It is from PFT, but I cannot completely denounce the rumor yet either. Both Urban and Sommers couldnt denounce it in their blogs today leading me to believe there may be some credance to the rumors if both think they could be true without looking into them yet. Along with who their agents are and past comments from Dockett.

I am cautiously skeptical on the rumor until we here more from Sommers or Urban.

What has Smith done to earn a new contract? Seriously?

Dockett picked a wrong year to complain about a new contract. Did he forget what we had to do, just to get Fitz restructured?

Dansby
Boldin
Wilson
Dockett

In that order.

I agree. Somers blog title was actually called "Line forms at the back", refering mostly to Dockett. "If Dockett and his agent, Drew Rosenhaus, want a new deal, the Cardinals likely will tell them to take a number and wait in a very long line. Karlos Dansby, Anquan Boldin, Adrian Wilson and others are ahead of him."

Also Sommers just reported in his Blog that he got a hold of Smith and Smith was on his way to signing his tender offer today. Smith did say that they did talk about a long term deal before he was going to sign his offer but that it didnt get to far, and he still wants to sign a long term deal during the season.

so semi-unsubstantiated rumor.

MESA! :thud:
He's a free agent. He's getting a new contract.
I think dcr meant as opposed to being traded? Not sure. The original article didn't say that Smith wanted to work a new deal; it said he wanted to be traded.

:yeahthat:

I don't think that there are many other DE lines in football that he could be traded to, and actually start.

Isn't he an Restricted Free-Agent, tied to the cards unless another team gives up a 1st round pick for him?

Did we really place the 1st round pick tender for him?

Yep, slightly over 2 Mill. We could have given him the 2nd round tender offer and gotten away with it IMO but that was at a time they were not sure they could work out a new Fitz deal so Possibly losing a starter when you didnt have money to replace him wasnt worth 400K in savings. So I can see why the decided on it in a way.

Difference of 400k makes sense. Smith wanting to be traded when he is actually starting perplexes me.

Again, which is why I find it so surprising that he MIGHT BE complaining.

IMO, he benefitted from greatly increased performance from Dockett, Gabe Watson, Dansby, and a surprisingly effective Calvin Pace.

Even still, he only put up 5.5 sacks, and we still finished in the bottom half of the league for total yards given up.

What more does he think he'll get elsewhere?

When you see a guy like Pace go and get 20 Mill in gauranteed money for one 6.5 sack season, I can see why some players and agents think they can get more as well.

While being 17th in the league in total defense isn't anything to write home about, this seems like an overgeneralization. An that can't be totally blamed on Antonio Smith, since there were 10 other players on that defense with him. I think it also helps Smith's case that the Cards were the 9th-best rushing defense in the NFL.

Yea, but top ten against the rush didn't help my case any, so I went the other route.... Lies, dang lies, and statistics.

:p

I'm just glad that PFT has once again proven to be an unreliable source.

Go Cards!!!

still doesn't answer my question.

He would like a multi-year deal instead of a one-year deal. That's what I think was behind him being in this rumor. Regardless, he's getting a new contract.

Kent Somers, of The Arizona Republic, reports Arizona Cardinals DL Antonio D. Smith plans to sign his one-year tender offer Thursday, April 3. Smith was talking to the Cardinals about the possibility of signing a multi-year deal, but negotiations failed. He will play 2008 for the tender of $2.018 million. Smith will become an unrestricted free agent in 2009, unless there is a new contract agreement during the 2008 season.

meet the 2009 Calvin Pace.....though he would be even easier to replace....Branch better justify 2 burnt picks on him
