Any chance we can bring back Bob Brenley? ;)
But actually, Bob Brenly is the Manager who taught his Bench Coach, Bob Melvin, about helter-skelter batting orders -- 130 or so in a season.

Melvin announced in Spring Training that he would bat Young and Drew 2nd and 3rd regularly (the order depending upon whether a righty or lefty was starting for the opposition).

That lasted two games. By game 3, Young was dropped closer to the bottom of the batting order.

Young did get three hits including a homerun. The Mad Scientist (as Sutton calls him) lucked out.

Y'know, if you sit an infinite amount of monkeys at an infinite amount of word processors for an infinite amount of time, eventually one of them would type the Declaration of Independence.

I won't even get into how he's ruining the careers of Justin Upton and Mark Reynolds.

It's why Melvin was a .500 manager at Seattle and has been a .500 manager here.

That's what he is. That's what it will be.

He is what we thought he was: a second choice, bargain basement manager. You know the old saying: "you get what you pay for." He needs to go sooner rather then later. Can't imagine anyone else doing a worse job, that's for sure.

Who is another manager out there? Promote Chip Hale? Get a retred like Bobby Valentine or Davy Johnson?

I would say that they would likely go with Chip Hale or Kirk Gibson which may not exactly be a plus in this circumstance. This team needs a manager like Wally Backman who is fiery which neither BoMel or Brenley are/were

That's fine! I get to see and hear Brenley more now than I ever would anywhere else. ;)

This team would thrive under Mike Scossia

Bingo. My vote is for Chip Hale, but I would be happy with Kirk Gibson, too. And they're both right here and in uniform.

As far as fiery, both Hale and Gibson have it in them. And Chip Hale has already proven he can be a Championship Manager within the organization.

He did it at Tucson, despite the D'backs depleting his roster of BabyBacks.

What a great manager Melvin is. It's the 10th inning and the Diamondbacks have no hitters left on the bench and Upton is on first and is hurt. Now Pena has to bat. :bang:

When I was at a recent Spring Training game sitting, in the first row close to where Chip Hale was coaching 3B, I shouted out, "The D'backs have a great Manager. Too bad he's coaching third base."

It got a rise out of the nearby fans. Hale didn't bat an eyelash. He's a diplomat.

Melvins lineups confuse the hell out of me, today he runs out at the top of the linup:

S Lopez
R Jackson
L Drew
L Tracy
R Reynolds

So you've got your best hitter batting 2nd, instead of 3rd where he'd traditionally be. You've got a speedier guy hitting 3rd, your best home run threat 5th (with another young player CY, whos inconsistent 'protecting' him) and youve put your 2 lefties back to back.

Wouldn't:

S Lopez
L Drew
R Jackson
R Reynolds
L Tracy

make a hell of a lot more sense?

You best hitter should hit second ideally. Your fourth spot hitter should be a low OBP high SLG guy. Your fifth spot hitter should be another high OBP guy.

The reasons for this are that at the second spot vs the first your best hitter gains about 30 more plate appearances. The average number of players who come to bat in an inning is four. So your "cleanup hitter" is most likely to be at the plate with a man on and 2 outs. You need a slugger there, but the OBP need isn't as great as it is for the fifth spot hitter who is likely to be the first guy up to start the second inning.

I believe that Bob Melvin simply does not understand that there is an effective role for each place in the batting order.

Add to that, his stated commitment to bat Young and Drew 2nd and 3rd (or vice versa vs. lefty starters) has, once again, been disregarded, with Young haphazardly dropped lower yesterday.

Lack of understanding and lack of commitment to his word. That is not the formula for success . . . obviously. Three home series lost in a row.

The problem is the front office is not competent. They all need to be fired.

Still waiting. After back to back very questionable strike three calls against Upton and Young, we have zero argument from Melvin. He stands there like a statue rubbing his chin. FIRE HIM NOW!!!
