Those seats on SW have been that size for at least 15 years or more. They havent been shrunk in anyway shape or form. Lets not be melodramatic.

Yes he should buy twos eats. As should any overly obese person. Or dont fly SW.

Rare agreement by me.

Perhaps it's time for the price for airline tickets to be based on weight, like we pay to ship packages. If you pay the "400 pound fare" you get a wider seat.

It's pretty lame to bump the guy from the flight after he's already strapped himself in, but really, if you get thrown off a plane for being too fat it's definitely time to draw up a serious diet plan.

Love this concept... however, in our overly concerned Politically Correct country, this won't ever happen... sucks!

X2. I avoid SW like the plague. Their cattle call boarding process is horrid. Of the discount carriers Jet Blue is definitely the way to go.

Have you flown since they implimented the #s system? - much better than the old grouping process which could get a bit chaotic, mainly because people are people..........

now it's really no different than any other airline - instead of bording by zone with a seat #, you board by zone with a boarding # and just grab a seat

then again, SW is probably one of my favorite airlines - accomodating, don't drown in fees, good prices, FF program has easy to use rewards

I like SW and prefer to fly them whenever I fly. You can print our your boarding pass the day before and all but secure a good seat on the aircraft if you are willing to do so. The lack of fees and competitive pricing make it a favorite.

Yeah, thanks to a $25 promotional fare I flew to AZ on SW in November for the first time in quite a while. The number system is definitely an improvement, but still I don't care for the general admission system once you get on the plane. It puts the burden of seat distribution on obtaining a boarding pass as close to 24 hours in advance as possible rather than rewarding early ticket booking.

They should have just looked for an extra-skinny passenger to seat next to Smith. :D

I would'nt mind sitting next to him even with his flesh oozing out of his seat like a bag of jell-o. I'd put up with that just to ask him how he managed to make create such a great movie like Chasing Amy after doing a piece of crap like Mallrats.

I just think it's funny that a big-time director like Smith has to fly frickin' Southwest, seat or no seat.

I think he's more icon than big-time director. You'll have to point me to any of his movies that have really racked up the bank. Has he ever had any movie break the $50 million mark?

I think he's small-time and prefers it that way. He readily admits his weaknesses (doesn't know how to move a camera, prefers to cast his friends) and is only modeled by his fan boys. I doubt we'll ever have a great young director say he owes his career to Kevin Smith.

I think he's a decent writer and much more interesting just standing at the podium just talking off the cuff. One of the genuinely interesting guys in the movie business.

I'd be willing to bet he flies a lot and can't really afford to fly first class that often.

There ya go. His movies generally make money, but that only makes him important to insiders. He appeals to a niche audience.

I'd be willing to bet his gross net worth is less than $10 million.

LOL

He's still worth millions yet you're arguing that he can't afford first class... You do realize that not only is this COACH, but it's coach on SOUTHWEST??

That ain't that much. He flies between LA and NJ often, multiple times a month, not to mention all the side trips and what no. I'm sure he has to keep his flights within reason or his flight budget would have to be tens of thousands a year.

One of Kevin's appeals is he's still pretty normal and doesn't live to excess. Except for the Twinkies and chain smoking. If I were him I'd take a couple of years off. Every time he goes into post-production he gains 100 lbs.

Turns out KS was probably booted because someone else bought two seats but they didn't have two seats on the plane, and KS, who was already flying standby, was the last guy on the plane. Pilot demanded staff resolve the issue so they could take off, and KS was removed because of his stand-by status. It appears staff probably made up the fat complaint just to get a body off the plane and resolve the seating issue.

Southwest apparently never interviewed the people around him, can't produce any credible evidence than anyone ever complained. KS's story is he fit in the seat with the arms down, had his seat belt buckled without any convenience, and he even checked with both women he sat between. Said they were more interested in sleeping.

KS thinks Southwest made up this story about him being too fat because they don't want to admit to kicking someone off a plane because they can't do basic math. This actually seems pretty credible based on Southwest's changing story on their own blog, though they are still insisting KS should have bought two seats.

Seems to me if you can fit in the seat with the arms down and buckle the seat belt without an extension, you have rightfully leased that space for the time you've been promised and have a reasonable expectation to be served air travel without any undue delays. Think KS is probably right to scream on this one.

I don't care how long the seats have been tiny, but it doesn't mitigate the fact that they're frickin' SMALL. I'm carry a few pounds I shouldn't, but I am by no means even close to obese, and I barely fit in them. They're made for very small people.

I disagree that they are made for small people. They are made for 'average' people. Even at close to 400 pounds, Kevin was able to sit in his chair with both arm rests down as stated in the article. By that right there, you can't say bigger people can't fit.

No they really aren't. I am 6 feet 4 inches and weigh 265 lbs. I am in no way shape or form small. Yet I fit in a seat just fine. My biggest issue is leg room not seat size. So no they aren't just built to accommodate small people. I am larger than a large majority of the population and I have no issue. A smaller person will obviously be a tad more comfortable but they are built to seat larger people.

They aren't built for overly obese or overly tall people. Nor should they be that isnt the norm in society. If you are overly tall request an exit lane to get the legroom you need. If you are overly fat? Go on a damn diet and it wont be a problem.

Yep, flights lasting over an hour start to get brutal on the knees. They really should'nt have reclining seats if legroom is going to be restricted to such a small area. I dread when the person in front of me lays their seat back.
