my question is this... if there's no season, does that mean players on contract have those years count toward their deals? basically, if there's no season, then next year, does Nash become a FA or does he still have one year left on his deal like he has now?
Good question cheese. I wonder how the contracts are worded ie;

"The player agrees to terms for the years 2002-2008" Strike year would count.

or

"The player agrees to 5 year terms beginning in the 2002 season." Strike year wouldn't count cuz the league year never happened?
I agree the wording is key. It is interesting to note the players are not on "strike." My thoughts, if I were the players, I would not decertify the union and take the owners to court. The owners have locked them out and they are entitled to their salary.

I think the key is that every player contract has been negotiated and signed under the terms of the current CBA which has already expired. I believe that without a valid CBA between the players union and the NBA these existing contracts are essentially voided until a new CBA is negotiated. This is why there was speculation that the owners might want to scale the existing contracts back as part of the new CBA, although that won't happen. This is also why the NBA would be able to permanently void all the player contracts should the union decertify.

To answer the original question, I think the wording itself is not that important, because the players and owners can agree on how to resolve this issue as part on the next CBA when it is eventually reached. My guess is that all contracts would end when they were originally scheduled to end.

that was such an idiotic move. Had they gone after Amare they would have had the needed one-two punch offensively they needed and Boozer'd D is just as awful as Amare's so they'd lose nothing there.

seriously...

Rose
whoever
Deng
Amare
Noah

That team would demolish people. Noah's the perfect compliment to Amare and that entire team is athletic and would get after it. Boozer... ugh. dude chokes harder in the playoffs than a pornstar in a four on one gang-bang.

Apparently Wade and Stern got into a shouting match at the negotiations today. Stern pointed in wades face and things got heated!

Stern: "Lebron choked it, I stacked the deck for you"

I really believe if Chicago or Miami got Amare, one of the two would have won the championship.

I don't. amare is nothing more than a hybrid version of boozer. a choker who scores more points. I'd like to see amare and boozer battle it out in a game of horse.

LOL. joking, amare is a stud but I don't care much for amare's attitude.

good for wade. If I were stern I would say shut up young man. If I cancel your season the last memory of your career will be walking off your home court with your head down. at least for another year.

I'm not sure of the context of this quote but it sounds like tampering taken alone.

Which is why the quote is surely bogus. Even if Stern did rig things somehow, he'd never be so stupid as to admit it in a huge meeting.

True, but even Stern is not immune to saying something stupid especially if he lost his temper which may have happened.

"Once again, Phoenix Suns owners Robert Sarver was the most vocal proponent of the owner’s case, and he befuddled players by insisting that his wife had asked him to bring back the middle level exception in a designer bag. He’s been a strong advocate for a hard salary cap, and a source said that Sarver told the players in the room that he hadn’t been able to get the return on buying the Suns that he had hoped."

WTF IS WRONG WITH THIS IDIOT?!

Even in a stale economy Sarver could reap a healthy profit by selling the Suns to some billionaire who is more consumed with the Suns as an entertainment product than a money making venture.

I think the kind of mindset you're talking about rarely occurs amongst billionaires. IMO, there are a lot more Robert Sarvers than there are Mark Cubans. I have no problem with Sarver wanting his team to be profitable in the long run and I truly believe he understands that he needs a viable on-court product for that to happen. I just wish he were better at recognizing how to be both competitive and profitable.

It would be absolutely foolish for the NBA to stake its future on having billionaire owners like Mark Cuban being willing to lose boatloads of money for the sake of the game. Those billionaires did not get to be billionaires by making those kinds of purchases. Its a bad business model that is doomed to fail.

No, I do not expect a season, and surprisingly, I don't really care that much. I have been such a die hard Suns fan all my life, and I feel almost liberated. It just doesn't bother me. I will find other ways to spend my time and money.

Whether it be millionaires or billionaires, I would like the Suns to have an owner who seeks winning an NBA Championship as their primary focus. An owner that will forgo short term profits for long term success like JC did with the Diamondbacks and Cuban did with the Mavericks... when they see a window of opportunity to win it all. Those windows of opportunity are not always there.

And this is where I disagree with most of the posters here. I believe we have an owner that does just that. He's shown (IMO) the willingness to forego short term profits for long term success. It's just that he hasn't done it well; in fact, he's done it rather poorly. But, his mistakes haven't just been in pursuit of the almighty dollar as many here insist. He's wasted more than a few bucks on some pretty bad decisions.

Feel the same way. I'm not going to bandwaggon and switch to another team. but i'm not going to miss it either. Many of us are struggling to make ends meet while we have the NBA arguing over huge amounts of money among other issues.

Even if there was a season, the suns are still on the edge of making the playoffs with their roster. Things are only going to get worse when NASH is gone as we try to rebuild a complete system thats been in place forever. With sarvers reputation, it will be interesting to see what kind of team they could assemble.

There will be shortened season. Maybe it's wishful thinking.

If thats the plan then i could care less if the Suns ever take the court again....not kidding.
