Instructional league excerpt regarding Daniel Schlereth from Nick Piecoro:

"*In LHP Daniel Schlereth’s inning of work, he sort of looked a bit like a left-handed Juan Cruz. A bit wild, pitched himself into some trouble, but nasty enough stuff that he pitched his way out of it. His curveball is filthy. They say he could use some refinement in his fastball command."

I briefly thought about terrorizing you all by starting a thread entitled "Dbacks sign Korean Kim."

In news first reported (in English, that is) by the East Windup Chronicle, the Diamondbacks have come to terms with South Korean high school catcher Jae Yun Kim.

The Diamondbacks consider Kim, who turned 18 on Sept. 16, a plus defensive catcher with a good throwing arm. They like his frame (6-1, 190) and believe he has a chance to be a solid hitter.

Kim hasn’t actually signed a deal yet, only a letter of agreement, and though the report says he is getting a $150,000 bonus, we’re hearing the Diamondbacks actually spent about $210,000.

The money amounts to what a fourth- or fifth-rounder would get in the draft. The Diamondbacks think that if Kim were eligible, he would be a second- or third-round pick.

His English is limited, so that will obviously be a challenge for him to improve his communication skills to work with pitchers.

He is expected to graduate high school in February, in time to report to Tucson for spring training. You have to imagine he will probably stay in extended spring training and play for either Missoula or Yakima next year.
