In assessing whether or not Markieff Morris was a good pick, we not only have to look at how he performs but also how other rookies the Suns passed on in order to draft him perform. It's only preseason but it doesn't hurt to start monitoring some of the bigger names drafted after Markieff. Some of the more recognizable players taken after #13 were Markieff's brother Marcus, Kawhi Leonard, Iman Shumpert, Kenneth Faried and Marshon Brooks.

In his first preseason game, Markieff Morris had 10 points, 8 rebounds, 2 steals, a block and 6 fouls in 27 minutes. His brother had 1 point, 4 rebounds and 5 fouls in 22 minutes for Houston, but did much better in his second game posting 20 points, 3 rebounds, 3 assists, also committing 5 fouls in 22 minutes.

The Suns picked Markieff over Marcus because he was slightly bigger and was supposed to have been the better defender and rebounder. He did collect more rebounds in the one game he played than his brother in two, however Kenneth Faried had 14 points and 6 rebounds, 5 offensive, in 15 minutes against Markieff.

It's hard to get a good feel on how a player plays over an internet stream. I want to see Morris play on TV or in person.

What caught me off guard is that Tim Kempton speaking to Al McCoy on 620 AM radio compared Morris to a smaller version of Channing Frye. It sure looked like it to some degree although his rebounding stats were not bad. My fear, if the Suns were going to draft an undersized PF, they would have been better off with Faried. Shumpert would have been an interesting selection as well.

IMO, the Suns have made the mistake in recent drafts of drafting for need instead of BPA.

Since when is 6'10" undersized for the PF position?

Did you watch him? He definitely looked undersized for a PF and not that athletic. Don't get me wrong, I want him to succeed.

Creating this thread as a way of tracking Morris and the rest is fine but handing out grades at this point is idiotic.

Agreed. No way to evaluate at this point. However, I agree he is not undersized. Sorry, not being athletic or having short arms doesn't make one undersized but it might mean you don't see him above the rim very often.

Having said that 8 rebounds in 22 minutes is not bad at all. In fact, he would have had more if not for getting into foul trouble no?

If we can get this guy to be a 10 to 12 rebound per game guy, the Suns might just have themselves a PF. This teams needs the rebounding on the front court. If Gortat gets around 10 and Morris can grab around 10 per game...what team in the NBA wouldn't want 20 rebounds per game in the front court?

Morris is looking like a solid pick. I dont understand all the hate he's getting.

He did a good job on the rebounds in limited minutes and rebounding is something we need.

I know its only been 1 game but I already prefer him starting as PF over Frye.

Its just general discontent. Lopez could put up 12 and 10 and it wouldnt be enough

He just looks smaller on a streaming internet feed... at least let's hope that is the case. :)

I wasnt posting on this forum back then but my thought during the draft was if they were moving Nash then one of the Morris' or Tristian Thompson (not knowing he was going to go 10 picks earlier than his projection) was the right pick. A young guy with developmental potential. But with the team keeping Nash I would have preferred to take Faried, a guy who could help in a big way the minute he steps on the court through defense and rebounding. And while he might be a really porous offensive player I am sure Nash could set him up for some fun dunks.

I think the only reason Nash is on this team is bc he wants to be. They are giving him whatever he wants in the hope that that will be attractive to other free agents.

I wish Nash would grow some balls and demand a trade. Like seriously, is he not interested in winning a championship at all?

And back on topic, Keef played a VERY solid game today and with Frye continuing to show us what a worthless piece of crap he is, I dont see any reason for Morris to not start over Frye at PF.

Morris looked pretty good out there. The fouls weren't great but he showed a dedication to stop offensive players at least. And I liked his shooting and overall awareness.

Nash would like to win a championship, but he is content with the way his career has gone..

He talks a lto about life after basketball and has been quoted many times with sayign things like there is more to life beyond a championship, and if he didn't win a championship he wouldn't feel like a failure or like there was a "piece missing"

Nash is about quality of life, life meaning way beyond basketball.. It is the reason he is not demanding a trade and is ok just coasting the rest of his career..

Crazy, but it is the truth..

You know, it really seems like you understand what Nash is saying all the way up to this point. He doesn't think he's "just coasting". He doesn't define his life by wins and losses. He throws himself into his career and does everything he can to win, or at least everything that falls to him. And I simply do not understand how anyone that watches Nash play even a single game can suggest that he's just coasting.

It would be for me. However, Lopez can't put up those kind of numbers consistently. Look at how many times he has been in double digit rebounds since he has been here.

Beyond pathetic for his size.

The rookie did well in this shortened offseason! This is a VERY small sample set....only 2 pre-season games. The table below shows each of the Top 15 draft picks in 2011, and how they ranked by EFF for the 2 pre-season games.

Keiff and Jimmer tied at Eff = +17.00 (taken from NBA.com/Players). Notice brother Marcus Morris was 4th place behind Kyrie Irving the #1 pick in the draft.

These numbers do not predict how these rookies will play in the regular season. But it is fun to see the Suns rookie do well this pre-season.

NBA.com evaluates all players based on the efficiency formula:
((Points + Rebounds + Assists + Steals + Blocks) - ((Field Goals Att. - Field Goals Made) + (Free Throws Att. - Free Throws Made) + Turnovers)).
