I've been revisiting The Rockford Files on Netflix. Forgot just how good most of the episodes were.

We recently finished season 3. Welcome Andrew!

More deep stuff, like the suicide hotline episode and Steven dealing with his mom & brother after his father's death.

Geena Davis was in a few episodes as a housekeeper.

Now this is when the show jumped the shark. Little Andrew is born and ages 5 years in 1 season which effectively kills the show. Andrew, however, becomes an even more annoying character on Star Trek: The Next Generation. Just to add, adding a new character, usually a child, is the death knell of every series. Cousin Oliver anyone?

Oh, and as ugly as Tina Yothers was on this show, she grew up and filled out nicely:

Romance was in the air in Family Ties' fourth season (1985-86), when it was in the coveted 8:30 p.m. slot following The Cosby Show in NBC's Must-See TV Thursday lineup. When Alex (Michael J. Fox) is starting his sophomore year at Leland College, his plan to pick a prospective girlfriend from the freshman directory goes awry when he battles with her art-major roommate, Ellen (Tracy Pollan). Not surprisingly, opposites attract, and Alex and Ellen's dance together and the heart-tugging aftermath became one of the series' emotional high points and made a No. 1 single out of Billy Vera and the Beaters' "At This Moment." (It turns out that Fox and Pollan's incredible chemistry wasn't just acting: they married less than three years later.) Many of the season's best episodes feature Alex and Ellen, including those involving her father (played by Ronny Cox), but another major character was added in Nick (Scott Valentine), the Kawasaki-riding, garbage-art-making, earring-wearing boyfriend of Mallory (Justine Bateman). Nick, whose favorite greeting is "Ayyy!", immediately sets off warning bells for Mallory's father Steven (Michael Gross), though the Rambo comparisons seem silly today.
Also in the season, Mallory tops Alex in an IQ test, Stephen finds a new and demanding job, Elyse (Meredith Baxter-Birney) and Alex take an automotive class, Jennifer (Tina Yothers) winds up in a difficult spot when Alex helps her with a speech, and Skippy (Marc Price) finally decides to pursue Mallory. Guest stars include River Phoenix as Alex's 13-year-old math tutor, Martha Plimpton as a young shoplifter, and Peter Scolari as Elyse's romantically inclined coworker. The four-DVD set has the 90-minute Family Ties Vacation movie that aired before the season started, episode promos, the original theme song, and the original Billy Vera song. --David Horiuchi

Season four is in the books! Welcome Nick and Ellen!

How could you not like Nick? Ayyy! Alex trying to help Nick act more like him was hilarious.

Stephen at the Sunflower Girls meeting was genius.

I had no idea there was a Family Ties Vacation movie. I'll have to track that down, even though it's probably ridiculous.

After you get done with this series, watch Tremors. Burt Gummer is the polar opposite of Steven Keaton.

Season 5 down!

Andy sure grew up fast. :D

A little too much Jennifer late in this season IMO.

Alex out in the workforce was funny though.

Stephen gets funnier and funnier.

Season six in the books.

Hello Courtney Cox. I never knew she was on the show.

Stephen is still getting funnier every season. Loved his attempt at the magic tricks.

More really good deep episodes like Andy befriending the deaf kid and even Nick added some depth by reconciling with his father.

We have a local TV channel that's been showing the great shows from my youth from the 70's and 80's. I'm stoked to see Emergency, Adam-12, and the cop series' like Streets of San Francisco, Rockford Files, Quincy, etc. It's called MeTV is you have one near you. http://metvnetwork.com/ Right now it has Black Sheep Squadron on.

I forgot to post the Season 7 update. It took us exactly 6 years to watch every episode, just in time for my oldest son to head off to NAU.

Great ride. I respect this show for not shying away from the serious issues that most families eventually deal with. They covered just about everything.

The contrast between Alex and his hippie parents never got old. And Steven was arguably the greatest dad character ever on tv. I had a totally different perspective of the show compared to when I watched it as a kid.
