I heard somewhere where if the new deal went through Kobe (Who would make $25 million this year) would only make $13 million. Thats why there's some people saying there might be a season or two lost. The players signed deals, and the owners want to reduce their pay.

Per an article from Brian Mahoney, AP Basketball Writer in USA Today, negotiators for NBA players and owners met Tuesday with talks to resume on Wednesday to see if talks can go forward.

Smiling widely but even resorting to a memorable NBA cliche to avoid specifics, David Stern provided little insight into the direction of the league's labor situation.

That, he hinted, could come Wednesday.

Negotiators for the NBA and its players met for only about two hours Tuesday and plan to resume the talks early Wednesday. Stern said that meeting will determine how soon it's worth sitting down again.

And if it's not later this week, more cancellations are likely next week.

It's been expected there would be no talks Thursday because members of both bargaining teams will be observing the Jewish holiday, but they could resume before the weekend if progress is being made.

Enough of my feigned period of disinterest in the NBA. I need it, I want it, even if things are not all bright with the Suns.

If a handshake agreement is not in place by the end of the weekend by owners and players, Stern might cancel the season and I'm not sure he is bluffing.

complete posturing BS. They didn't strike a deal until Jan. 6 last time and started the season Feb. 6.

it's a complete bluff.

and to be honest, i could care less. i hope they cancel the season cause i don't want to see Steve Nash play on an awful team.

In all honesty, isn't it an awful team whenever Steve wears down?

As he ages, he's part of the problem more than part of the solution.

Every athlete gets old. But this is historically an offensive team with the offense built around a 178 lb. 37 1/2 year old. It ain't gonna get any better.

As I view it there is one huge obstacle to Stern canceling the season. Since the players are not on strike and the owners have locked them out, I think the owners would have to pay the players and facilities under contract. That's a lot of money going out and none coming in.

As far as I understand it, the players would not be entitled to pay under a lockout, because the contract between the NBPA and the NBA has expired and no new contract has been agreed upon. So the players would not get paid, although all the other employees including coaching staffs and referees would. If the players were not at risk of losing money, then they would have little incentive to reach an agreement before the season is cancelled.

You are probably right as the players were told to save for this situation so there must be some language which prevails. However, it would seem logical that an individual player's contract should be valid if he is not on strike and the owner's lock him out. I guess the union contract with the owners may prevail over the individual contract... or we will find out in court.

As far as stern goes, who knows. the guy usually means what he says so you have to take him for face value. that's not to say that a deal can't get done later to salvage the season. I would expect to see the season cancelled entirely. My feeling is we will not see basketball this year at all. I think the owners are serious about change. Then the players? they don't appear ready to play and neither side seems willing to change anything. the players have too much control in the NBA and it bogs down the league as a whole, but I don't know if the culture can be changed now. it is a players sport and they control a lot. i don't think they will be willing to give in until they lose a lot and it sinks in that they have to give it up if they desire to get paid and play.

As far as nash? I don't think he is done. that's not to say that he will ever be a league mvp again because I think those days are likely over. However, with a right team around him I think he can still play at a all star level. If jason kidd can do it, I think nash can bring more to the table offensively for a club that has talent around him. I would love to see nash join the mavs or another team that is bound for a title. i think he would thrive again at a high level. but you won't see him carry a team on his back like he used to.

it is just unfortunate to see this happen this year. last year's nba season was a great one. there seemed to be a lot of competiveness in the league compared to recent years. I just think that the owners are tired of some of the bs contracts that cripple a franchise and posturing by the players(like you saw with boston/minn trade, dwade lbj chris bosh, etc, etc.) thankfully dallas has a savy owner who is all about winning and not ONLY about cash.

What will be worse...having a season, or watching the vultures pick apart the corpses of our once budding juggernaut?

Huh. You liked last season? I never would have guessed.
I hated the outcome....lol j/k

but it was good to see teams like the lakers, celtics, heat, all go down to a team that was not expected to win it all. the sterns lost too. either way you look at it, there were a lot of good teams last year that were all in contention. some years in the NBA there are only 2 or 3 teams that are really legit for winning a title. and that makes it boring in the playoffs.

I just don't think I could have taken a Lakers versus the Heat series. I'm particularly happy the Heat didn't win it. Cuban paid top dollar to put together a championship team but that always doesn't work so kudos to the Mavericks.

The players absolutely do not get paid if there is a lockout. I'm sure it's a standard part of any contract. That is the only reason that the owners would have to lock them out. There would be more than a handful of players who would be happy to not play as long as they were getting paid.

Mavericks get to be defending champs for two years without playing a single game. After this weekend, I think Stern will pull the plug.

Actually, I kinda hope they do miss a season. I think the NBA will emerge much stronger if all parties suffer for a while and then reach a fair compromise, instead of one side caving to save the season.

A canceled season favors teams who are just waiting for calendar pages to flip over, and the Suns are unquestionably in that group, so from a narrow perspective, it wouldn't be so bad. In fact, I wonder if Sarver is smart enough to realize that, and that's part of the reason he's being such a hardliner.

my question is this... if there's no season, does that mean players on contract have those years count toward their deals? basically, if there's no season, then next year, does Nash become a FA or does he still have one year left on his deal like he has now?

Good question cheese. I wonder how the contracts are worded ie;

"The player agrees to terms for the years 2002-2008" Strike year would count.

or

"The player agrees to 5 year terms beginning in the 2002 season." Strike year wouldn't count cuz the league year never happened?

I agree the wording is key. It is interesting to note the players are not on "strike." My thoughts, if I were the players, I would not decertify the union and take the owners to court. The owners have locked them out and they are entitled to their salary.
