Peter Gabriel was really good in Genesis. That band was great in the 70s before they went pop.

In other words, when Peter left the band.

Personally, I think Peter Gabriel is brilliant.
I was fortunate to see "The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway"
tour and to this day it was still one of the best shows I have ever seen and it was because of Peter Gabriel.
Genesis was not the same without him.
Watch Peter Gabriel's Growing Up DVD. Brilliant.

That must have been a happening to see his theatrics live......

Yeah....it was tragedy when he left Genesis because it esentially became Phil Collins and his back-up band...... Rutherford and Banks were obviously a lot better than that......

Listen to Solisbury Hill, but listen to it as Peter talking to the band. Telling them they don't need a replacement.

Wow... thanks....that definitely put that song into an entirely different perspective....

Ome album that everyone should check-out (if you havent) is "Passion" his filmscore for Last Temptation of Christ..... The tapestry of sound is amazing....

Yup. 70s prog rock rules. Yes, Genesis, Rush, ELP, etc. I'd even kinda throw Deep Purple into that category, although they were a bit heavier.

Even though he's a total wack job, can't deny R. Kelly has talent in music.

Paul Westerberg of The Replacements has to be on the list. He played at the Marquee on Friday night. Great show. When he is on, he is great. When he gets sloppy, he is still very entertaining.

I'd also throw out as candidates:

Paul Weller of The Jam
Robyn Hitchcock
Elvis Costello
Neil Finn
Willie Nelson

I'm a big fan of Paul Westerberg. What was on his setlist?

This is the setlist from an LA show i grabbed from a website...but it is essentially what he did in Tempe. I took out some of the stuff he did not do in Phoenix and the only song I can remember he did that is not on this list is Little Mascara.

It was a good mix of old and new and his voice was in better shape than most of the Mats shows I saw. He was sober and rested, but still pretty sloppy (getting bored mid song, forgetting lyrics, etc.)

He had a pretty good band assembled (drummer from Prince, Jim Bohquist of Sun Volt on bass and Kevin Bowe played Bob Stinson).

1. Merry Go Round
2. Someone Take the Wheel
3. Live Forever
4. Makin' Me Go
5. Let The Bad Times Roll
6. As Far As I Know
7. Kiss Me on the Bus
8. Final Hurrah
9. AAA
10. Mr. Rabbit
11. Knockin' On Mine
12. I'll Be You
13. Psychopharmacology
14. Valentine
15. Born For Me
16. High Time
17. Lookin' Up In Heaven
18. Skyway (Kevin stood next to the drums, shaking some maracas, Paul turned and said "I knew there was a white man shakin' that thing")
19. What A Day (For A Night)
20. Achin' To Be
22. Love Untold
25. Dylan Song - Only A Hobo
26. Can't Hardly Wait
28. Now I Wonder
Encores
29. Crackle & Drag (Paul solo)
30. Alex Chilton (band)
31. Left Of The Dial (band)

Good calls and thanks for the setlist and review of Westerberg's concert....

I've always enjoyed Neil Finn's music... whether if he was in Split Enz and Crowded House..... Do you ever listen to his collaborations with his brother Tim? It's awesome....especially their performances on kcrw.org "Morning Becomes Eclectic".....just classic......

Also, Elvis Costello's perfomances on that same program was phenomonal....

I would have to add 5 of the following:

1) Tjinder Singh (Cornershop)
2) Jeff Tweedy (Wilco)
3) Damon Albarn/Graham Coxon (Blur)
4) Annie Lennox & Dave Stewart
5) Roland Orzabal (Tears for Fears)

It's interesting when a thread like this bumped-up from 2-yrs ago and since you've discovered newer bands ...or began listening to some writers that you intially didnt pay attention to, but now realize they must be included w/in this thread.... I would like to add the following:

1) Damon Albarn
2) Graham Coxon
3) Dave Mason
4) Jim Capaldi
5) Isaac Brock (Modest Mouse)

Those are the only ones I can think of at the moment, but I know that there are several others that will be added onto here in due time.....
