What if Dennis Green is no more or less successful in Arizona than he was in Minnesota (i.e., he's learned nothing, makes all the same errors in professional judgment, lasts no longer as head coach, and his Cardinals have no better on-field performance than his Vikings teams did). What can Cards fans look forward to?

*Green will be here for the next decade.
*The Cards won't have a losing season again until 2013.
*They'll go to the playoffs eight of the next nine seasons, and play in two NFC Championship games (sadly, losing both).
*Win or lose, the Cards will have one of the highest-scoring, most exciting offenses in the league.

In short, should he merely equal his track record with the Vikings, Dennis Green will be the longest-tenured, winningest coach in the long, storied history of the Cardinals franchise.

So what, exactly, are you so concerned about?

WC
What am I concerned about???

I guess you could sum it up by saying: Maybe Green isn't quite the genius some people make him out to be.

Maybe there has been a rush to judgement that might end up resulting in less than the hoped for and/or expected success, especially in the long run.

Maybe its a big mistake in being overly simplistic and a little naive to blindly ignore or fail to take into sufficient account some red flags that DO exist.

Maybe some of that won/lost record that is the flag everyone is running up the pole right now in his behalf, is due, not just to Dennis Green....but "in spite" of "him".

Maybe "he" is too quick to take......or some people are a little too eager to give ..."him".....more credit than "he" deserves.

Maybe Tony Dungy, Brian Billick, & Foge Fazio, were ultimately more resposible for some of the success "he" is getting credit for.

Maybe there were circumstances BACK THEN that contibuted to the success the Vikings had, but are not repeatable NOW, AND IN THE FUTURE for the Arizona Cardinals.

Like for instance....

How much of "his" early success was really a hold-over from what Bud Grant had essentially built???
"He" inherited some pretty good talent and experience, especially on the offense. Remember, Bud Grant had been there something like 17 years. His retiring seemed to throw some turmoil into the mix. The famous Hershel Walker deal had also contributed to the scenario then. Green came in just about the time the Vikings were finally escaping from that draft crippling deal by the owners at that time. He also inherited an offensive line and receiving corps that a lot of people would have died for, so to speak.

I think an appropiate comparison that might be made is that maybe Dennis Green got credit for some of the success that had been "set up" by Bud Grant...just like John Gruden came to Tampa Bay to end up getting credit for the success that TONY DUNGY had "set up".

Undeniably Green struck some real pay dirt with draft selections like Robert Harris, and the real biggy...Randy Moss, among others.
But he also, simultaneously, exhibited a tendancy to make some real stinkers too. That's not really a big concern for me, at the moment, other than the fact that, even the best "eyes for talent" sometimes whiff or negated by injury...so there's never any guarantee of success there for ANYONE.

Maybe more people should pay heed to what happened in 2000 in Minnesota when 6 of Green's staff left, for one reason or another. The "Biggie" being Foge Fazio, who had been DC for 4 years after replacing the departed Dungy, resigned saying he essentially felt the whole situation in Minnesota had been allowed to deteriorate to an almost hopeless one due to poor cap management and lack of decent long-term planning.
......the next 2 years proved him right.

Maybe those "rumors" that some of Green's "preferred" coaches, couldn't really coach that well ....are indeed true.

maybe...maybe....maybe.....
Too many exist right now to justify a real comfortable feeling, for me.
Maybe all these red flags mean nothing.
Maybe Dennis Green has learned from the past.
Maybe it's best, all around, that people don't just stick their heads in the sand, but keep their heads up... observant...willing to ask questions... keeping the general awareness level at a "healthy" degree.

Some food for thought here............

What if Danny Boy Snyder kinda did his usual thing?....you know..."Genius Danny"....more money than class or brains.....
and his "usual thing" being King Squat ( the opposite of King Midas)...you know... mess up a wet....well you know...everything he touches.

What if once he started his little jet set, gotta get Jim Fassel,..routine...that pumped everone's adrenaline.?
And What if: Rod Graves.....remembering his school-hood days from last year's draft and free agency.....and Michael...Mr "new way" Bidwill Jr, maybe thinking....."hmmmm, heat's on here. Showing I got the brains and power here could REALLY be important to my future, I better not screw this up".

Sooo.....

They don't want to get schooled again here, where they in the big boy's game now.

Enter.....the co-leaders in this year's "Mr Popularity" contest, according to "most recent polls". "Smiley Denny Green" & "Mr. Lemons" Jim Fassel.
Dennis is bright....he's prepared for this week or so for 2 years now. He's charming, articulate, has done at least a reasonable amount of homework.
Meanwhile Fassel is Exhausted. He left a big part of himself in N.Y. He seems to be able to name his own ticket at the moment..so "it's all cool"...no problem anyway.

...and what if....now Rod and Mike are saying " Damn....Green was really impressive...maybe we really can get him.
(they're still hyped up on the Snyder-induced adrenaline).

Let's go for it. This could be a great score if we land it."

...but one of them says..."yeah but what about Fassel? You know, coming into this, we all felt he was really the best fit? "

reply: Well, we got Green, he's hooked if we just set the hook within the next 24 hours. Fassel didn't kiss our butts like Green did anyway. Besides, if we take the time to talk to him again....we may lose out on Green.....and then if Fassel blows us off too, then we REALLY look like the same 'ol same 'ol retards that so many accuse us of. Screw Fassel. Grab Green. Everyone will love us for this great coup"

But what if this was just another Tango dream? Maybe Kerouac was right.....maybe they SHOULD have taken a little more time...and made doubly sure they know what every basic trainee is taught the first day they enter the service....CYA.?????

I sure hope we see some decent coaches hired...not just old "yassuh" ghosts from Valhalla past.

I sure hope Graves and Michael know what they Hell they are doing.

I sure hope this doesn't turn out to be "You Got a Winner in Town, Part II." !!!

I am definitely of the opinion that The Cards pulled a rush to judgement on selecting Green. I would have thought that a reason to pick an experienced head coach would be the experienced staff he would bring with him, i.e. Bill Parcells. That doesn't seem to be the case. Panic and public relations would appear to be prime factors in this hurried decision.

Tango,
Here's some maybe's for you.

Maybe Fassell came into town for the interview and appeared as tired and burnt out as he did on TV late in the season.
Maybe Graves and Co. realized they are not looking for a spot replacement but that they were replacing the ENTIRE staff. That meant the HC had to come in and start working hard right away to build a staff so they could get organized in tiime to hold a mini-camp to evaluate current players before looking to the draft.
Maybe Graves and Co. decided Fassell looked like a guy who needed some time off, something the Cards could not afford to give him.
Maybe Fassell told the Cards he wanted to have time to interview with multiple teams before deciding which one he wanted to coach.
So maybe they went to the guy who was all rested up, had been thinking about putting together a new staff already, and showed lots of positive attitude about taking over as HC for the Cards right away.

Who knows. Maybe we are both making wild guesses. But second guessing the team is always fun. :D

Sorry. Mac's not coming back, Tango.

I liked him too.

Time to move on. Suggest you give Dennis time to at least make the official announcements before you climb all over his choices of assistants.

The only person who's really gotten hurt in all of this is Fassell. He's still looking for a job and everyone except the Raiders and Chicago have their guy.

Thank you great post!!! Green is our coach, and itis about time we go one of his quaility.

Who did Parcells select for his staff that is so darn experienced? Maurice Carthon? How long has HE been coaching?

Tango:

Les Steckel, who actually took over from Bud Grant in 1984, went 3-13 with the squad he inherited. So much for the idea that Grant had built a turnkey playoff team.

Then, after Steckel crashed-and-burned, and Grant coached one 7-9 season on an interim basis, Jerry Burns came in and went 52-43 in his six years as an NFL head coach (and 14-18 over his last two seasons).

It was almost a decade after Grant's long run as HC ended, in 1983, before Dennis Green was hired. Grant's last good QB, Pro Bowler Tommy Kramer, never took a snap for Green. WR Anthony Carter was on the downside by 1992, and only played two seasons for Green (not leading the team in receptions or yards either year).

More to the point, only one of the six Vikings Pro Bowlers in Green's debut season of 1992 had ever played for Bud Grant. Players and rookie seasons (w/Vikes, unless otherwise noted) as follows:

Chris Doleman--1985
Randall McDaniel--1988
Audray McMillian--1985 (Houston Oilers)
Todd Scott--1991
Henry Thomas--1987
Gary Zimmerman--1986

I've spent more time on this than it probably warranted, but the suggestion that Dennis Green's success in Minnesota was "a hold-over from what Bud Grant had essentially built" is laughable.

But you have have to admit....that's a pretty nice safety net.

That is too funny.

Before the hiring...I think one of your critical points of Green was that he was only interested in a job because his "safety net" had run out.

Which is it? A good thing or a bad thing?

A good thing for Fassell but a bad thing for Green?

LMAO!

Wally...you were also Pro-Fassel. I don't think you would be saying the same thing about the situation if Fassel would have been hired. Look at the coaching records...speaks volumes. There was no panic or public relations pressure...it was a solid move and they went after the man they wanted.

If that, indeed, does turn out to be what happens....this could be Green's "Waterloo".

Hey Tango, you wrote that movie, "Conspiracy Theory," didn't you!! That was a great movie!

Moving too quickly...NOT HARDLY..More like ( A MOVE THAT WAS LONG OVERDUE)...too quickly, would have been Cardinals firing Mc Ginnis & co., After the 2002 season (3-13)& getting a better staff in here last year. So we as Fans would'nt have had to go through the horror of last year!!!! We've gotten so used to losing, that we actually second guess a proven winner, player & coach developer. DON'T BE AFRAID OF WINNING..... Dennis Green is our coach.....Move on!!!!

Incorrect sir. From being a Card fan for 40 + years, I have run thin on patience. I wanted someone to come in running. Like the Fred Flinstone intro, where Fred and Barney are running in place to get the car going. :D
