Edgerrin James-Would a 5 year/30 million/10 million bonus be enough to bring him in?

Russ,

Not to rain on your parade re: stats, but in Marshall Faulk's first seven years as a pro, he rushed for a total of 1910 carries. In comparison, James has carried the ball 2196 times in his seven years as a pro.

The difference as you can see is marginal.

286 carries is hardly marginal. it's like adding an entire season.

If you were Edge, would you rather play in AZ and be "front and center" or on a team where you were a "system" back.

this is a really dumb argument. i can guarantee that every back in the league would rather play for the broncos than the cards. that's not even a question.

The money parameters seem to be about right. This package will be worth about $8 mm on averge but would be backloaded so that would mean the cap figure is less during the first years. Anything more and he'll be pricing himself out of the market.

The package in question is not 8 Mill a year. Contract numbers are given out as such. 5 years/ 30 Mill Total / 10 of which is bonus money.

It isnt 30 Million and a 10 Million bonus on top. That just isnt the way contracts are reported to the media

It is a 6 Mill a year deal if the CBA gets approved soon. If not it is a 6.5 Mill deal the first 4 years and a 4 mill deal the last year, and no cap panaltey if cut the last year since bonuses cannot be pro rated more then 4 years.

Russ,

And they are rumored to be interested in TO as well. My point......rumors are just that.

It is really academic....the Bronco's are $26 MM over the cap. Their worries are how to get under this enormous weight.....not trying to sign a guy like Edge when they don't need him .

if it were me right now I'd take Denver in a heartbeat. you put any RB behind that OL in that system and they get 1000 yards, put a back like Edge there, he may get his career high YPC. I suspect that's why Denver might be looking, I think they realize yes we can make pretty good RB's look really good, but we were much more dangerous when we had a really good RB like portis back there. Get another really good RB and watch him run. The Broncos were way over the cap last year and still managed to sign players, with restructuring and big bonuses anything is possible. I suspect Denver if they really are interested in James, and TO, are thinking this team has to win NOW before we get any older. I suspect they realized this year that they needed more playmakers on offense to make the protect Jake from himself offense work better.

The point I was making regarding Faulk and James is not years in the league, it's number of carries by each at the time of Faulk being traded and James apparently leaving. That's valid because if the premise is look what Faulk did after he was traded, that suggests James will do as well for as long. My point was he's already had about 500 more carries before changing teams, about 2 full years more wear and tear.

Certainly age is a factor but for RB's I tend to put a lot more stock in carries over age, because carries are what wear down RB's IMHO. It's the constant pounding more than getting older that slows them down.

Man, Edge and either Hutch or Bentley in FA? That'd be almost enough for me. Granted, we need to be able to sign a few more players, for depth among other things, but what a splash that would be!

i would have to agree with stout in principal. the cardinals need 2 good gaurds and a big name rb out of free agentcy this off season. james fits the green system better than alexander. alexander plays with a fullback. even pat kirwan of nfl.com says that james would look good in a cardinals uniform. i would have to agree with that statement.

I'm not sure that we need two guards.....Elton Brown at RG is talented.

I would love to get Edge and LaCharles Bentley, a DT and a FS but the question is are the Bidwill's going to be able to or want to fork up over 20 million in bonus money? They will be bring in alot of money this year but they wont get the TV money until around May or June. The bonus comes from there pockets.

I hope the Cardinals prove to us that they are willing to go the extra mile to get these players.

We'd damn-well better be prepared to fork over huge bonuses, or else we'll be losers in FA. We HAVE the money, and we need to SPEND the money, and we need to be CREATIVE in how we do so, or else we'll not be maximizing the cap.

A 5 year 30 million dollar deal is $6M per year. The bonus money no matter how much it is, is usually included in the total. $6M per year with a 15M bonus would probably do it for sure, but I don't know if the Cards would want to spend that amount of bonus money.
I think less would deninately do it. It's going to be buyer's market at RB this off-season.
