What poise exhibited by Halsey as he "pulls a Houdini impersonation" to escape the Mets bottom of the 3rd threat:

K. Benson grounded out to third
- J. Reyes singled to left
- M. Cairo singled to left, J. Reyes to second
- J. Reyes stole third, M. Cairo stole second
- C. Beltran struck out swinging
- M. Piazza walked
- C. Floyd grounded out to second
- End of Inning (0 Runs, 2 Hits, 0 Errors)

Only problem is that Halsey already has thrown 60 pitches (48 for strikes though)...

5-Ks and 1-W thus far.....

I figure they'll keep him in until at least the 6th inning since the BP is obviously "shaky".........

The Dbacks struggles with RISP and less than 2-outs continues:

- C. Counsell doubled to right
- J. Cruz Jr. flied out to deep right, C. Counsell to third
- L. Gonzalez walked
- T. Glaus struck out swinging
- S. Green flied out to deep center
- End of Inning (0 Runs, 1 Hit, 0 Errors)
Scoring Summary

Still 2-0 Dbacks

Due-Up:
Benson 0-1
Reyes 0-2
Cairo 1-1

Well... Halsey has retired 5 consecutive batters.. which includes inducing Benson out on grounder to SS to lead-off the Mets bottom of the 5th...

However, Reyes just got his 3rd hit off of Halsey..

1 on-1 out.

Glaus looked like he hurt his hand. I wonder if he had to go on the disable list if Conor Jackson would get the call up and Tracy go to third? I think if Glaus ever went on the DL they would call up Green.

Halsey pitching a very good game. He has been able to get out of a lot of jams. What a difference Cruz makes to this offense. 2-0 Diamondbacks in the 6th.

Halsey does it yet again.... What veteran leadership/"chutzpah" does he possess.. Doesnt he pitch like a seasoned 10-year veteran?

- K. Benson grounded out to shortstop
- J. Reyes singled to left
- M. Cairo singled to right, J. Reyes to second
- C. Beltran popped out to shallow center
- M. Piazza flied out to right

Still 2-0 Dbacks heading into the 6th

Due-Up:
1)Tracy 1-2
2)Clayton 0-2
3)Snyder 2-2

Notice how Snyder has "caught on fire" since Hill was demoted... Usually one would become complacent when winning a starting job in any position regardless of sport, however, Snyder is just "getting better all the time"....

Counsell goes "clutch" for the Dbacks... Lord... did he ever "spare" the Dbacks from complete futility with RISP....

C. Tracy singled to right center
- R. Clayton reached on fielder's choice, C. Tracy to second
- C. Snyder struck out swinging
- B. Halsey sacrificed to pitcher, C. Tracy to third, R. Clayton to second
- C. Counsell singled to center, C. Tracy and R. Clayton scored
- J. Cruz Jr. struck out swinging
- End of Inning (2 Runs, 2 Hits, 0 Errors)

Besides Counsell's 2-run basehit the other clutch play was Halsey brilliantly executing the sac-bunt which set-up Counsell perfectly... Melvin showing some impressive "small-ball" strategy....

4-0 Dbacks heading into the Mets 6th:

Due-Up:
1) Floyd 0-2
2) Cameron 1-2
3) Wright 0-2

Floyd promptly fouled-out to Glaus on Halsey's 1st pitch to begin the inning...

Counsell makes it 4-0. Maybe they won't need to go to the bullpen tonight.

I agree... just hope the Dbacks can add even more insurance runs.... Just dont want to see Bruney or Koplove out there... been dreading every single moment they've been in the game over the past month......

Halsey continues to flourish when its needed the most..... Just enjoy how the Dbacks added a couple of runs in their half of the 6th and Halsey promptly went out there and "shut the Mets down"......

4-0 heading to the Dbacks 7th

1)Gonazlez 0-2 (1 walk)
2)Glaus 0-3
3)Green 0-2 (1 walk)

At least the "G-Force" is starting this inning since they've been struggling with RISP.....

Koo replaces Benson for the Mets

Benson pitching-line:

6.0 8 4 4 2 7 1
I H R ER W K HR

Fortunately Glaus isnt showing total "ill-effects" and has remained in the game to this point.....

Congrats to Halsey getting his first hit and rbi as a Diamondback. Counsell just walks with the bases loaded, 7-0. The boo birds are out.

Halsey helps his own cause:

I guess there was a "collective sigh of relief' when Clark was placed on the on-deck circle as just a decoy rather than lifting Halsey from the game...

- D. Koo relieved K. Benson
- L. Gonzalez flied out to right
- T. Glaus singled to center
- S. Green singled to center, T. Glaus to third
- C. Tracy hit sacrifice fly to center, T. Glaus scored
- R. Clayton doubled to left, S. Green to third
- C. Snyder intentionally walked
- B. Halsey singled to shortstop, S. Green scored, R. Clayton to third, C. Snyder to second
- C. Counsell walked, R. Clayton scored, C. Snyder to third, B. Halsey to second

Mets removed Koo in favor of another reliever...

Now the Mets need a TD (X-tra point)

7-0 Dbacks

Bases still loaded for the Dbacks and 2-outs

Cmon Cruz Jr... could still use more insurance runs regardless.....

Aybar comes in and Ks Cruz Jr.

7-0 Dbacks heading into the Mets 7th inning...

7th inning stretch now.... Could certainly use some peanuts and cracker-jacks now since I'm starved, but dont want to go out anywhere until this game is over....

Due-up for the Mets:
1)D. Mientkiewicz 0-2
2)More than likely a PH for Aybar...Chris Woodward
3)J. Reyes 3-3

Halsey "cruises" thru the 7th with "relative ease" shutting down the Mets in order..... Finally "retires" Reyes... a solid defensive gem by Clayton on the Woodward ground-out...

Heading to the Dbacks 8th:

Due-Up... "The G Force" again to start the inning... let's hope they "deliver" the same results they did the previous inning

1)Gonzalez 0-3
2)Glaus 1-4
3)Green 1-3

Mike DeJean now in for the Mets and retires Gonzo on a hard liner to begin the inning.....

Okay...let's see if Melvin keeps Halsey in there to at least begin this inning

Due-up for the Mets:
1)Cairo 2-2
2)Beltran 0-3
3)Piazza 0-2

Well.. Koplove is brought-in to relieve Halsey.....

I guess the Dbacks had enough runs and Halsey already threw 113 pitches (80 for strikes)... Most were in the earlier goings as he seemed to settle down as the game progressed....

Koplove promptly Ks Cairo, reitres Beltran on a pop-up......

Pitching line on Halsey:

7 6 0 0 1 6 0
I H R ER W K HR

Koplove Ks Piazza to end the Mets 8th by retiring then 1-2-3... Probably the best inning Koplove has pitched in a couple months.... Encouraging report on Aquinos's progress that his velocity was topping around 92 MPHs during his last
rehab start... Imagine him back... WOW.....

Due-up for the Dbacks 9th
1)Clayon 1-4
2)Snyder 2-3
3)More than likely a PH for Koplove... Kata the "Katalyst" (havent used that since '03).....

Kata "reverts back" to his '03 "Katalyizing ways" with a 2-out double

-C. Counsell popped out to shortstop

Now heading into the Mets 9th:

1)Floyd 0-3
2)Cameron 1-3
3)Wright 0-3

Valverde now in relief........

Valverde also back to his former "Papa Grande" form... How refreshing....

- J. Valverde relieved M. Koplove
- M. Kata at second
- C. Floyd struck out swinging
- M. Cameron walked
- M. Cameron to second on fielder's indifference
- D. Wright flied out to center
- D. Mientkiewicz flied out to deep center

Dbacks win 7-0

That's it "my friend"..... Everyone contributed in some fashion this game......

Probably one of the most "complete games" I've had the privilege to watch in quite some time....

From the power supplied by Cruz Jr., to the timely clutch hitting by Counsell, to Halsey pitching like he's been in the Majors for the past 10+ years with one of the most "well-crafted" performances... True, he was wild initially, but he was nearly unhittable his final 2 innings and that well executed sac-bunt that Counsell followed with that pivotal 2-run basehit.... Must not overlook the impressive defense contributions (especially of Clayton and Counsell)....

And what an effort by Koplove and Valverde in their respective innings of relief...

Also.. must applaud Melvin for his "deft" use of "small-ball" and never losing confidence in Halsey...... Can't wait until tomorrow:

Final Line:
Dbacks: 7 Runs-14 Hits-0 Errors
Mets: 0 Runs- 6 Hits-1 Error

Next Game: Jun 1, 2005 at NY Mets, 4:10 pm (AZ Time)

B. Webb
6-1 3.39 ERA

vs.

V. Zambrano

*Must not bring up Conor too soon*

Sorry - after watching Tracy hit into two GIDPs tonight, I'm trying to send a telepathic message to the front office.

Ninth inning: Green drives in Glaus, only to get erased by another Tracy GIDP; what's worse is the next two batters got on base (Clark/Cintron)!

Bringing Connor up really isn't a necessity right now. What we should do is go with the hot bat (Clark) until it cools down.
