Cardinals | Smith Promoted to Starting RB - from www.KFFL.com
Thu, 17 Jun 2004 10:35:04 -0700

Darren Urban, of the East Valley Tribune, reports Arizona Cardinals head coach Dennis Green, in somewhat of a surprising move, has elevated RB Emmitt Smith to the No. 1 back on the team's depth chart. Smith hasn't started a game since the fifth game of the 2003 season, when he gained minus-1 yard on six carries and suffered a fractured scapula.

whoa - even I'm a little stunned by this one- has Shipp been hurt or not looking good in practices?

Not to jump he gun here VF but the past couple of years Shipp has been demoted from the likes of Jones,Pittman and now Smith.

Clearly Green thinks that he needs more speed from the tailback spot...

... and you think Smith is faster at this point in his carrer?

I was actually hoping that they might sign faulk or Canidate to be a 3RB or a quick 1-2 punch with Shipp. Who knows maybe Shipp's pass blocking still isn't good enough to totaly replace Smith.

Either way, it's still early. We'll see.

Dennis Green said earlier this month that Shipp was gonna have 1200 yards and 7tds, that is gonna be impressive getting that from the bench.

I don't care if Anthony Clement is the starting running back as long as start looking like an actual NFL team and win.

We should have drafted Steven Jackson... :)

The thing is how would it have looked when S Jackson would have to be benched in favour of E Smith.

I think DG needs a RB with speed to make his offense work at it's best.
Since the speed RB can take it to the second level which a slower RB can't do. And that is not Shipp's fault. At the end of the day if he can get 4 yards a pop the Cards will still do okay.

At 3? Eh I don't think so. I am wishing that we had been able to pull off the trade for Kevin Jones though. :(

Kevin Jones reminds me a lot of Thomas with better speed. Not a good inside runner and get tackled by an arm tackle. The RB class this year is thin anyway.
