I'm not suggesting we trade Conor or Quentin for some average reliever. The FO needs to be throruogh and earmark who's expendable within the organization (Tracy, Hairston, and Terrero are a few examples) and who we want to trade for and see what kind of deal can be worked out. The fact remains that this team will not be able to keep pace with the Padres if our bullpen stays at the pace they are at right now. There's a huge differnce between making a kneejerk reaction and smartly filling a need.
Oh, and Ortiz blows. Everybody (other than the DBack FO apparently) that has seen Ortiz pitch or viewed his stat sheet over the past few years could tell you this guy was in serious decline.
I was not necessarily insinuating that you had suggested that the Dbacks should trade either Jackson or Quentin for a reliever, however, other GMs are aware that is a major weakness of the Dbacks and would resort to anything to exploit that....
The MAJOR question is though...what relievers are available? Urbina was at the beginning of the season, however, now since Urbina has since supplanted Percival as a closer...that elimates one option....
Would the Orioles part with Jorge Julio? I'm honestly not so sure since BJ Ryan tends to struggle once every so often.......
I know I'm emphasizing closers though... Middle-relievers.... the Indians David Riske has been rumored to be available on the trading block, but he's been pitching "lights-out" for the Indians..I just dont think them or anyone would sacrifice any relief help whatsoever since to reiterate what I said earlier is that it is essentially at a premium which is why it might take a drastic cost for the Dbacks to upgrade theirs... Hence, we'll have to accept Ligtenberg, Lopez, Koplove, etc in that role regardless of how horrid they have been....
I don't see too many teams wanting Hairston since he's a major defensive liability and inconsistent offensively since he tends to want to pull everything..
Tracy.. the Dbacks shouldnt deal him as of yet since Tony Clark (even though I've always/have been extremely impressed with contributions) cant withstand the rigours of being an every day 1B due to his lingering back problems that he's had for quite a few years.. I wouldnt want to see Green play 1B either because that would force the Dbacks to promote either Jackson or Quentin up too prematurely....
Terrero... still no true long-term solution in CF and we're not certain if Cruz Jr. is completely healthy on a short-term basis either.... Would you want to see McCracken as an every day CF? Absolutely not.....
We shall just wait and see what happens once both Lyon and Aquino have returned back and also when Valverde is back at full-strength before a move out of desperation is made....
