I wasn't at the game, but I can imagine the LA fans after they took the 3-0 lead.
When Andruw came up, the one's around my area were basically praying..then he walked, and they went back to their a-hole ways...I thought for sure Kemp was going to kill us.

I would normally say to my wife after the D-backs leave the bases loaded in an early inning that it would come back to haunt them. This time I added that Haren would not let that happen. He didn't. Pena made me nervous. Lyon just couldn't resist the D-back tradition of making things closer than they ever should be. When Andruw was sent up to pinch-hit, I was thinking Torre lost his mind after turning 68 yesterday. And Lyon gave him a free pass! I thought Kemp would lace one off the wall, it's just the kind of crap ya expect from lately. Thankfully, he just flied OUT and the D-backs took over first place again. If Haren (9 runs allowed in his last 9 starts!) was going to be denied his win, I'd have been beside myself. Webb gets another Sunday start and hopefully keeps the D-backs in first place!

That was quite a catch by Jackson and O-Dog's late snare off Ethier was huge. No D-backs errors and what do ya know, they won. :D

Dodger fans are as annoying as Cowboy fans. (sang to Randy Newman's song) I hate LA, I HATE IT!

Maybe this team needs to look for a closer? When Cruz gets back, I would like to see him and Lyon share the closer role.

So Lyon struggles once, after a what, 13 game streak of absolute dominance, you want to mess with this? And then have someone that has NEVER closed share the role??

NOT wise.

No, you definitely do not mess with the closer spot when Lyon has done just fine.. Cruz should get a chance to take over Pena or Qualls spot, even though he's just as inconsistent. Either way, we need to look for another reliever before the trade deadline because even when we have our top 3 pitching well, we still lack quality relievers for the middle innings. Unfortunately, it's rare to have our top 4 pitching like they should at the same time.

Webb takes the mound in exactly two hours from now. Play ball.

Even though I advocated someone other than Brandon Lyon as closer at the beginning of the season (because he is not a power pitcher), I agree with letting it be as long as he performs well.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I have followed Major League baseball for a long time and watched the relief staffs evolve. Jim Konstantly with the Phillies in the late '40's, Clem Labine, Hoyt Wilhelm and Joe Black in the early '50's even before they were called Closers.

In fact, the Dodgers starting staffs were so shallow, that closer Clem Labine started, and pitched a complete game shutout, in Game 2 of the famous playoffs of 1951. And closer Joe Black was the starting pitcher in Games 1-4-7 of the '52 World Series vs. the Yankees.

Then we went to a set-up man and closer. Now to 7th, 8th and 9th inning specialists.

With MLB so much more streamlined than it was sixty years ago, I can't understand why it's expected that starting pitchers will go six innings, then give way to the bullpen.

I wonder if it's pressure from the Players' Union to create more jobs.

Ok - 4-1, heading into bottom of 8th. If that score holds up, do you let Webby finish out? He has thrown 109 pitches. He has allowed two base runners in each of the last two innings.

If we lose this game, this will be the last day we are in first this season. This loss will rip the heart out of the club.
