Fitzgerald says his role limits his production

Cardinals receiver Larry Fitzgerald recently said he can still play at a high level. So is it possible for him to generate significant numbers?

“No, it’s not possible,” Fitzgerald told Burns & Gambo of Arizona Sports 98.7 FM in Phoenix. “And it’s only that reason, because of the role that I play. It’s a different role. I just don’t have the opportunities down the field. I’m more inside, I move the chains a lot more. So in terms of putting up the big numbers, it will be difficult. But in terms of my effectiveness, of providing first downs, being able to make tough catches for my team, I’m still going to be able to do that.”

reality check.

His physical ability limits his role.... his role limits his production....

ergo,...his physical ability limits his production.

Big Fitz fan...but he never was really fast....and now he is slower than that. He still has fantastic hands however, and as long as he stays on top of his route trees he should have several more very productive seasons.

80 first downs can be worth more to the team than 1000 yards.

Been saying this for 2 years now & was laughed at by many. I still believe #11 is a helluva player being totally misused by BA.

Remember how KW & other QBs would just throw it up & Fitz would come down with it? Those days are gone. Not even a fade down in the red zone which is almost unstoppable.

I guess you forgot about that Philly game last year where he outran everyone.

Still misused imo. He's still almost unstoppable on jump balls, but playing him in the slot the majority of the time doesn't allow him to be used deep anymore.

Still laughing at you… There is no question Fitz Skills have declined. Good player still? Yes.. But highly overrated on this board.. Which is normal people tend to wanna believe longer then they should. Just look at 82's predictions for Fitz production the last few years :)

Fitz was never fast though. Has he slowed so much that he's gone from elite to pedestrian?

If his game was never about speed, it's logical to assume that a musical chairs at QB and different offense has affected him more than his speed.

Not pedestrian. I still think he will get close to 1k this year if palmer stays healthy. Before palmers injury Fitz was averaging 90 yards a game.

What most people aren't talking about is the tragic derailment of what could have been the greatest career of all time for a receiver.

If only the prime of Larry's career wasn't wasted behind porous O Lines in front of quarterbacks like Anderson, Kolb, Skelton, Lindley, Stanton, and other third - fifth tier guys since the Cards just couldn't get a young QB to stick.

Imagine if he got Warner for a career, like some lucky offenses do.

Fitzgerald is running into the same issues that Jerry Rice did near the end of his career. He is a player who is very good, but is limited physically in the ways that he can consistently win. Rice benefited from decent QBs while Fitz has had mostly garbage, but the decline in vertical speed and burst hurt Rice and is now hurting Fitz.

Nothing new here.

Not once did I see Fitzgerald get a deep ball thrown to him. Fitz was never a speed receiver. So he is misused, to a certain extent.

Totally agree, Fitz has good numbers when he has a good qb. So do most wrs.

Actually he had 1400 receiving yards in 2011 with Kolb and Skelton. His yardage went up in 2010 with DA after Kurt warner retired. His combined yardage in 2010 and 2011 was more than that in 2008-2009 with Warner.

What's new to me is the utter lack of personal responsibility in his production. Sorry, big guy, but you weren't running a ton of deep routes with Kevin Kolb and John Skelton in 2011. You still managed to get 1400 yards and 8 TDs.

Your job is to make as much out of every opportunity that you can. **** and play football.

Agreed. This seems like a preemptive marketing move when his stats, once again, do not match his pay.

He is relentless in his desire to protect his legacy which is wearing me out, and is confirming my belief that he is more of a "me" guy than he has been portrayed by the media.

All things considered, I'm ok with him handling his business the way he feels is best, but I am sick of hearing about it.

Bah. A reporter asked him a question and he answered it. It's not like he held a press conference or released a statement.

That's nonsense. He went on Burns and Gambo and decided to make that statement. He could've just as easily said "My job is to maximize the potential of every route I run to gain yards and score touchdowns for the Arizona Cardinals. My goal is to gain 1300 yards and score 12 TDs this year."

but i think he doesnt really mean his role,he cant say the mediocre plays by qb's limited is performance
prior to palmer injury he was on the verge to reach 1000 yards easily, even with stanton that doesnt have a very accurate arm in medium route he struggle from a statistical standpoint

if a running back playing for a bad offensive line, doesnt have to much chance to show his skills

nobody of our receiver could do something outside of the combo stanton john brown, just cause stanton can throw deep ball, fitz doesnt have and vnever had the speed to be a vertical threat

How is it the Fitzgerald is never fast enough yet last year I saw him take a slant to the house ?

If this was such a big deal to Fitzgerald why would he stay with the Cardinals when he has the opportunity to play anywhere he wants.

This is a mountain out of a mole hill. Guy has never said anything that would make a person believe he is a "me" player, and does everything asked of him by the coaching staffs he has had over his career.

Yet, haters are going to hate.

That's nice and everything, but 1000 yards would've just barely cracked 23rd in the receiver rankings. How much money did Fitz make again last year?

DeAndre Hopkins got over 1200 yards catching balls from bozos the entire year. Ryan Fitzpatrick et al. Jeremy Maclin had over 1300 yards catching passes from Mark Sanchez and some guy from a third-rate BCS program.

Through 9 games last year, Fitz was on pace for an 1100 yard season with 2 TDs. He scored 0 TDs over the last 7 weeks of the season.

Because the Cards paid him 50% more than he would've gotten anywhere on the open market, without the stain of having been released?
