All this talk about Boldin made me realize that I have never heard any dollar amount mentioned as to what it would take to make Q a happy camper.

What if we extended him 1 year with a 5m roster bonus this year( in additin to his 2.5 mil due this year), a roster bonus of 6 mil next year (in addition to his 2.5 mil due) and a 3rd year of 8 mil ?

That would be a one year extension with 19 mil in new money?

IMO, this seems to be the best scenario.
A. Q gets the money he wants this year guaranteed.
B. If the Cards want to cut him he would be a free agent or if they wanted to trade him next year he would have a contract in place that would be somewhat friendly to any interested parties.

This kind of offer would pay him around 8 m a year without totally strapping our cap.

Am I nuts or is this a fair deal. Maybe the better question is would this be enough to make Boldin happy?

One thing is for sure, nothing is going to happen until Saturday. If Q is traded we will go one way. If he stays, this situation will need to be addressed. It can't stay status quo.

Probably in the range of $7M-$9M per year...Cards will probably 'low ball' him and offer a 4 year $30M contract, with $25M guaranteed...Thats pure speculation obviously, but it would be a nice upgrade to his current contract, and that's what he should take.

Based on what Q says, there is no amount of money from the Cards that will make him happy. He feels he's been disrespected and lied to one too many times.

That was months ago. In radio interviews he has done a complete 180 on the situation concerning his stance that he would never sign an extension with AZ. He is willing to sign an extension if one he deemed correct came his way. Direct quote - "Signing an extension or being traded doesn't matter which route is taken, he just wants a resolution"

4 years 30 mill with 25 of it being guaranteed? That is about as close as you would get to a pure guaranteed contract like baseball and basketball. Not a chance we guarantee 83.33% of his contract. Thats not a low ball contract at all.

Man, I haven't posted in so long! How did the Cards do this year? Can't wait to watch the Suns in the play-offs!

Seriously though, I think he needs to be compensated with the same numbers as Fitz or he'll always feel like he's playing second fiddle. Think about it: up until about two years ago he was our savior, now he's not. That has to be hard to swallow.

That's good to know.

If AZ is going to give him an additional 11 million for the two years we already have him under contract it will be to lock him up for much longer than one additional year.

The uncapped year might not be a problem, but can the Cardinals even offer something like that and stay under future caps?

I was thinking the same thing when i wrote it. I was initially gonna say $20M guaranteed, but i doubt Boldin would take that. Not sure the Cards would want to offer him a huge guarantee since he has injury problems, so that could be a liability. I was just trying to imagine what kind of contract Q would accept, and what would be good for the team. I'm obviously not a GM lol, so i have no idea what kind of offer Graves would propose.

What would make Boldin happy? Mary Poppins sang us the answer years ago:

A spoonful of sugar makes the medicine go down
makes the medicine go down...

If Whis continues to work his magic, the Cardinals will continue to draft very low in the first round. Just shaving all those astronomical contracts that top ten draft choices get would(will) do wonders for the Cardinals. The Colts have had that advantage for years and have been just as competitive year in and year out as New England. Of course they don't usually spend nearly the coin on their defense (outside of Bob Sanders) that the Cardinals are fixin' to drop on Dansby and A-Dub.

What if the Cards took a different approach with this and gave this offer:

Take a $2mil paycut for this year, then he can be a free agent next year. Otherwise, he's on the hook for the next two years under his current deal.

Completely far fetched, and probably not even allowed to redo a contract with less years.

  1. The Patriots would be a etter franchise to pattern ourselves after.
  2. Still concerned about escalating contracts (suchas as Leinart if the Cards decide to keep him) and I'm also thinking the Cardinals will have to re-sign othe key players for more than they are getting now(?).
EDIT: Ok, so maybe the Cardinals are ok on that second part for a few more years.
