We are going to let this guy walk and I am not sure that we will have 3 guys ready for everyday play next year. I think we need to lock him up for 3 more years.

I'd give it to him. We are loaded with prospects, but as you said they are not all ready. Byrnes has been playing very well so I think it would be smart to resign him for a few more years until we're really ready to have all the young guys out there. Having a little experience on the team is a smart thing.

I don't know how this could be done, but with a history of 2nd half swoons, and a new contract under his belt, Management would have to feel assured that the man who somersaults when throwing home, and picks up half the infield dirt on his uniform, would continue to produce at this pace.

I think so, he's not as great in the second half, but has been our best offensive player the last two seasons now. Not to mention he is a fan favorite and a great role model for the younger players. We can't run a team out there with all rookies/2nd/3rd year players. We need some veteran leadership from an offensive standpoint!

Give him an extension then trade him when you feel our young guys are ready. He's got a lot of value right now - no need to let him walk for nothing.

I voted no, I do think he DESERVES an extension, I just don't think the Dbacks are in place to give one. Perhaps if they could sign him to a 1 or 2 year deal (and then trading him if need be) would be the way to go. 3 years seems a bit much to me.

I was thinking about the same topic - the man is a big part of the success so far, and we need a few vets like him around.

Sure, if the price is right, lock him up at a reasonable rate.

Nope, trade him when his value is at its peak.

The team is loaded with OF prospects, just plain loaded. With Upton and Gonzalez only a couple years away, there is likely to be quite the logjam in the OF. Signing Byrnes to a multi-year deal will only contribute to that, and then you could end up with the problem of the veteran blocking the young guy like the team had the last couple of years.

I like Byrnes, but he's not a star and not the future.

"Logjam"?? LMAO... Upton and Gonzalez haven't done a thing yet... They still have much to prove. As do Young and Quentin...
Bottom line, Byrnes provides offense! Which this team is in dire need of. Lock him up for another 3 years, now!

I voted yes. He's probably our only fan favorite right now and for good reason. He's got heart, plus his power numbers are up.

Byrnes will be hard to replace, but the player that will be even harder to replace is O-Dog. If they don't give him an extension, something is really amiss.

Especially since I don't know of any top 2B prospects in the minors. Now if the plan is to put Upton back at SS and move Drew to 2B then that's one thing, but that can't be the plan.

Then what do you do with Chris Young? Upton would have to go to LF

Which is the exact reason why Byrnes shouldn't be resigned. Young stays, Upton stays, and someone of Quentin or Gonzalez or someone else will probably be enough for RF.

I agree. Hudson was interviewed on KTAR today and he said he wants to work out a long term deal and stay here. But... he doesn't think the team wants him back!

I was surprised to see no talk of this on this board.

Wow, if they don't resign him I'll be pissed. He's a good vet to have on the team to mentor young guys, best defensive infielder, nice bat. It would be very stupid not to keep him around.

I put yes, but that hinges on how long of a deal Byrnes is looking for. If he's willing to settle for a 2 or 3 year deal, with an option for a fourth, then by all means Arizona should re-sign him. Three should give them ample time to allow the further growth of Gonzalez and Upton, and Byrnes' ability to play all three OF positions would make him the perfect mentor for this young OF over the next couple of seasons. I also take in to account his fan favorite status, and think that a 3 year deal would be fair and beneficial for both sides.

Anything longer than that, I thank him for his service and let him walk at the end of the year.

Personally, I would shop Byrnes while he's hot.

Would it be a sign of giving up on 2007? Probably. But I'm getting close to waving the white flag and going even younger. I just don't see the offense suddenly coming to life, I don't think we're just one player away, and I don't see us being a big buyer at the trading deadline anyway.

Go Proving Me Wrong. :)

Byrnes is the heart of this team. If they dump him they'll be like Bart Simpson after he sold his soul.

Did everybody see Byrnes with his dog in the kayak? That guy is awesome.

I'm in the camp of trading him now while his redeemable true value is at its peak. Otherwise, they won't receive anything of worth whatsoever by waiting around.

I personally believe they must promote CarGO (place him in LF), keep Young in RF, perhaps platoon Salazar/Hairston in RF until if/when Quentin is capable of becoming a 'legit ML hitter.

People wonder who would replace Hudson at 2B if he is dealt. I still hope that it is Upton because to me he's better suited at either of the middle IF spots. No one is close at 2B. Reynolds doesn't have the range for that position and [SIZE=-1]Emilio Bonifacio is still several years away.

I've said this several times, you need as many elite calibre players at each and every position for the most part, so it's a win-win situation to have the OF consisting of CarGO, Young, and Quentin (when again ready) with the IF consisting of 1B (CoJack?), 2B Upton, SS Drew, 3B (Reynolds?). Then perhaps Alex Romero can be given a chance to be a reserve OF (he can play all OF positions) and perhaps D'Antona can be a super-sub in the IF.

Also, I don't think Byrnes would accept a mere 1-year deal. He wants to find a long-term home now while he's w/in his prime and this is the best time to trade him or else the Dbacks are risking getting nothing in return whatsoever.
