Projecting the Cards' first round pick is difficult because I believe that Keim is fully committed to drafting for value in the first round, and you have to project who's going to come off the board in the first 19 picks before picking for the Cards.

It's possible that the Cards could draft a WR in the first round, just because one of the top guys slides down the board, as happened with Michael Floyd two years ago.

While I liked Floyd being picked two years ago, it made a whole lot more sense back then to get another wide out than now.

While there will be some very talented WR's likely worthy of that 20th pick (Cooks and Lee) who will grade out as good or better than any defender likely left on the board, will they constitute the highest value in the FO's minds this year?

I think the value thing is way slanted on teams' boards based on need; and not necessarily immediate need. Arians has said he wants the 1st pick to be a starter very soon. If they indeed went Lee (imo, Cooks will very likely go first, possibly to NY) how is it justified? Will the life long Cardinal be let go?

It will be Abraham's last year, Dockett is 33 this year, Cromartie is signed for just a year and S, RT and TE are still average at best. But usually if prospects are fairly equally rated, need plays the deciding factor. So really WR can't be an option at least in the 1st. But you already know that. ;)

Agree, they are not gong WR on Round 1. They do weigh need with BPA for their draft board.

The Cards normally use their 1st round pick to replace a guy they lost in free agency so I'm guessing they draft C.J. Mosely. ;)

I don't see why. When we picked Floyd we had Fitz, Andre Roberts, and a seemingly ready-to-break-out Early Doucet. Now we have Fitz around for maybe his last season, Floyd, and Ted Ginn. If anything, we're less deep at the WR position going into this draft than we were when we drafted Floyd.

You can make the argument that this draft is deeper at WR than it is at almost any other position, and you'll be able to get good value later in the draft, but I think that the team's draft board is more weighted to need the further you get into the Top 200 (that's why you only need 150-200 prospects ranked in a draft that is going to have 256 selections, and you regularly have teams saying that they drafted a guy with a 3rd or 4th round grade in the 7th).

I'd add in that defensive backs are generally nearly as good values in the middle to late rounds than they are in the first two. I don't really see a need to invest a first-round pick in a safety when we've drafted safeties in the third round or later in the recent memory and don't see the need to pursue one in free agency and we haven't drafted one early in a very long time.

If Watkins falls to them at 20 (which I seriously doubt happens) then I could see them going WR. I could even see them trading up for Watkins if he sneaks into the mid teens. If one of the LT's they like fall to them, then maybe they go OL (again I don't see that happening but you never know).

My money is on the Defense side with the first pick. If a pass rusher they like is still on the board then they grab him. Otherwise they take their best available DL or DB still on their board. You never know but those positions seem like they will be the best available when the Cardinals pick.

That's ridiculous. The best defender on a team playing in the National Championship. Productive and tested very well.

Dee Ford is most likely available when we pick, but there is a chance he goes earlier.

Michael Sam was SEC Defensive Player of the Year and he won't get drafted until 4th or 5th round or later.

Anyways, thoughts on Will Sutton? Why is his stock so low? Does he fit Cardinals defensive scheme?

Michael Sam also tested very poorly, and scouts believe that 1) he was the beneficiary of great matchups because of Ealy and probable future high pick Golden 2) racked up most his stats playing the patsies on his schedule. His technique needs a lot of work as does his physique to be successful in the NFL. He also doesn't project well to 3-4 OLB since he doesn't meet the physical requirements (which Dee Ford does)

Will Sutton is at his best when he's not taking on blocks; he's undersized (6'0) and plays better sub-300 lbs.

He's a classic Warren Sapp-type UT/ 3 technique type. Similar to Darnell Dockett who has always been miscast in a 5 technique (3-4 End) position.

His stock is low because he didn't have a great senior season, there is the perception that he's kind of out of shape, and he tested poorly at the combine.

I think a 4-3 team is going to take him and he will stick in the NFL, but I doubt he'll be a star. No he doesn't fit with what this team seems to be looking for.

Well Sam isn't some bum he came into the season with 9 sacks.

I love Will Sutton he had a bad senior year because he gained all that weight but last year you can make a case he was the best DT in college football he gets off about as fast as anyone. I would be happy as hell if we took him in round 2 we can move him in and it and put all kinds of different Line ups up front.

This mock draft using Walter Football's big board, is real hit or miss; I hit on impact positions, but didn't walk away with a TE, OT, or DE. I would be happy with this one next season, but I would worry 2-3 years down the road:

R1 OLB ANTHONY BARR, UCLA - The Cardinals are on the clock for less than a minute before the selection is made. Barr makes this defense better instantly, with the added bonus for him personally that he doesn't have to be "the guy" in year one. If this played out with Barr sliding to #20, the Cardinals just walked away with their elite pass rusher for the next 10 years. Absolute theft getting Barr at this point.

R2 CB KYLE FULLER, VIRGINIA TECH - Kyle Fuller will probably sneak into the first round, but if he was here, it would represent BPA. I don't think the Cardinals need a CB that badly, but Fuller is a future starter and takes this secondary to a whole other level. He's a feisty, tough man cover corner who is vastly underrated right now.

R3 S DEONE BUCANNON, WASHINGTON STATE - Bucannon just hits people an makes enough plays in the passing to warrant serious playing time immediately. I think he becomes a good starter sooner rather than later.

R4 ILB SHAYNE SKOV, STANFORD - Skov represents an insurance plan against Minter totally sucking, but also becomes a core special teamer. Depth pick of a pretty good, but limited player.

R5 WR ROB HERRON, WYOMING - One of my favorite players in this draft. Here is your slot receiver.

R6 RB ISAIAH CROWELL, ALABAMA STATE - My gamble of the draft. I got to the last pick and he was really the only player other than DT Danny Shelton that jumped out at me. Crowell was a star at Georgia, but off field indiscretions pushed him down to Alabama State. Has feature back potential but his issues have been considerable.
