FWIW Stanton with 30 attempts and had zero sacks today.
This is the one reason why he provides an improvement over Palmer, he is much more mobile but Palmer is a statue compared to Stanton. All Stanton needs to do is manage the game and not turn over the ball. If BA sticks with heavy run offense instead of the ol Al Davis “just throw deep baby” offense then maybe ARZ can hang in games. Key is OL, if they can continue to improve (cutting down in sacks and penalties then this team shouldn’t be a dumpster fire on offense).

A one-dimensional pass only offense with an immobile QB puts the offensive line in a difficult situation. It does not keep the D honest and make protection very difficult.

That is why our offensive line wants to run the ball. DJ Humphries was talking about wanting to do some run blocking. They want to fire off of the snap some.

Two Stanton concerns:

1. He doesn't throw easy-to-catch short passes.

2. Has up & down accuracy.

I'll be happy if he can straighten those 2 things out.

He showed why he is a career backup (and always will be) yesterday. A few good passes, a bunch of bad passes and a bit of luck = a win against a winless team.

He has 8 more games to go, if he survives them all without injury. I think his spectacular :sarcasm: w/l record will trend much more to the loss side if BA sticks with him. He is just not a good QB.

Thank goodness for AP yesterday.

I have a feeling he won't make it through the next game without injury let alone the next 8.

I think it's going to be caused by his own doing too. There were a few plays yesterday where he tried to be Fran Tarkenton scrambling around only to end up taking a monster shot and having to slowly peel himself up off the turf.

I'll give him credit though, he is tough.

Drew Stanton is the #4 starting pitcher who has a 5+ ERA and wins 18 games. Fools gold all day. I will trust the process more than the result, and his process is garbage.

As you all know, I am very critical of the Cards in general. But I never wish for or say somewhat nasty things about any player in particular unless it is in a fun joking way. Most players give it there all out there. Some just aren't as good as others, especially as good as the starters. A team has to have secondary players. We should still support them. Some of you talk about Stanton as if his name is Satan. When you lose a starter, you can't expect the next guy up to be as good. Stanton is what he is, like a cheap used car you keep around in emergencies when your newer nicer car won't start. You don't have to love it as much, but are thankful you have it. Fault is not Stanton for simply being who and what he is. The fault is that we could have had any number of good young QBs sitting on the bench preparing for the day when they take over as our franchise guy. Our front office lets this team down more than anyone else. They might be better than what we had 30 yrs ago, but way short of being capable of building a true championship team. Just my silly opinion.

What it means is Stanton is not going in there and causing the Cards to lose. Which is what you want out of your backup. People want him to go in there and throw for 350+ and 4 TD's. That's not happening. What we saw today, about 50% completion rate, a couple nice throws, and manage the games is what we're going to get out of him and people should be fine with that.

You continue to maintain this, but what would his record have been without that historically good defense backing him up a few seasons ago. He has done PLENTY in his career as a backup to lose games, and has been BAILED OUT.

Like you say, he's a backup, and you can't expect much out of them. You also have to be realistic when you consider what happens when a backup wins. Without a killer defense (or a lousy opponent like the Whiners), that W-L record would be ugly.

People just look at the bottom line, unless you have a bias that makes you want to dig deeper to rip on him.

Drew Stanton is 7-3 as a starter.

ANY team would take that from their backup, without question.

He played just fine yesterday. Yes, he's not a Brady or Rodgers. Now, let's see what happens against Seattle. If he throws for 43 yards and we still win, I will be happy.

LOL Talk about a bias--ONLY look at his W-L record, or you're a hater!

The Cards D is 7-3 while CARRYING Drew Stanton when he starts games.

Which is fine, because backup QBs by and large stink. It's when they get placed on pedestals without having earned it is when others tend to speak up.

You're playing the hypothetical game. We don't know what would happen. You can speculate but I'll go by what has happened. I speculated OSU would beat Iowa last week. How'd that turn out? Btw, I also speculated PSU would win. I guess I should quit speculating :D.

Ha! :)

It's not really speculating to say that a backup QB without a shining defense will have their team give up more than 6 points when said QB throws two picks in their own territory, and that 14 points wouldn't be enough to win the game.

Stanton has terrible accuracy. He is just above 50% in his career and with us. That's not even backup caliber imo. But he can really sling it downfield and make some plays in games that are kept close by our defense, special teams and run game. Only chance to have a playoff shot is riding AD just like against the 49ers, get some chunk plays off play action at the right moment, do some creative stuff (read option, end around) to keep defenses honest. Don't expose Stanton. You can win games with him, but he will kill you with tons of interceptions if he has to throw it in obvious passing situations. I've nearly lost all the faith I had in Arians, but if he can somehow keep the ship afloat with Stanton and keep us in the playoff race until the very end, he can for sure do it next year with a much more talented rookie QB relying on the DJ/AD combo, especially if we upgrade our OL which isn't too difficult imo.

The toothless Niner defense and the success the Cardinal running game had is what allowed Stanton to make a few plays. If the Cardinals got to play the Niners every week they would go undefeated. There is a reason the Niners are winless and it starts with their QB situation and injuries that go even beyond the Cardinals injuries. Don't expect Peterson to run against the Hawks like he did against the Niners. Add in the fact that the Hawks need this game to keep pace with the Rams and they lost Sunday which will make for some tough sledding Thursday for the Cardinals.
