It’s always risky to let a solid frontline player walk, but the Cards did just that with Antonio Smith. No one was going to confuse him for a Pro Bowl player, but he came to play every week and didn’t mind doing the heavy lifting. The Cards simply felt Calais Campbell was playing at a level close to Smith and that Campbell had more upside. Of course, Campbell figured to be a great deal more cap friendly as a bonus.
Watson seems all but certain to re-sign with the team. Injuries to Watson left the center of the line a revolving door and the Cards remain hopeful that he will enjoy a healthy season. They are also hopeful he can shift up a gear and become more of a true anchor. Branch had an underwhelming year, only occasionally looking like he belonged in this league. Dockett had another quality year, but with few real pass rush threats in the front seven, he was rarely able to be the impact player the Cards are needing to see. He did command a few double-teams that benefitted other players, but the Cards never took full advantage of what he brings to the field.
The other backups were mostly mundane. Iwebema and Robinson made plays here and there, but neither player was a major factor in victories.
The Cards would love to add an impact pass rusher, either at DE or OLB. As I’ve noted elsewhere, this move figures likely to happen in round one or two. Of course, a trade also remains an option, but that won’t happen until draft day if at all. I wouldn’t be surprised to see them pick up another tackle even if Watson returns. There are some interesting players late in the draft and a couple of free agents who should be on the market may also be considered.
At the moment this unit would likely be classed as adequate, but a major leap forward is surely on the agenda for this season or next.
