Doucet will likely get cut, IMO.

Last night, it was Lance Long playing as the #4 WR. And he even got looks as the #3, on the field at the same time as Boldin and Fitz. With the top four set in stone it sure seems like Doucet is the one who will hit waivers. Which is too bad, because I think he can play in the NFL.

It's really great to have so much talent on this team that we will release a few guys who can actually play. It used to be when we cut players 90% of them would drop off the face of the earth after that.

I think it's a bit Early for that talk.

:D

I think you may be right and I completely agree, Doucet is good enough to play in the NFL, he's just stuck here because he can't break the top 4 and the other guys seem to be more versatile than he is with special teams.

I'm not sure that Long will beat out Doucet. I was surprised to see Doucet play as much yesterday since he had been out with the shoulder injury. That is why Long was ahead of him on the depth chart for yesterdays game. I think it's going to be a tough decision on final cuts at wr.

I think your ready to much into things.

1. Doucet only started practicing this week.
2. You cant just put in any guy in a 3 wide set. You need different skill sets depending on the patterns being called. Having Fitz, Boldin, and Doucet in the same package wont work all the time, because they are all bigger type WR's who have the same type of skill sets, running the same routes. You need some diversity, Hence Breaston being the #3 and why Long was taking the spot of Breaston in those packages because they have similar skill sets. You need diversity. If Breaston played you would not have seen Long in an of those packages.

Yeah, that.

Doucet sticks, IMO.

I think Doucet sticks and the team tries to sneak Long onto the Practice Squad. It is getting to where AZ will have to keep Stphens-Howling on the team, but can't afford to lose Wright's pass blocking, so a spot needs to be squeezed out somewhere. My guess is 5 WRs, not 6.

Doucet, if he's able to play next week, and plays well, he'd have trade value, while Long wouldn't. Either one would be picked off the WW. With six WR's, the fifth one will be inactive every week, with Morey playing Special Teams, and also able to fill in as the fifth receiver. Based on last night, I'm guessing four RB's and one FB. So, like last year, we'll go with six WR's and five RB's (including FB's). JMO.

Wow, you think the MVP of the NCAA Nat'l Championship team that featured 3 top 10 picks has more potential than the scrawny kid who couldn't even start in college without help from other players' injuries? Bold call there bud.

I think this guy I saw on a strongman competition on espn 12 last night could likely beat me in an arm wrestling contest.

If we keep only five WR on the roster, I think Doucet is the odd man out. If we keep six, then I think he sticks. It's too bad that he got hut and lost ground in the competition. BTW, I'm not basing this only on the game. Long did extremely well in the training camp practices I saw.

Another possiblity for Doucet making the sqaud is if we cut either Wright or LSH. I don't think that's likely, but it could happen. Wright was a captain last night, BTW.

I just really don't see it unless he gets injured again this preseason.

I was suprised he played as much as he did yesterday and I was very impressed by him getting up after that hit he took and getting back in the next play.

Urban keeps saying the play he got injured on in camp was the best he had seen in TC. You do realize we have Fitz and Q on this team. Thats saying something.

I think ultimately he is better the Urban (let alone Long) and just has had some unfortunate luck with injuries. As long as he stays off the injured list he will be a player on this team.

Joe is right (as usual) your looking way too much into the PT last night.

Personally I keep Doucet over everyones next great white hope in Lance Long 10 times out of 10. He has caught everything in sight this offseason but I'd like to see him get open against a teams #1 or #2 corners. I don't think it would happen.

If he stays healthy I think Doucet is good enough to be fighting Breaston for PT come next year. Thats just my opinion though.

if we cut Doucet to keep Long it's a big mistake!!! from everything I've heard coming out of camp up until his injury, #80 has had a very good camp. Don't see it happening

I like Lance Long -- but I just dont think he is an NFL player.

If he could return, or play gunner on punts, etc -- maybe

one play in the Pitt game indicated to me he isnt NFL caliber: 3rd and 6 at the 10 or so. Lance takes a crossing route short of the sticks. He has neither the speed to turn the corner, nor the size to muscle the db for the last half yard needed for a first down. As a result, he is stopped short.

But if it comes down to Doucet or Long, I know who I would keep.

I don't think Doucet will get cut for the sake of keeping long.

It IS the preseason after all. Yet, the coaches will make the final decision and I have been wrong before.

I also think that Doucet has the tools necessary to stick. Having said that however, I believe that he will have to turn up the heat in the next two weeks, as he is running out of time to show what he can do. He has lived, ( so far ), on speculation and potential, which hasn't really been exhibited. I believe that right here and right now is the time that he needs to show the staff that he can turn those comodities into action rather than potential. I believe that any inability to do so will cost him a roster spot with this team.

I have to agree. Lance just doesn't have the dimensions to be an NFL WR.

I just don't think he is Long for the NFL.

I'd rather see Onrea Jones stick.

Lance Long is 5'11" 186 lbs

These WR's might disagree with you:

Steve Largent 5'11" 187
Wes Welker 5'9" 185
Deion Branch 5'9" 190
Steve Smith 5'9" 185
Lee Evans 5'10" 195
Joey Galloway 5'11" 195
Marvin Harrison 6'0 185
Desean Jackson 5'10' 175

There are many many more. Plenty of pro bowls and HOF careers from the small guys in that list. So I dont buy it when you guys talk about his size. All the guy does is make plays.

If Lance Long is 5'11" I'm 6'5".

But just mentioning that spare in the same post as the guys above indicates its been really hot in Vegas this Summer.

He has great hands but I'm not sure he "makes plays"....the 3rd and a yard short mentioned upthread is just another indication.

I do love his hands though. Just not at the cost of a stud like Early.

Locks: Fitzgerald, Boldin, Breaston,

95% certain, clall them locks if you like: Urban, Morey (you don't cut a pro-bowler) Both of these guys; and Breaston if necessary; contribute more on special teams than any of the other WR's, this factor can't be overlooked.

That's five!

Bubble: Doucet and Long, One will stick, either one would probably not clear waivers if the Cards attempted to put them on the PS, but they have little option but to attempt it. I love what Lance Long brings to the game, but I believe that Doucet has more upside. Doucet make the team and Long will probably be playing in Kansas City.

Cut: Gant and Jones - Jones has played pretty well also.

IR/injury settlement: Garvin. They found their KR in Howlings. Not only can he return kicks but he can also contribute on offense; much more so than Garvin whom being a WR wouldn't see the field other than KR's.
