Not sure both Matt Damon and Ben Affleck were "A-list" when Dogma was made, but Affleck was arguably A-list when Jersey Girl came out.

Both Affleck and Damon received an Oscar for writing "Good Will Hunting", and Damon had an oscar nomination for Best Actor under his belt, two years before they made "Dogma", ne pas?

This doesn't qualify them as A-listers?

Bruce Willis in Die Hard 4 sold a bazillion tix two summers ago. Yes, I think he's still in the creme of the A-list. He just doesn't work as much.

Affleck and Damon were his friends, with Smith playing a vital role in them getting the deal for Good Will Hunting. Meh. Otherwise A-list actors haven't been banging on the door to work with him.

Willis is a departure. This whole movie is a departure.

BTW, the only people I think ever thought Affleck was an actual A-list actor were Hollywood producers and Kevin Smith.

Don't think I've ever met a real person that thought he was an actor worth paying a ticket to see. And I think the tix sales of his movies bear that out.

Dogma was probably actually in production before or during the awards season in which he nominated for Best Actor. But no, I don't think that makes them A-Listers. It has nothing to do with awards, it has to do with money.

Mickey Rourke WON the Oscar for The Wrestler, but I don't consider him an A-Lister.

Well, since you are so adamant about being right on this, I'll step away. I don't agree with your opinion, but oh well.

Nothing personal, Chap. I usually agree with most anything you say on the industry. Just feel it's worth my time to defend someone who I think has been able to maintain a reasonable sense of humility in an industry that does everything to inspire otherwise.

*shrug*

I think we could also agree KS fans love him a little too much. He's not a great filmmaker, overrated as a writer, and is pretty lucky to have a career at all. But even KS admits that (often).

Of all the opinions on here, yours is probably the one I most rely on.

I'm not a HUGE fan of Smith, but I definitely don't dislike him. I still think he's milking this incident, but that doesn't mean he's blatantly dishonest about everything.

I think he's a better-than-average comedy writer, he's actually very good at integrating pop culture references in his work. That's why him doing a Fletch movie was such an intriguing idea. He would be one of those guys that would probably do well with a Veronica Mars movie.

I think KS just talking is hilarious. When he writes, he gives his actors mouths full of big words that don't sound natural coming out of their mouths. Not to mention he doesn't allow them actually act. He records their lines for them and has them learn it by rote.

The college speaking tour is by far my favorite thing KS has ever done. I also think Chasing Amy was his best movie and Mallrats is underrated (although the commentary on the DVD is legendary and actually funnier than the movie).

I also think Chasing Amy is his best movie. By a large margin, actually. My #2 is Dogma and I didn't like Clerks. Haven't seen Mallrats yet, but that's one of my few hundred DVDs I haven't seen yet.

Yep, well said, Kevin Smith. They didn't throw him off the plane for being KS. They probably didn't even know who the heck he was. They screwed up the numbers and were looking for an excuse to throw someone off. They saw KS--a fat man who fit into his seat, but a fat man nonetheless--and chucked him.
