It’s always risky to let a solid frontline player walk, but the Cards did just that with Antonio Smith. No one was going to confuse him for a Pro Bowl player, but he came to play every week and didn’t mind doing the heavy lifting. The Cards simply felt Calais Campbell was playing at a level close to Smith and that Campbell had more upside. Of course, Campbell figured to be a great deal more cap friendly as a bonus.

Watson seems all but certain to re-sign with the team. Injuries to Watson left the center of the line a revolving door and the Cards remain hopeful that he will enjoy a healthy season. They are also hopeful he can shift up a gear and become more of a true anchor. Branch had an underwhelming year, only occasionally looking like he belonged in this league. Dockett had another quality year, but with few real pass rush threats in the front seven, he was rarely able to be the impact player the Cards are needing to see. He did command a few double-teams that benefitted other players, but the Cards never took full advantage of what he brings to the field.

The other backups were mostly mundane. Iwebema and Robinson made plays here and there, but neither player was a major factor in victories.

The Cards would love to add an impact pass rusher, either at DE or OLB. As I’ve noted elsewhere, this move figures likely to happen in round one or two. Of course, a trade also remains an option, but that won’t happen until draft day if at all. I wouldn’t be surprised to see them pick up another tackle even if Watson returns. There are some interesting players late in the draft and a couple of free agents who should be on the market may also be considered.
At the moment this unit would likely be classed as adequate, but a major leap forward is surely on the agenda for this season or next.

You Can't Keep Everybody...

Antonio Smith was unsung. There were at least 2 game-outcomes he played a big part in our winning.

But - considering cap limitations and roster priorities (i.e. Boldin, Dansby, Dockett, Wilson etc.) - something had to give.

If not Antonio, who?

I realize that it's easy to compare two players head-up to determine which should go or stay, but there's also depth at each position/role to be considered.

In absolute terms, we may rather have kept Smitty than, say, Alan Branch; but we need 2 (or even 3) player depth at a very physical position like NT whereas, we may feel that Campbell and Iwebema give us enough depth at DE.

There's also the issue of "fit" as we edge closer toward the 3-4. Smitty is a bit light to play outside in a 3-4 while at the same time, he's unlikely to be Mr. Agility as a LB in coverage.

I hate to lose Smitty and our inability to keep him adds a degree of risk to the equation, but "welcome to the new NFL" - considering all factors - I think it was still the best percentage move available to us.

byebyebranch, hello CC!

If CC refers to Calais Campbell, then his role is irrelevant to Branch's future with the team.

There are more than a few on this board who should review the Dolphins tape, before Branch got dinged, and the final game against Seattle.

This is a guy who came out of College early and has had a few nagging injuries. Some of the criticism is fair, but, when placed in context one can understand why the team continues to have hope for him at NT.

I think Branch is out of position. Wonder if the team has tried him at DE? At this point, i'd move him out there see if he can contribute there, if not ship him out next offseason.

330 lb DE... ?

No doubt he could stand up against the run, but, as said... if one does a close review of his better efforts you can imagine him as a solid duo with Watson at the 3-4 nose tackle.

But he's also 6-5. Too easy for the G's and C's to get lower than him. I just don't ever see him doing anything at the NFL level as a NT.

Well, there may be issues with leverage and hand placement, but height is hardly the issue. At 6-5, he's all of two inches taller than Watson. Our o-line, and I offer it as typical, averages 6-4, and a touch. So, no easy advantage for them, or others, in blocking.

Gandy 6-4
Wells 6-4
Sendlein 6-4
Lutui 6-4
L. Brown 6-5

E. Brown 6-5
Keith 6-5
Vallejo 6-7

Branch has always had talent, but it's a little late to assume he still needs to want it more and show more maturity. It's the intangilbles that make him a weak performer.
