I'd like to keep Triano on as well but at 59, I wouldn't rule him out as a head coach candidate.
Damnit another old guy. I understand we need a good coach, first and foremost. But man is like to see a young guy come in and succeed and lead our club for over a decade.

I think that's the Cardinals who have the old coaches. LOL ;)

A young team and an old coach might work.

Okay, so now Triano has impressed me for 2 games. Tom Chambers just pointed out that he's coaching up the young guys when they're on the bench.

As for the general feel for his team:

A) They get after it on D. Defense still wins championships. Looks like that was the first thing he addressed.

B) Offensively I can't tell you how excited I am to see guys playing their natural position. Ulis and Mike at PG. Booker and Troy at SG. Josh and TJ at SF. Bender and Chriss at PF (Stretch). Alex and Tyson at C. There's no mystery here. Josh just subtly pointed out that guys are in the right positions to be successful. Please trash the stupid "positionless" philisophy.
Anyone else notice that Booker was hands down the go to guy at the end? AN HE WAVED OFF Mike James on the last few possessions as if to say, "I'll take it from here". Then proceeded to nail some clutch shots. It's Booker's team. 2-0. I love it.

Since Triano really isnt up to being a HC full time again past this season

Why not? There's no way to tell at this point whether he'd earn it, but where do you get the idea that he's "not up to it"?

I think Majerle and Triano would be great authoritarian type teachers to get the best out of the team.

Are we talking about the same Dan Majerle? The privileged wino playboy who spent most of his offensive career outside the three point line because it was less work than the slashing that got him into the league? I'm just checking.

Somehow I thought Triano was 69 not 59... sheesh, he's got many years left if he wants to keep up the workload the position entails. It would be nice if we could have a graceful transition to a younger coach who's spent a few years learning from him but I'd hate to see a transition like the one from Cotton to Westfall. Westy was by no means ready when Cotton abruptly decided to step down. I always thought Westfall could have been a good coach if he'd had to make his own way for a few years before he got a gift wrapped HC job.

Yes, thank you! Small ball teaches all sorts of bad habits. It can work for an excellent team in small doses, but the Suns are not an excellent team, and the doses haven't been small. No young roster has ever developed as a unit by playing small ball.

Because he said so during an interview before he got the job. I dont spout misinformation I hear or read.

Majerle was a party boy for sure, but also a gym rat who learned under the best, Cotton and Riley. He's created a winning atmosphere at GCU and holds his kids accountable. I think that would transfer to the pro level along with quality support in assistant coaches like Triano.

Fair enough, but the guy's only 59 years old. If he looked like the best choice, my guess is that an eight-figure contract would change his mind. It's a little like politicians always insisting that they aren't considering running for President, even when everyone knows they will be.

"Not up to it" is somewhat confusing. I read it the same way that Eric did initially, but I remembered that he did say he may not have interest in a head-coaching gig during that one press conference. Had I not just listened to it, I would have taken "Not up to it" as "Not good enough" too.

Well said. I also feel that maintaining natural positions simplifies the game for the young players. They don't feel like they are all over the court with multiple responsibilities. They can isolate on key aspects of a position and hone their skills. The game gets a lot slower in their mind if they aren't having to think too much. This will be huge for Chriss, Bender, Warren, and Jackson.

Look, I'm not delusional here. The Suns probably won't win a lot this year. They are riding a little bit of a high and the results have been enjoyable. They'll probably hit more than a couple of walls. But I can be proud of this team when they play like they have for the past 2 games. And this is how you start building the correct way.

I like small ball as a change of pace but if your guys are good enough defenders and have the speed you can play lots of small ball - the Warriors showed that thanks to Iggy, Green and Klay. I'm not seeing that kind of incipient defensive talent on this roster so I'm not advocating that route. I'm just being a devil's advocate here.

While wins and losses are always a measuring stick, what you want from a young team is development. Learn good habits, make the right decisions, do what it takes to get better. I don't think we would have seen an iota of development with Watson in charge, I'm much more hopeful that we'll see it now.

Why not have an older guy lead our club for over a decade, ageist!

Since when is 59 old? And Triano seems to be in fantastic shape. He could easily have a ten year run. How many NBA coaches last that long anyway?

How old are you? You have no idea of what a 59-year-old is capable of.
I’m 48.

I know a 59 year old in 11 years will be 70. My parents are in their 70s and I consider them young at heart and active and I know my father could not stand the rigors of being an NBA coach at 70+. I want to find a coach who is here for the long haul.

Tell that to Greg Popovich, age 68. See what he says.

That is what I was thinking. How many coaches last 10 years? 7 years? Use that experience. The young guys seem to want an experienced teacher.

Uh, the really great ones. You guys really don’t want greatness do you? You all set such low bars.

I said I’d like an older guy (I believe I’m the one that first floated Doug Collins) for a few years to teach the young guys and then transition over to a young stud coach.

I'd take a Suns coach who could last seven years.
