after the guy. Dexter catches him and then realizes, "Hey, I don't feel the need to kill anymore." We ALREADY knew that! He just said it 5 minutes ago! He was going to kill him because he was a threat. But hey, he doesn't fell the need so he leaves the killer alone with his 100 pound sister to somehow take down and just takes off. And random US Marshall guy doesn't recognize the guy that there is now a city wide manhunt for?!

oh my lord...this show...it's just AWFUL. I mean, someone else said in this thread, but when you compare how Breaking Bad is going out versus Dexter, it's just laughable. I mean...that was the penultimate episode of the SERIES just now and who gave two craps about, well, pretty much ANYTHING that happened in the episode?

and the entire arc of "love conquers all" and cures Dexter...REALLY?!

When you think about the Season with the Trinity Killer, which IMO is some of the best TV showtime has ever put out, it is just sad to see how far this show has fallen.

At least I only have to give up one more hour of my life to see how it ends and then I can be done with this obligation forever.

In interviews, the show runners say that the ending was not the obvious choice. I am not so sure about that. To me, it was the most obvious choice.

The least obvious choice would have been for the buffoons at Miami Metro to actually catch Dexter in the act and have him die in the electric chair, you know, since they only solve like 20% of the murders in their city.

The execs said they didn't want to re-hash his secret being outed because they already did the "discovery" angle twice with Doakes and Laguerta. Um, no. Not the same thing.

There was one respectable "twist" in the finale, but other than that, it was messy. Went out with a whimper instead of a bang.

Just like the rest of the season, the finale was full of bad writing and plot holes. It was a little better than the past few episodes but it still wasn't good. Just left me with a "meh" feeling. It's over and I don't have to waste an hour watching every week.

I have the last three episodes on the DRV and frankly I have no desire to watch them. I'm sure I'll delete them soon.

I had such high hopes for this series when I started this thread, oh well.

Debra's sudden turn of events seemed strange and forced. Also, they should have ended the show with Dexter dying in the hurricane. The superfluous lumberjack return was dumb. Plus, good idea leaving Harrison with a fugitive killer on the run.

Watch through John Lithgow's season. It really is some of the best TV showtime ever put out. Then it got a new show runner and went into the toilet.
