I've said alot before some of these are during the 08 preseason battle that gave Kurt the Nod over Matt, but basically Matt can roll either way and pass accurate on the run, with deep touch. that is rare, He does not grade out higher in elite skillsets than say, Brady P Manning or Brees but He has no glaring weakness either at any QB skill set. At 6'5- 232lBS prototypical NFL QB size that is rare. now unproven in a hoax,

how can you get any more proven than Monday Night Meltdown as your first Rookie Start? I started a rally and a few fans met at the Cards facility to cheer their effort after the most devastating loss in NFL History, Matt pulled upto the crowd in his dodge looked right through us hesitating for 30 seconds, backed up and disappeared now He looked past us but We seen into his soul, Just because He doesn't act out like Dockett, doesn't mean Matt has no fire!

thats after Kurt went 1-4 to start the 06 season! He went from 4 NCAA championship games and record bursting, owning the LA football Market to MNM! stick that in your pipe and smoke it! unproven, nah He's tempered by 17 starts, 16 preseason games and battling all world HOF QB Kurt Warner for a job!

would Alex Smith have competed with Kurt if Kurt chose to dsign with the Niners last year, any NFCW QB? cutler, VY, RYAN, Flacco just who would have taken that job from Kurt in your eyes? 405 yard NFL rookie record against a good vikings defense, Pittsburg, No Matt leinert hasn't been handed nuthing, and i expect 28 TD's 15 INT's and 4000+ yards this year, his worse year for the next decade.

so if Anybody thinks having Back up Matt and Back up Beanie joining Fitz as the Cards elite offensive skill player core is a problem , i propose it is a grand blessing. I mean The Bean turns 22 on Saturday and Fitz and Matt are both 26, Their best years are not for at leaast 2 more years, but the Cards gifted enough to win all right now, leading the NFL from the Rams game on with th eaisest NFL schedule!

Niners beware were coming to get you, and make all the bias talking heads shu up as Hollywood Matt grips the LA market and East coast bias by the throat and Chokes it!

Shock the world, Nah, I predict it!

I’ve checked the stats and scream my support of Matt Leinert as the most prepared NFL Quarter Back in history. I have him graded as an elite QB even with Kurt Warner at 90 after Kurt’s decline from a 93 this year. Matt has a better chance at the Pro [...]

4 preseason games

Although we a walk through the valley of the shadow of death we fear no evil caused we've battled every evil in the valley. Every moment is most important and every penny spent is a penny yearned. We take nothing for granted and are eternally grateful for the smallest of [...]

Matt Leinart looked very good tonight. I’ve been saying all along that smart decisions and playing safe will win the job. Matt managed the game well and made some above average throws. I don’t feel like he’s going to make the big mistakes as often as Kurt does. He held onto the ball a long time a couple of times and the starting Oline did well but are still not close to potential. Matt and Kurt would start on over half the teams in the NFL. Matt’s fantastic football brain (and average NFL QB skills) is what made him a top 10 pick. If Matt started this first preseason game for most other team he would be their starter. We are blessed. Matt is a starter and if he put up 7/8 for 91 yards a quarter with no turnovers, no game management mistakes or bonehead penalties, ON HIS PART! He will be a pro bowler in the NFC in 08.
Matt does not get the credit he deserves as a 16 game NFL starter. The first game he started in the tragic MNF loss to DA Bears elite defense was a hell of a way to start a career! The 299 yard effort when the WHOLE CARDINAL TEAM was in a new offense(again) to beat the very good Seahawks at the beginning of 07 was not 2nd string. Matt can only learn and grow on the field from this point forward. Coach Whiz recently said that the reason we kept 2 Quarterbacks last year was that we didn’t have a 3rd QB worth keeping on the roster last year.

I'm almost more worried about his ability to stand up physically to the beating that this offensive line may force him to endure. His first two NFL seasons ended on injured reserve, after all.
This too! Hopefully he is stronger, tougher and has learned how to take a tackle without getting hurt!

I think Matt "allows" us to run a more balanced offense that Whiz wants to run. Warner was so good at what he did we were able to "get away with" throwing the ball all the time and in fact excelled at it. But even when we wanted to run the ball, we often had the issue of Kurt audibling to a pass or as you said taking so long on the handoffs on draws that the play was dead before the RB got the ball.

There is an interesting thing with Leinart that goes back to an article in SI
http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/20.../07/08/qb.rule/index.html?xid=cnnbin&hpt=Sbin

Basically the author talks about the "rule of 26-27-60" in predicting success for a college QB. 26 is the minimum score for a QB on the Wonderlic(Matt got 35), 27 is the minimum number of starts in college(Matt exceeded this) and 60 is completion percentage in college(Matt topped 60 all 3 seasons he played at USC). Obviously it hasn't yet translated into success for Matt but as always we have no idea how well he would have played if Kurt hadn't simply been so good. Matt had some success early, then the whole implosion after the Bears game screwed up the OC and the QB coach, and then Kurt just basically played like a HOF QB with 83 TD passes in his last 3 seasons which kept Matt on the bench.

If Matt can stay healthy I think he can still be a very good NFL QB.

Thank you Russ...!!! Finally someone on this forum has it right about Matt.

I really like the idea of changing the offense to a more 50/50 run/pass split. I believe that an offense that utilizes the run, counters (bootlegs and misdirections), and play-action passes is the toughest to defend. I definitely think Leinart is better equipped to run this type of offense than Warner.

It seemed like we didnt connect on a lot of deep passes last year. I bet that changes with Matty and the play-action pass.

Agree on the bootlegs, but Warner was one of the best when it came to play action passes. There were a few deep balls last year, but this offense relies a lot on YAC. Not sure why the play action wasn't called more when Warner was so good at it.
It's difficult to know what Leinart will bring to the table except he should be a bit more mobile than Warner and maybe he will hang on to the ball a bit more. I'm most concerned about his decision making, but we'll see how that goes.

No he wasn't. Warner never fooled anyone with the play-action pass. In fact, the Cards only used play-action 12% of the time last season, 29th in the NFL. And the Cards weren't among the Top 10 teams in the NFL who improved last season when they used play action.

Perhaps, you say, it was just because Warner was playing with one shoulder last season. Well, the Cards' offense was 32nd in the NFL in use of play-action in 2008--a staggering 7% of the time.

Warner did a lot of things very, very well, but he HATED play action because it forced him to turn his back on the play and it didn't allow him to make the reads that he wanted.

Hated play action is an understatemnt, he despised it!!! Warner's play fakes resembled a Pop Warner QB's.

I'm not saying he liked doing it or it fooled anyone, but his QB rating was extremely high when he used it. I'm a bit surprised it wasn't used more when it worked so well (not that it would fool the defense).

Coaches generally don't call or make QB's run plays they don't like or feel the guy doesn't seem comfortable doing. Haven't you ever heard of coaches quizzing their QB before a game & asking them what plays they like most that are in the gameplan?

Source? How can you say that for sure based on such a tiny sample size?

I saw the stat broadcast a few different times in games at the end of last season(though I have no idea where to look that stat up). Both his QB rating and comp % were much higher out of play action, but like you said it was a small sample size.

Maybe Lutui Wasnt there. Unless he took all the back ups too which Lutui currently is. Would be interesting to hear if he took all the back ups as well. Although Lutui is his college buddy so I'm sure he went.

He took Bridges instead of Wells..........

Talk is cheap (whether it be by Matt, the media or us "experts").

Plus - Wiz's MO is to "live off the land" (i.e. capitalize on good things he sees and avoid things that aren't working). Plus - we don't know how "today's Matt" may differ from the Matt of 1 - 2 years ago. Until we see what works and won't work - within the context of the offensive talent we've got - we're only guessing..

While "on paper", you'd figure that Matt would be more mobile and more effective in play action and that he'd be better at ball security when flushed out of the pocket - we really don't know what we'll be getting until we see what Matt can do when "live"bullets are whizzing.

Despite all the talk, none of us really know. We may be pleasantly surprised...or vice versa. Can't wait til next week.

I can verify this. It was shown during more then just one game. Mentioned a few times on radio as well.

It was probably called more times then we realized. I think the story goes that Kurt was usually given 2 plays and he would pick what he felt was best at the line, 9 times out of 10 he would pick the pass Wiz would joke about. Probably same is true for play action as well.

Well, what I can say is that Warner ran no more than 65 plays off play action all year last year--out of 537 total. That's a pretty small sample size to work with.

He took Bridges instead of Wells..........

"Quarterback Matt Leinart made a point of trying to bond with his offensive linemen this offseason. He even paid for several of them to go to Hawaii with him in late June and early July. Center Lyle Sendlein, guard/tackle Jeremy Bridges and tackles Brandon Keith and Levi Brown accepted the offer. Guard Alan Faneca was there with his family and spent some time with the group, too."

I believe when they were mentioning it it was career, but as has been stated before it's difficult to call something your QB doesn't like doing (especially for a veteran like Warner).

hence the use of the word "expected" rather than "guaranteed" in the heading of this thread . . .
